Former duel-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor has claimed that he plans to model the remainder of his mixed martial arts career on the veteran former middleweight title challenger and now-Bellator light heavyweight contender, Yoel Romero.
McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the UFC banner, has been sidelined from the Octagon since July of last year, headlining UFC 264 against Dustin Poirier in an eventual first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss after he fractured his left tibia.
Spending the time since recovering, Conor McGregor, who recently turned 34 years of age, has been linked with a slew of potential matchups in his return to active competition, including fights against the likes of Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, Michael Chandler, Tony Ferguson, Rafael dos Anjos, and Jorge Masvidal.
Expected to return to the UFC in the early goings of next year, the Crumlin native has revealed that he plans to base the remainder of his career on the veteran Pinar del Rio native, Romero – with the 45-year-old recently turning in a dominant, buzzer-beating KO win over Alex Polizzi at Bellator Paris in May.
“The craftiness of Yoel (Romero) has always been incredible to watch!” Conor McGregor tweeted. “I am modeling (sic) the second half of my career off of this mad Cubano. @YoelRomeroMMA. Excited for the fights this evening.”
Replying to the Dubliner, Romero reminded the former duel-weight champion that he would be stopping by in the Irish capital next month for his third Bellator walk.
“Thank you so much @TheNotoriousMMA I will be in Dublin next month #seeyousoonboi,” Yoel Romero tweeted.
Snapping a run of four consecutive losses with his May win, Romero stopped Polizzi – who suffered a fractured jaw in the Paris showdown with a late third round knockdown.
The American Top Team staple has been heralded for his explosiveness and unmatched athleticism at his age, having landed a series of victories over former major champions including Lyoto Machida, Ronaldo Souza, Chris Weidman, and the returning, Luke Rockhold – who co-headlines UFC 278 later this evening.
Romero is slated to feature in the co-main event of Bellator Dublin in the capital next month in a rescheduled light heavyweight matchup with Suriname striker, Melvin Manhoef.

45-year-old Yoel Romero wound back the clock at Bellator 280 to snatch his first win in over four years. And it came right at the buzzer.
The “Soldier of God” had outclassed Alex Polizzi for most of the fight, having dropped him on four occasions. Then, with just one second on the clock, Romero gave the Parisian crowd what they’d come to see. Surging forward with fists pumping, the Cuban knocked Polizzi to the canvas before finishing the job with a huge right to the temple.
A far cry from Romero’s flying-knee KO’s of old, but still a worthy mention among the best MMA finishes of May 2022.

Flyweights Brandon Royval and Matthew Schnell were involved in a quick yet wild encounter at UFC 274. It all seemed to be going Schnell’s way when he dropped Royval and quickly pounced into top position. But that’s when Royval—a man with nine submission wins to his name—got to work.
Schnell soon found himself hopelessly ensnared in Royval’s jiu-jitsu and fending off multiple submission attempts. When those didn’t work, Royval separated and quickly reengaged to lock in a guillotine choke that had Schnell tapping in seconds.

It took him three attempts, but Anthony Pettis finally got his first PFL win in May—and a quick one at that. The 35-year-old started strong against Myles Price, sending him to the canvas with a right uppercut. On top and in control, “Showtime” then got to work.
Price did well to stifle any effective ground and pound and eventually scrambled out from underneath Pettis, then shortly after assumed top position. But “Showtime” used this to his advantage. Rolling Price into a triangle choke, Pettis then transitioned back into top position and squeezed Price into submission with less than a minute left of round one.
Andre Fialho could be the dark horse of the UFC welterweight division, and at UFC 274 he showed why. Fialho took a very measured approach early in his fight with VanCamp, stalking the American down and landing tentative strikes. But when VanCamp clipped Fialho, the Portuguese decided to throw caution to the wind.
His hands opened up and now free flowing, Fialho traded with VanCamp before holding back slightly and allowing the American to take the initiative. And when he did, Fialho landed a left counter that sent VanCamp collapsing to the canvas in stages.

Coming off a 16-second KO win on his UFC debut just three months prior, you couldn’t blame Chidi Njokuani for expecting to make quick work of Dusko Todorovic. But it’s fair to say that for most of this fight, things didn’t go to plan for the former Bellator and Contender Series veteran.
After failing to lock in a guillotine choke early on, a frustrating night of clinching against the fence and fending off single legs seemed destined for Njokuani. That was until “Chidi Bang Bang,” out of nowhere and with just 12 seconds left in the round, produced an elbow animated by such velocity that any follow up strikes were rendered glaringly unnecessary.

