After more than seven years away, the UFC is returning to Washington D.C. on December 7th to provide mixed martial arts fans that live in the capital with an opportunity to see a high profile live event on their doorstep.

The main bout will see Alistair Overeem go head to head with Jairzinho Rozenstruik, after previously scheduled opponent Walt Harris was forced to pull out in tragic circumstances.

Main contenders

When it comes to the most important bout of the event, between Overeem and Rozenstruik, bookmakers seem uncertain about which of the two has the upper hand.

Some pip the pair as being neck and neck, with odds of 5/6 for both, while others see Overeem as having a slight advantage. It’s no surprise that the Dutchman is gaining slightly more favour with experts, as his experience and track record as a heavyweight competitor in both MMA and kickboxing makes him an appealing fighter to back. Rozenstruik does have age on his side, being eight years Overeem’s junior, although his slight height and reach disadvantage might cause him problems.

The main card also features a women’s strawweight bout between Marina Rodriguez and Cynthia Calvillo. In this case Rodriguez is again a marginal favourite, at least in some circles, although it seems like there is general acceptance that this will be a closely matched fight that is difficult to call ahead of time. Another women’s bout, between Aspen Ladd and Yana Kunistkaya, puts 24 year old American ahead of her Russian rival.

In all it seems like UFC on ESPN 7 will be an electric experience for the thousands of fans who are set to pour into the Capital One Arena, as well as the millions more who will be watching at home. People who want to place wagers on the outcome might not bag the biggest pay-offs from the way the odds are stacked at the moment, but that should not detract from the entertainment of the action. Perhaps playing casino games at Casumo while you watch will help keep things interesting between bouts?

UFC on Versus 6

The fact that this is only the second time that UFC has come to. is interesting in its own right, and deserves exploring in more detail in order to make some predictions about what will go down this time around.

Back in 2011 the first event in Washington D.C was capped off by a battle between Dominck Cruz, then the incumbent bantamweight champion, and Demetrious Johnson, who was considered the main contender to the title at the time.

Cruz managed to retain his title, putting on quite a show and living up to his reputation for incredible bursts of speed and some punishing attempts at submissions on his opponents. At the time, it was assumed that Cruz would walk home with a relatively easy victory, with detractors wondering if Johnson was really up to the task of taking on the champ. Even with this scepticism, the underdog did a good job of proving himself and certainly managed to match and even exceed Cruz in terms of raw speed.

Anthony Joshua is set to win big even if he loses against Andy Ruiz Jnr in their highly anticipated rematch. The popular Englishman is set to earn a whopping £66m as he challenges for the heavyweight titles, he lost earlier this year. (H/T Daily Mail)

Ruiz
Jr caused a monumental upset six month ago when he stepped in late to face
Joshua. After being floored himself in the third round, Ruiz returned fire and
put down the champion. Something he’d do three more times before the referee
stopped the fight in the seventh round.

The first ever Mexican heavyweight champion has accused Joshua of quitting to his face in the build up to the biggest fight of 2019.

Ruiz
Jr is also set to cash in on the rematch and is reportedly set to earn £10m to
put his belts on the line against Joshua.

Since
Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather boxers at the very top of the sport have been getting obscene
purses. In his cross promotional fight with UFC star Conor McGregor the
American earned £211m whilst the Irishman made £66m in his professional debut.

Whoever emerges victorious in Saudi Arabia has even greater riches waiting in their future. Mouth watering clashes with Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury are being demanded by the paying public.

The pair previously met for Wilder’s WBC belt and fought to an exciting yet controversial draw. Since going their separate ways they have continued to looked sensational and are now set to face off again in February 2020.

Once both rematches have been decided we will have the opportunity to unify the heavyweight division in a fight that will make more money than any other in the sport.

Should Anthony Joshua be earning more than the actual heavyweight champion?

Tony Ferguson has been talking up his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov .

