Former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn will make his return to fighting action tonight (Sunday, January 15, 2017) in the main event of UFC Phoenix, when he takes on No. 10-ranked featherweight Yair Rodriguez.

Leading up to their contest Penn has been unleashing a slew of trash-talk towards his young Mexican foe, claiming that when the two take center Octagon he’ll make ‘El Pantera’ look like an amateur in there with him. During a recent interview with MMA Fighting Rodriguez got his opportunity to respond to ‘The Prodigy’, stating that his actions as of late have reflected rather immaturely on the UFC Hall Of Famer:

“He’s an expert, like he said. He’s pretty good at what he does and I respect him so much. The way that he talks isn’t going to change the way that I think about him,” Rodriguez said. “He said he’s a professional and he’s been in dozens of fights. He’s acting like an amateur.

“For me, I’m not mad at him. I actually respect him so much. I don’t know why he’s mad. I mean, man, I f*cking appreciate you. I respect you so much, I don’t know why you’re mad with me. I haven’t done nothing to you, but I respect you. But if you’re mad, man, what can I do? We’re going to fight anyways, so you’re going to punch me in the face. It’s what we do.”

Penn has also insinuated that Rodriguez and his manager conspired to fight Penn since their days training together at Jackson-Wink, claiming Rodriguez believes he can make his name off of the now 38-year-old Hawaiian:

“I never asked for this fight,” Rodriguez said. “I don’t know who told him that, but it was some fight that the UFC offered me and I accepted, just like he did. I don’t know who created that lie, but I didn’t ask for this fight. But now I’m here fighting him, I’m fighting a legend and I’m pretty happy.”

UFC

Despite the ongoing war of words between the two sides, Rodriguez still holds a great deal of respect for his legendary adversary, having watched Penn compete while growing up in the streets of Mexico and researching some highlights from the former K1 champ’s heyday:

“I watched him growing up,” Rodriguez said. “I watched some of his highlight videos, I liked the way that he fought and his jiu-jitsu game. I didn’t know any jiu-jitsu when I started practicing MMA, so seeing him with amazing grappling just made me want to do it even more. I remember the first time that I saw him, it was watching videos on YouTube, he was jumping out of a pool doing some strength and conditioning stuff, and doing some boxing and some fighting stuff, and I wasn’t even fighting yet.

“It means a lot, “Rodriguez continued. “It means the UFC wants me to prove [myself] one more time with this kind of fight. B.J. Penn is a two-time former champion, two different weight classes. Few people can achieve that in their careers. B.J. Penn is one of those guys and he knows what it takes to be a champion. You want to fight those kind of guys. This is just going to be amazing for me because he has a lot of experience and I can absorb that too.”

Rodriguez and Penn will meet in the main event of UFC Fight Night 103, live on FS1 from the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona tonight (Sunday, January 15, 2017).

Yair Rodriguez Feels B.J. Penn is ‘Acting Like an Amateur’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq0psjm4f3I

When Yair Rodriguez steps foot inside the Octagon tomorrow night (Jan. 15) he’ll be looking to extend his winning streak to eight. Standing in his way will be former two-division Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion B.J. Penn.

The two haven’t exactly been trading barbs, but Penn recently revved things up by claiming Rodriguez asked to fight him because he thought it would be easy. “El Pantera” is puzzled by Penn’s words and expressed his confusion at a media scrum.

“He’s an expert, like he said. He’s pretty good at what he does, and I respect him so much. The way that he talks isn’t going to change the way that I think about him. He said he’s a professional and he’s been in dozens of fights, and he’s acting like an amateur for now. For me, I’m not mad with him.”

Rodriguez had said before that he never asked for a bout with “The Prodigy.” He re-affirmed the media of his stance on the matter.

“I never asked for this fight. I don’t know who told him that, but it’s some fight that the UFC offered me and I accepted just like he did. I don’t know who created that lie, but I didn’t ask for this fight.”

“The Prodigy” is a UFC Hall of Famer and easily the biggest name “El Pantera” has ever encountered. Despite the accolades Penn has earned throughout his career, Rodriguez plans to treat him as he would anyone else.

“It’s an honor, but he’s a human being. I respect everyone else, it could be the President. I’d respect him the same way I respect you. It doesn’t matter who it is, I’m gonna respect them the same way.”

Tomorrow’s UFC Fight Night prelims will begin at 8 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 (FS1). The action will continue on the same network at 10 p.m. ET.

BJ Penn: Yair, Manager Conspired For This Fight

UFC Hall Of Famer BJ Penn will make his highly-anticipated return to the Octagon this weekend (Sunday, January 15, 2017), when he takes on No. 10-ranked featherweight Yair Rodriguez in the main event of UFC Phoenix.

Rodriguez and Penn used to train at the same gym, Jackson-Wink, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Penn tells MMA Fighting that he believes the young Mexican conspired with his manager to push for a fight against him:

“I think Yair and his manager saw me training at the gym (at Jackson-Winkeljohn) and thought, ‘this guy doesn’t have it anymore. Let’s fight this guy. He’s a big name, and let’s try to make our name off his.’ And that’s exactly how this fight got put together,” Penn said.

“Some people from the gym said, ‘hey, Yair is a p*ssy, he’s going to try to fight you because he thinks you’re older,’ and this and that. ‘His manager is trying to push for the fight.’ And I go, really, huh? I was talking to my buddies in Albuquerque, and then the UFC called me two weeks later and offered me Yair. That’s what it was.

“I don’t take it as disrespect,” Penn said. “I just laugh. And let’s just see. Let’s see if his intuition was correct.”

Penn’s last Octagon appearance saw him suffer a third round knockout defeat to Frankie Edgar in 2014, marking the Hawaiian’s third loss in a row at the time. ‘The Prodigy’s’ last victory inside the cage came in 2010 when he knocked out Matt Hughes in just 21 seconds at UFC 123.

Despite having one of the best careers in the history of mixed martial arts (MMA), Penn has not watched any of his fights for years now as he rather focus on the task ahead:

“I used to watch [my old fights] before, back in the day. I don’t know how many times I watched that first fight, me when I fought (Matt) Hughes and got the belt. I must’ve watched that so many times. But I haven’t seen any of my fights for years, and I haven’t been watching my fights that I lost, the fights that happened in the last five years,” Penn said.

“I wouldn’t want to sit there and just talk about the past, and say ‘oh, look how good I was,’ or, ‘I could’ve kicked your ass if it was back then.’ No, and I don’t [want to think] of excuses. I mean, look at Dan Henderson, Mark Hunt, Fabricio Werdum. All those guys. How can I have an excuse? They’re all in there. They’re all in their forties.”

Although he’ll be stepping into the cage with Rodriguez to go to war come Sunday night, Penn holds a great deal of respect for his opponent, or anyone who decides to make the walk to the Octagon for that matter, but believes that the experience and skill gap will be very visible when it’s time to throw-down:

“I’m a fan of everybody, I respect everyone. I’m proud of everybody who decides to take this path in life and chooses this profession. And I think he’s very good, a very solid opponent,” Penn said.

“But a lot of people are going to be surprised when I get out there. It’s going to look like a professional against an amateur. That’s what’s going to happen, and Yair is going to be surprised, his coaches are going to be surprised. They’re going be like, ‘oh, I thought this we were going to come between this easy fighter and his big name.’ But we’re going to see. They’re going to see.”

Rodriguez and Penn will meet in the main event of UFC Fight Night 103 on FS1, from the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona this Sunday night (January 15, 2017).
