Featherweight standout Zabit Magomedsharipov has admitted his cardio isn’t the best after suffering with endurance issues during his past two fights.

The 28-year-old Russian contender visibly faded in fights against Jeremy Stephens and Calvin Kattar in 2019. However, he maintains he can do five rounds no problem in training, but is sometimes impacted by sickness, poor weight cuts or the rush of fight night. Speaking to Russia Today Sports he explained

“I
wouldn’t say that I’ve got the best endurance. I have no problems going five
rounds during training. Sometimes my weight cut doesn’t go as planned. I can
get sick. I use up a lot of energy, when you kick it takes a lot of you. If
it’s just boxing, I can easily go five rounds. When you do the same thing all
the time, it doesn’t take much energy.”

Magomedsharipov
believes the issue of his cardio is being blown way out of proportion. He has
had fans come up to him on a consistent basis worrying about his ability to go
the distance. So much so, he has now become zoned out whenever the topic gets brought
up.

“At first it was annoying. Now, I don’t pay attention to it. Every other person I meet wants to talk about endurance. Everything’s okay, but it definitely gets tiring,” he said. “It must be contagious; every other person tells you the same thing. I have trainers, after all, they probably know what I’m missing. I know myself.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Despite
questions surrounding his endurance the featherweight contender is having no
problems inside the octagon. He is 6-0 since joining the UFC and 18-1 as a professional
fighter.

Magomedsharipov is expected to return to the cage against Brian Ortega on April 18 on the UFC 249 card headlined by compatriot Khabib Nurmagomedov and lightweight title challenger Tony Ferguson. He’s rumoured to be facing top contender Brian Ortega, who will undoubtedly the toughest test of his career. A win in this one and Magomedsharipov could well be next in line for 145lb champion Alexander Volkanovski.

Will Zabit Magomedsharipov overcome his endurance issues and beat Brain Ortega at UFC 249?

Ortega Magomedsharipov

Although nothing is confirmed yet, former UFC title challenger Brian Ortega very much wants a fight with Zabit Magomedsharipov.

It was recently reported that a pivotal featherweight tilt between the two top contenders was being targeted for UFC 249 on April 18 in Brooklyn, New York.

It’s a fight that many in the mixed martial arts world have been waiting to see for months and Ortega is all in favor for it.

As for the reports of a fight at UFC 249, “T-City” is not sure what is happening as nothing is signed yet. However, he wants a five-rounder with Magomedsharipov.

“Just spoke to Brian Ortega (@BrianTcity) backstage,” ESPN’s Brett Okamoto wrote on Saturday. “He told me he is aware of the Zabit Magomedsharipov rumors but nothing is signed and he’s not sure what’s going on.

“He DOES want to fight Zabit five rounds. Says if Zabit wants to be a champ this year, take a five-rounder.”

Magomedsharipov has called for a title shot, but many, including Ortega evidently, believe he needs to prove himself by going five rounds. That’s because the Dagestan native has notably slowed down in many of his recent three-round fights.

If the fight takes place at UFC 249 — which is headlined by a lightweight title bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson — it would have to be a three-rounder.

But the pair is certainly worthy of headlining a Fight Night event where the winner would have a good claim for the next title shot.

UFC featherweight contender Zabit Magomedsharipov delivered a message to all his critics regarding his endurance and cardio.

Magomedsharipov is 6-0 in the UFC and is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Calvin Kattar in the UFC Moscow headliner last month. However, as he has done in the past, he slowed down in the third round of that fight.

It appears to be a common theme with the Dagestan native as it was also the case against Kyle Bochniak last year. Many also criticized Magomedsharipov for not accepting a five-round fight with Kattar, adding that it could have changed the outcome of the fight.

However, Magomedsharipov — who is yet to fight in a five-rounder in the UFC — believes his declining endurance is a tradeoff given how he usually fights.

”Many criticize my endurance without thinking about how much energy a non-standard work in a battle can take,” Magomedsharipov wrote on Instagram (translated from Russian via MMA Mania). “I always strive to please my fans, but, of course, we will pull the functionality up anyway.

“Entertainment in battle or a simple victory without risk? What would you give priority to?”

He has a point.

Magomedsharipov is one of the flashiest strikers in the UFC today and regularly mixes things up with striking and takedowns. There’s also the weight cut to consider as he is arguably the biggest featherweight in the division today.

Maybe these issues won’t persist if he fought at lightweight?