Somehow, Charles Oliveira turned one of the most disastrous weeks of his career into a triumph.
It took just over three minutes for the Brazilian to submit Justin Gaethje in their championship bout at UFC 273. And the manner in which he did it all but erased the fact that just a day earlier he’d become the first UFC champ stripped of their title for missing weight.
It was a frenetic, back-and-forth fight while it lasted. Oliveira rocked Gaethje early before the American returned the favor, sending Oliveira sprawling to the canvas. But soon after, the Brazilian took Gaethje’s back, landed some wicked elbows, attempted a triangle choke, and when that didn’t work, sunk in a rear-naked choke to get the win.
Olivera is now in rarefied air atop the UFC record books. His 16 submissions, 19 finishes and 18 bonuses earned in the promotion are unmatched by any fighter. And with 11 consecutive wins, he’s quickly closing in on Anderson Silva’s record of 16.

Many of us thought the greatest front-kick KO would forever belong to Anderson Silva. That was until UFC 273, where the best MMA finish of May 2022, and possibly the year, took place.
Eyes widened and lower jaws hurtled to earth when Michael Chandler’s foot made contact with Tony Ferguson’s chin—an impact that warped his face into a frighteningly ghoulish mess before it thudded almost in slow motion to the canvas. So nasty was Chandler’s punt that UFC President Dana White deemed it “the most vicious knockout” he’s ever seen.
Chandler isn’t someone who needs much of an excuse to launch himself into a somersault, and this KO was certainly reason enough to do so. The former Bellator lightweight champ repeatedly hurled himself through the air not meters from the seemingly lifeless Ferguson, who remained laid out unconscious on the canvas for several minutes.
We’d seen Ferguson beaten to a pulp before, namely two fights earlier by Justin Gaethje, but this was the first time he’d been knocked out in his career. And it came after a wild first round in which “El Cucuy” showed flashes of his former brilliance, rocking Chandler several times.
But just when we thought Ferguson might be back on track to challenging the best in the lightweight division, 17 seconds into round two, he was handed his fourth-straight loss with what may turn out to be the knockout of the year.

Suffering a brutal, one-sided third round knockout loss to former UFC middleweight title challenger, Yoel Romero at Bellator 280 earlier this month in Paris, France – promotional staple, Alex Polizzi has now revealed he also sustained a fractured jaw as a result of Romero’s bludgeoning.
Polizzi, who fell to 10-2 as a professional, made his debut under the Scott Coker-led Bellator banner back in September 2020, and replaced veteran kickboxing talent, Melvin Manhoef at the light heavyweight limit – meeting Cuban veteran and Olympic bronze medalist, Yoel Romero in the French capital.
Suffering a series of damaging knockdowns against the American Top Team staple, Polizzi was eventually finished with just a single second remaining in the third round of this fight, with Romero springing with another massive shot – landing another knockdown, and then following up with subsequent ground strikes.

The victory came as Romero, who was quince booked to challenge for UFC gold during his tenure with the organization, first since his move to Bellator – after he lost a unanimous decision defeat against former light heavyweight kingpin, Phil Davis at Bellator 266 in September of last year.
Revealing the extent of his injuries suffered against Yoel Romero, Polizzi detailed how he had injured his left foot during the fight, however, more worryingly – the six-fight Bellator veteran shared x-ray images of a fractured jaw suffered in his fight against the fan-favorite.
“Ope!” Alex Polizzi posted on Instagram, accompanied by x-ray images. “We should probably just heal and drink @milk for a bit.”
Off the back of his impressive win against Polizzi – which marked his first victory since a brutal February 2018 knockout success against former UFC middleweight best, Luke Rockhold, Romero has since been booked to fight the aforenoted, Manhoef in a rescheduled co-headlining clash at Bellator Dublin in September.

