A coach for Team Carwin on this season of The Ultimate Fighter, Pat Barry met Shane del Rosario in an intriguing battle of strikers in the heavyweight division. It was an appetizer for the main event, which also featured heavyweights Roy Nelson and Matt Mitrione.
Barry showed his stand-up superiority by knocking out del Rosario in the second round. It followed a first round where Barry found himself in some tough spots in the grappling portion of the match.
What we’ll remember about this fight
The knockout. Barry stunned del Rosario with a big punch and moved in for the kill. A pretty combo against the cage later, and Barry was standing victorious over his adversary. It was an awesome knockout that brings Barry back into the win column, while handing del Rosario his second straight loss.
What we learned about Shane del Rosario
Del Rosario is a good striker and has potential, but is going to be at the lower tier of the division for now. He can be a good heavyweight, but it is going to take some time.
What we learned about Pat Barry
Barry is still as dangerous of a striker as the day he walked in the UFC. He doesn’t get the respect he deserves from MMA fans, but he should, as he always puts on a great show.
What’s next for del Rosario
If del Rosario does not get cut, I would say a fight with Phil de Fries would work. If not de Fries, a meeting with Dave Herman, assuming he is not cut, would also work out fine to see who stays and who goes.
What’s next for Barry
I would love to see Barry rematch Cheick Kongo, as that was an amazing fight. If not, a meeting with Stipe Miocic would serve both men well.
