Nate Diaz is likely confident heading into his highly-anticipated rematch with reigning featherweight champion Conor McGregor given the fact Diaz scored a second round submission victory over the Irishman when the two first met back at UFC 196 in March. However, his multitude of success doesn’t always lead to a positive mindset prior to stepping into the Octagon. In fact, the Stockton native revealed on last night’s (July 26, 2016) edition of ‘Conan’ that he goes into fights expecting to get finished:
“I write it off from the beginning like, ‘I’m probably gonna get knocked out,’” Diaz said. “Just take that and accept it. And then go in there and make it happen. When it doesn’t happen, when you come out with a win, that’s pretty exciting.”
You may find this as a somewhat strange view coming from a man who has only been finished twice throughout his lengthy 29-fight career, but the former title challenger claims that he’s just realistic. Diaz also admits that this mentality allows him to appreciate his victories that much more:
“They’re all full of it. I’m a realist, man,” Diaz said. “I accept the fact that there’s a probability you’re gonna get taken out and it’s gonna be pretty embarrassing. I accept that and go out there and don’t let it happen. And hopefully come out on top.”
Diaz vs. McGregor II is set to go down in the main event of UFC 202 on August 20, 2016 from Las Vegas, Nevada.
