The last time Jon Jones entered the Octagon in Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center he was a young fighter sporting a 12-1 record with the hopes of becoming the UFC’s light heavyweight champion.
Fast-forward just two years and Jones not only holds that title but is on the verge of tying Tito Ortiz’s record of five consecutive light heavyweight title defenses. If Jones can get past Chael Sonnen in the main event of UFC 159, which will take place on Saturday at the Prudential Center, he will tie Ortiz’s record while advancing his overall record to 18-1.
The evening’s co-main event will feature Michael Bisping facing off against Alan Belcher. These two middleweight contenders are both coming of defeats in their last bouts. With that hanging over their heads they’ll be in desperate need of a victory on Saturday to stay in title contention. Making the fight a bit more interesting is the fact that these two have not shied away from engaging in some not-so-friendly trash talk in the months leading up to the bout.
Also on the main card, Roy Nelson will face Cheick Kongo in a heavyweight contest, Phil Davis and Vinny Magalhaes will square off in a light heavyweight matchup and Jim Miller will meet Pat Healy in a lightweight bout.
