So…how about that?
Usually, UFC promotional videos for their pay-per-view cards follow a pretty straightforward example: stupid music followed by random highlights that stop on moments of impact, sometimes with random exclamations from Joe Rogan thrown in.
For UFC 165, though, the UFC is taking a different approach.
Tagged as “It’s So Big”, the UFC seeks to push the supposed “mind-blowing” status of the UFC 165 main event—literally, it seems, as we see veteran announcer Bruce Buffer and long-time commentator Mike Goldberg have their heads pop.
This is a bit of a departure from previous UFC promotional videos, particularly when it comes to UFC 165. Zuffa, the UFC’s parent company, has been relentlessly driving the supposed size edge that Alexander Gustafsson owns on Jon Jones. That discussion, in reality, is completely foolish, given that the overstated height and reach edges simply don’t hold up when the two stand next to each other.
Even so, there is no denying the giant status of the main event (Jones and Gustafsson combine for 12’9″). It also doesn’t hurt that there is a stacked card behind it, including an interim bantamweight championship between Renan Barao and Eddie Wineland, a potential top lightweight contender fight in Pat Healy vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov and a grudge match between The Ultimate Fighter 10 alumni Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub.
The UFC typically doesn’t do much when it comes to silly ads. So enjoy this while you can!
UFC 165 takes place this Saturday, Sept. 21 at 10 p.m. on PPV. You can also check out four of the preliminary fights on YouTube or Facebook, starting at 8 p.m. EST.
