When former Pride FC champion Fedor Emelianenko announced last month that he’d be returning to MMA competition, he immediately become the biggest free agent on the market.

Given the Russian’s relationship with promoter Scott Coker while competing under the Strikeforce banner years ago, many believed Bellator MMA would be the promotion to land the MMA legend. However, Coker recently told MMA Junkie that Bellator MMA is not interested in signing Emelianenko at the moment.

“We’ve had conversations, but not about fighting,” Coker said. “I just felt Fedor is a great legend. He’s on the Mount Rushmore of MMA. We had a great time doing the fights together with Fedor (in Strikeforce). I felt like we’ve done it already with Fedor.”

“Let’s let him come back and see how it works out for him, and then maybe we’ll have him fight a couple years down the line, or next year, or whatever. The door is open, but I felt like at this point, Bellator is kind of on a little bit of a roll here. Would he add a lot of value? Yes. But we’re just going to sit back and see what happens.”

With Bellator MMA out of the equation for Emelianenko‘s return, it is looking more likely that The Last Emperor will finally appear inside the Octagon.

Although he is still considered by some to be the best fighter in MMA history, Emelianenko never competed for the sport’s most notable organization. Finishing his career with the UFC would allow him to fill a small gap in his otherwise outstanding legacy.

Should he join the UFC roster, Emelianenko would have a number of options for his return bout. Assuming he would still be competing in the heavyweight division, here are the best options for Emelianenko‘s first adversary in a potential UFC debut.

Frank Mir

Having spent almost his entire career competing under the UFC banner, Frank Mir has never had the chance to be matched up with Emelianenko despite being one of the best heavyweights ever.

Should Emelianenko sign with the UFC in the coming weeks or months, a bout between him and Mir could finally become a possibility. Although neither are in their prime, it would still be an intriguing matchup that could push the winner toward a title shot in an aging heavyweight class.

Mir has won two in a row and will have a chance to make it three in a row against Andrei Arlovski at UFC 191. While Emelianenko hasn’t competed in over three years, picking up a fourth consecutive win against the Russian would probably give Mir the boost needed to get another crack at UFC gold.

Mirko Cro Cop

Like Emelianenko, Mirko Cro Cop recently retired before deciding to come back to MMA.

Early in 2015, the Croatian resigned with the UFC and made his return against Gabriel Gonzaga. Although many believed Cro Cop had seen his last UFC victory, he was able to avenge a loss to Gonzaga by knocking the Brazilian out in the third round.

Now scheduled to meet Anthony Hamilton in November, Cro Cop will have a good chance to build some more momentum to set up a big fight. That fight could be a rematch with Emelianenko if the UFC is able to lock up the blue-chip free agent.

In August 2005, Emelianenko met Cro Cop in what became one of the greatest fights in MMA history. Emelianenko ended up walking away with the decision nod a decade ago, but Cro Cop would probably love the opportunity to avenge another memorable loss.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

With three straight losses, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira could be heading into retirement soon.

Having not said anything to that effect, though, it seems like he is holding on for one more big fight. There aren’t many bigger than a rematch with Emelianenko.

Emelianenko and Nogueira met twice under the Pride FC banner, with their first bout ending in a no contest and the second resulting in a decision win for the Russian. Given Nogueira’s downward trajectory, this wouldn’t be my first choice for Emelianenko‘s return matchup, but it could be the way to go if the UFC is looking to get The Last Emperor a win right out of the gates.

Francis Carmont to Meet Philipe Lins in Bellator 142 Tournament Alternate Bout

Another former UFC contender has been added to the equation in a one-night light heavyweight tournament at Bellator 142 on September 19. Previously a top middleweight, Francis Carmont will meet Philipe Lins in a tournament alternate bout at the event.

Another former UFC contender has been added to the equation in a one-night light heavyweight tournament at Bellator 142 on September 19. Previously a top middleweight, Francis Carmont will meet Philipe Lins in a tournament alternate bout at the event.