Ferguson will challenge Khabib for the lightweight title at UFC 249 on April 18 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

This fight has become the most anticipated in all of MMA
after four previous bookings fell through. The pair have been scheduled to fight
in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Everyone is now hoping it will be fifth time luck
and we can actually see these two finally square off.

“El Cucuy” is currently riding a 12-fight unbeaten run in the
UFC which includes wins over Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, Kevin Lee, Rafael
Dos Anjos and Edson Barboza.

Ferguson played down the magnitude of the fight and accused Khabib of quitting in the build up to UFC 209 when speaking to Ariel Helwani. (H/T Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show)

“He’s
just another opponent. I already beat that dude. I showed up to UFC 209 and I
saw it in his face, I saw quit,”

The number one
lightweight contender also believes when they do fight Khabib won’t be able to
handle the pressure that comes with facing him.

“I
called him out, called my shot and it worked.
I’m in this dude’s head,” Ferguson said. “He’s looking at me. He’s going to
train so hard. He’s going to be so nervous he’s going to make a mistake. I’m
going to capitalize on that. I’m going to catch him during the scrambles.
Scrambled eggs, baby. I’m going to make him piss blood. I owe him two to the
chops, and he owes me 20 push-ups. This guys got an issue, and his name is Tony
Ferguson. And I’m coming after him. It’s hunting season, baby.”

Is Tony Ferguson the man to hand Khabib Nurmagomedov his first loss?

Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight!

Welcome to Midnight Mania!

I’ll be honest, I really was hoping to find a different headline for tonight’s article. The circumstances surrounding the abduction and murder of Aniah Blanchard — UFC Heavyweight Walt Harris’ step daughter — are neither “weird” nor “wild.”

It’s all just disgustingly sad.

Nevertheless, more details have emerged regarding Blanchard’s death and the subsequent case against her alleged killers. Lee County District Attorney Brandon Hughes revealed today that Blanchard was killed via gunshot by the first of the three men arrested, Ibraheem Yazeed, and that the prosecutors will seek the death penalty against him.

Here’s the relevant quote from Hughes, courtesy of MMAFighting: “In the interests of public safety, I can say that the investigation has determined Ibraheem Yazeed to be the lone person responsible for Aniah’s abduction and her murder and he remains in the Lee County jail without bond,’’ Hughes said on Monday. “Mr. Yazeed remains innocent of any charges against him until his guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

From its first moments, law enforcement moved swiftly and methodically to find Aniah’s abductor, her murderer, and her. The process of seeing justice done on behalf of Aniah and her family will not be swift, but it will be thorough. It is my intention that the response to this horrific crime serve as a warning to anyone who believes they want to come to Lee County and engage in violent criminal behavior. You will be dealt with and the consequences will be severe.”

There is no real solace in a situation like this, but at least it appears that justice will be swift.

Insomnia

Sorry if the rest of the article is not particularly zany — jokes don’t seem appropriate anymore. At any rate, John Wayne Parr ended his legendary combat sports career with a win over the weekend.

Justin Gaethje is down to step in in case UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson gets injured for their scheduled April title fight.

Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson will go one-on-one on April 18 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. According to veteran mixed martial arts (MMA) reporter Luke Thomas, No. 4-ranked UFC lightweight Gaethje is willing to stand by as a backup fighter in case either Nurmagomedov or Ferguson get injured ahead of April. Of course, he’d need to be properly compensated for his services.

“.@Justin_Gaethje tells me he isn’t against the idea of being a substitute in the event Ferguson or Nurmagomedov falls out, but it’s not his preference. Would need UFC to cover cost of a training camp. Still prefers to get winner of that bout.”

Nurmagomedov is one of the most dominant champions MMA has ever seen. He is undefeated in his career at 28-0, coming off a submission title defense over Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi. Now, he’ll take on the man who many believe has the best chance of handing him his first career loss.

Ferguson is on a ridiculous 12-fight win streak, his latest win being a TKO win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 238. He’ll finally get his long-awaited shot at, not just the lightweight title, but Nurmagomedov himself.

What do you think about Gaethje being open to standing by in case Nurmagomedov or Ferguson pull out?