Michael Bisping is adamant that he did not duck the top contenders during his UFC middleweight title reign.
At UFC 199, Michael Bisping pulled off one of the biggest upsets in title-fight history when he knocked off Luke Rockhold on short notice to become the new UFC middleweight champion. This would mark the beginning of one of the most unusual championship reigns in company history.
The reign lasted 16 months with two title defenses, and neither defense came against a top-10 opponent.
First, Bisping took on Dan Henderson in a rematch of their 2009 clash that saw Henderson turn in one of the most memorable knockouts of all time. Bisping would then defeat Henderson via unanimous decision at UFC 204 to earn his redemption.
And who can forget the final bout of GOAT candidate Georges St-Pierre, who returned after four years of retirement to challenge Bisping for the title fight? St-Pierre would go on to defeat Bisping and join the UFC’s selective double-champion’s club consisting of fighters that won world titles in multiple weight classes.
During Bisping’s reign, names like Robert Whittaker, Jacare Souza, and Yoel Romero were in line to face Bisping at one point or another. The main reason none of those fights came together was bad timing, including Bisping dealing with lingering health issues.
Despite the health issues, Bisping was willing to put off medical procedures if it meant fighting big names like Nick Diaz or, as was eventually the case, Georges St-Pierre. This led to Bisping coming under some criticism at the time, and even a United States Congressman questioned a company official about the legitimacy of the UFC as a sport, using Bisping’s championship reign as an example.
During a recent post on his YouTube channel, Bisping defended UFC Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira’s calls for money fights against Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.
“The Count” believes Islam Makhachev is off base for referring to Oliveira as a coward for these callouts because mixed martial artists are ultimately prize fighters, and he used himself and his 2016-2017 title reign as an example.
“Listen, I was champion of the world for a period of time. And when I was there, I was supposed to fight Robert Whittaker, but he got injured. I was then supposed to fight Yoel Romero, but I got injured. I had to have surgery on my left knee. Of course, ultimately, I had to have that knee replaced.
“But in the meantime, a fight with Georges St-Pierre materialized. Georges St-Pierre, one of the biggest box-office smashes that the UFC had ever saw, he wanted to come out of retirement, come up to 185 because I presented a new challenge for him. And the cheeky bugger probably thought he could beat me as well, which, as we know, he did. So I took that fight against Georges, and it was a great fight.
“But more importantly, I made a lot of money. It was, by far, the biggest payday of my career. Now I wasn’t dodging anyone. No, I was taking on all comers. I was fighting whoever the UFC put in front of me. And that’s what I did all the time. I never turned anybody down. But when Georges St-Pierre came about, yes, I wanted that fight! Of course, I did.
“Number 1, thought I could beat him. But secondly, no offense to Robert or Yoel, they weren’t big pay-per-view stars. Georges St-Pierre was. He was huge. And him coming back was a massive storyline, and we sold almost a million pay-per-view buys. Robert and Yoel, I think they did like 200,000, so there you go.”
Michael Bisping now works as a color commentator during UFC broadcasts and also has his own podcast and YouTube channel where he shares his insight on various hot topics happening across the sport of MMA. Bisping’s final bout came three weeks after his loss to St-Pierre, where he lost to Kelvin Gastelum via KO.
Everything ultimately worked out for Robert Whittaker, who went on to become the undisputed UFC middleweight champion. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Yoel Romero and Jacare Souza, who both exited the UFC without ever capturing company gold.

Yoel Romero will now face Alex Polizzi at Bellator 280 following the late withdrawal of his original opponent, Melvin Manhoef.
The light heavyweight bout was initially reported by Dutch outlet Redactie Telesport. It will feature as the co-main event of Bellator 280, which will take place on May 6 at AccorHotels Arena in Paris.
Rising light heavyweight Polizzi is stepping in on short notice due to an injury sustained by Romero’s original opponent, Manhoef. According to Redactie Telesport, Manhoef was injured while apprehending three alleged attempted burglars.
Polizzi will go into the bout riding a three-fight win streak. The 30-year-old has lost just once since making his Bellator debut in 2020. In March this year, Polizzi defeated Jose Augusto Azevedo via rear-naked choke, and in September 2021, earned a split-decision win over Grant Neal.
Meanwhile, Romero will be attempting to achieve his first win in Bellator. The 43-year-old lost to Phil Davis via split decision in his promotional debut in September last year. Romero is now riding a four-fight losing streak, having previously lost to Israel Adesanya, Paulo Costa, and Robert Whittaker as a UFC middleweight.
