Nick Diaz‘s rumored promotion, War MMA, is appearing like more of a reality by the day.
After the launch of NickDiazPromotions.com and an associated Twitter account, MMAJunkie.com discovered on Monday that Diaz had applied for a promoter’s license in California.
Though there are still some hoops Diaz would have to jump through before being granted a temporary license, his team is already cementing a date for the first War MMA fight card. Sherdog.com spoke with a source close to the situation, who said the debut event would be held on June 22 at the Stockton Arena and that plans are in place for an internet stream.
Diaz pondered retirement following his loss to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 158, stating that he’d only return for an unlikely rematch with St-Pierre or nonsensical bout against middleweight champion Anderson Silva. With the news that he is taking this promotional business seriously, Diaz‘s supposed exit from MMA could be permanent this time around.
After losing to Carlos Condit at UFC 143, Diaz appeared to call it quits, but he was later tempted back into the Octagon by a title shot that many felt was undeserved. Now that there is even less justification for the rematch he wants with St-Pierre or nonsensical matchup with middleweight champion Anderson Silva, Diaz may have finally had enough.
If we have seen the last of Diaz as a fighter, he retires with three Strikeforce welterweight title defenses and a 7-5 UFC record.
The idea of a promoter version of Diaz is intriguing, if not hilarious. Diaz‘s second UFC stint will probably be most remembered for missed media obligations, which cost him a shot at the welterweight championship at one point. It doesn’t take much studying of UFC president Dana White to tell how important dealing with the media is in fight promotion.