The contest was reported by MMA Junkie on Thursday, August 27.

Following a three-bout losing streak, Carmont was released by the UFC in 2014. He then signed with Bellator MMA and made his debut with the promotion as a 205-pounder in March. It wasn’t an overly memorable performance, but Carmont was able to get back into the win column in a decision against Guilherme Viana.

One of the bigger names under the Bellator MMA banner, Carmont is now in a position where he could have a chance to prove he’s a top light heavyweight. He’ll need some help, but anything could happen in a one-night tournament, so it’s definitely not out of the question that the Frenchman could find a spot in the Bellator 142 tournament finals as long as he beats Lins.

With a 9-1 record, Lins is no slouch, but he’s definitely going to be an underdog against the more experienced Carmont. The Brazilian definitely has more to gain from this matchup, even if an alternate is not needed for the light heavyweight tournament finals.

Former Strikeforce champion Muhammed Lawal, former UFC light heavyweight contender Phil Davis, former Bellator MMA champion Emanuel Newton and Linton Vassell are expected to competed in the light heavyweight tournament. With a number of big names competing in the intriguing, one-night event, it seems likely that the winner would end up challenging the victor of the Bellator 142 main event between Liam McGeary and Tito Ortiz for the light heavyweight championship.

UFC 193 Fight Card: Stefan Struve to Meet Jared Rosholt in Australia

A November bout in Melbourne, Australia, just got bigger than it already was. While it hasn’t been made official, the UFC is expected to add heavyweights Stefan Struve and Jared Rosholt to the fight card.

According to MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn, a source close to the UFC 193 event confirmed the planned bout.

Following a drought that lasted nearly three years, during which he was diagnosed with a heart condition that threatened to end his career, Struve recently got back into the win column by beating Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a decision.

Defeating Nogueira doesn’t mean what it used to, but it was a huge rebound victory for Struve, who is still only 27 years old and could make a run at a title shot if he is able to remain healthy.

Rosholt, meanwhile, has bounced back well from a deflating November 2014 loss to Alexey Oliynyk. The American has picked up back-to-back wins since then, improving his UFC record to a solid 5-1 mark.

Struve‘s reach should give him an advantage over most heavyweights, but the 7-footer’s tendency to carry his chin high has led to numerous knockout losses. That shouldn’t be a huge problem against Rosholt, though, who is definitely more of a wrestler than a knockout artist.

With four UFC submission wins, Struve could also threaten Rosholt on the ground if he’s unable to remain standing.

With UFC 193 still being pieced together, it’s hard to be certain where Struve and Rosholt will fall on the card. It seems they would either end up at the bottom of the main card or in a featured preliminary spot.

The event is headlined by welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit. It also features a heavyweight rematch between Mark Hunt and Antonio Silva as well as a bout between Michael Bisping and Robert Whittaker.

UFC on Fox 17 Fight Card: Nik Lentz Returns to 155 Pounds Against Danny Castillo

Although he was ranked among the top 10 competitors in the 145-pound division, Nik Lentz has decided to return to the lightweight division. The Carny will meet Danny Castillo at UFC on Fox 17 on December 19.

Although he was ranked among the top 10 competitors in the 145-pound division, Nik Lentz has decided to return to the lightweight division. The Carny will meet Danny Castillo at UFC on Fox 17 on December 19.

The matchup was announced by the UFC on Tuesday.

Lentz won his first three bouts in the featherweight class and rose into title contention. However, he ran into some tough opponents after that, losing to Chad Mendes and Charles Oliveira in two of his past three outings.

Falling against opponents like Mendes and Oliveira was nothing to get too discouraged about, so Lentz could be making a mistake in leaving the division in which he was an established contender. However, the lightweight landscape has changed since Lentz last competed at 155 pounds, so he might be able to make a run toward the top there as well.

Meanwhile, Castillo has lost three in a row. Despite the skid, Last Call has received another shot, likely because his most recent defeat came in a split decision against Jim Miller. Still, one would expect Castillo to see a lesser opponent than Lentz after such a long slump.

While the matchup might not make perfect sensegiven Lentz’s position in and Castillo’s absence from the UFC rankingsLentz and Castillo do match up well on paper. Both are solid wrestlers with some big wins on their resumes, so this should be competitive for all three rounds.

As UFC on Fox 17 is shaping up to be a stacked card, Lentz and Castillo will probably end up on the preliminary card. A lightweight title bout between Rafael dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone will headline the event, while heavyweights Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem will also appear.

UFC Fight Night 79 Fight Card: Dong Hyun Kim Set to Test Jorge Masvidal

With a knockout win over Cezar Ferreira in his UFC welterweight debut, Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal got the 170-pound division’s attention. Now, his title-contention potential will be tested by Dong Hyun Kim.

With a knockout win over Cezar Ferreira in his UFC welterweight debut, Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal got the 170-pound division’s attention. Now, his title-contention potential will be tested by Dong Hyun Kim.

The UFC Fight Night 79 matchup was confirmed by MMA Fighting on Saturday.

Prior to moving to the welterweight class, Masvidal was already considered a contender in the lightweight division. However, a controversial decision loss to Al Iaquinta halted his rise and caused him to look for a change of scenery.

Masvidal had competed at 170 pounds before joining the UFC roster, but he hadn’t picked up any huge wins in the division, as he lost to Paul Daley at Shark Fights 13. That said, Gamebred looked like a fighter who could make some serious noise in the division when he took less than five minutes to put Ferreira away in their July meeting.

At 30 years old, Masvidal is still in his prime and has a solid camp behind him at American Top Team. If he can improve to 2-0 in the UFC welterweight class against Kim, it’ll already be time to start considering him as a legitimate title threat.

Kim has been around the top of the 170-pound division for a while now, but he continues to fall short against elite opponents like Carlos Condit, Demian Maia and Tyron Woodley. With that, he is in danger of falling into a gatekeeper role, and that is exactly how he is being used against Masvidal.

He looked good in a win over Josh Burkman in his most recent outing, but Kim will need another impressive victory over Masvidal in order to get back into matchups that would push him toward his first UFC title shot.

The card has not been finalized, but Kim and Masvidal should find themselves on the main card of UFC Fight Night 79, which will be headlined by Benson Henderson and Thiago Alves in Seoul, South Korea on November 28.

UFC Fight Night 79 Fight Card: Mirko Cro Cop Set to Meet Anthony Hamilton

Following his surprising return to the Octagon in an April win over Gabriel Gonzaga, Mirko Filipovic will look to continue his resurgence opposite Anthony Hamilton. The heavyweights have been booked to meet at UFC Fight Night 79 on November 28.

MMA Fighting confirmed the matchup on Sunday.

Once considered one of the best heavyweights in the world, Filipovic fell on hard times in 2010 and 2011, when he suffered three straight losses. The skid prompted Cro Cop to retire from MMA, but he returned 14 months later with a Japanese promotion.

After recording three wins in the country where he got his career started, Filipovic signed a UFC contract, though few believed that he had enough left in the tank to compete with the elite heavyweights. The Croatian nevertheless silenced his doubters with a knockout win over Gonzaga in his return.

Now 40 years old, Filipovic is highly unlikely to make a run at a championship. However, he may have a few wins left in him after all.

With a 2-2 UFC record, Hamilton is a surprising choice as an opponent for Cro Cop. He is coming off of a win over Daniel Omielanczuk, but Hamilton isn’t the big-name opponent most would expect Filipovic to be paired up with at the back end of his career.

Another way to look at this bout would be that the UFC is looking to build Cro Cop back up into a title contender with another win or two.

Headlined by Benson Henderson and Thiago Alves, UFC Fight Night 79 is still shaping up, but one would figure that Filipovic and Hamilton will end up on the main card. The event will be held at Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul, South Korea.
