Chael Sonnen is full of praise for the “unintentional genius” Nate Diaz.

Former UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen has praised Nate Diaz for being an “unintentional genius.”

Diaz’s stock went up massively earlier this month when he defeated Anthony Pettis by decision at UFC 241. Calling out Jorge Masvidal after the fight, UFC president Dana White finally admitted The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 winner is now a “needle mover.”

Talking on a recent edition of his “You’re Welcome” podcast, Sonnen believes there is nothing pre-planned about Diaz, he’s admired for being “real” and “authentic.”

“I just think when you look at somebody like Nate Diaz, who unintentionally, many people will believe he’s a marketing genius and many people will believe he just stumbled into something. I believe he’s an unintentional genius. What he does is absolutely brilliant, I just don’t think there was a strategy ahead of time.”

The fight with Pettis was Diaz’s first since losing to Conor McGregor in their rematch at UFC 202 in August 2016. Diaz’s future seemed uncertain in his three years away from the cage, but it’s clear the 34-year-old has hit superstardom in the UFC, and Sonnen feels it’s because he is a “real guy” with “real problems.”

“One thing about him is he’s real. He’s authentic. When he speaks and he says something, there’s no tongue-in-cheek. There’s no winking, there’s no trying to get eyeballs and sell pay-per-views. There’s a real guy with real guy problems, from a real tough city in a real tough sport that’s trying to get by.

“There’s just something there that people can relate to and it’s special. It’s not overly creative, it’s not manufactured in any way. It’s basic, it’s humble, it’s clean, it’s honest. It’s compelling.”

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s featherweight champion Cristiane Justino, who rose to fame under the Strikeforce banner, is expected to announce her new home within the next 30 days … or less.

That’s according to a new interview “Cyborg” posted earlier this week on YouTube (transcribed by MMA Fighting). The front runners are Bellator MMA, ONE Championship, and RIZIN Fighting Federation.

“I believe I’ll sign my new contract in less than 30 days,” Cyborg said. “I’ll be online to tell everybody about my new place where Cyborg will be welcome. I have to thank Dana (White) for sending me a letter two days after my win. It really helped me to negotiate. I’ll be back to Brazil soon, for sure. It’s part of my plan for the new contract I sign and I am very happy.”

White wasted no time releasing Justino after this unfortunate incident.

Working in Bellator’s favor is the fact that promotion president, Scott Coker, is the same promoter who helped Justino establish herself as one of the all-time greats, thanks to a women’s division that crowned her champion and provided marquee fights against the likes of Gina Carano, among others.

“I’ve passed through many cycles already and in a cycle there is always beginning, middle, and end,” Justino said. “Invicta had an end, Bellator – no, [laughing] not Bellator yet – the UFC had a beginning, middle, and end. Strikeforce. So I’m starting a new cycle. I’m happy, anxious, looking forward to starting. It’s good to start new projects and I’m looking forward to that.”

Unlike UFC, which still does not have enough featherweight fighters to populate its official rankings, Bellator has a legitimate roster of 145-pound combatants, enough to keep “Cyborg” busy for the second half of her combat sports career.

Gregor Gillespie has finally called someone out.

The undefeated lightweight has not fought since January and many were wondering where he has been. He rarely does interviews and instead focuses on his time on fishing and training.

Yet, he has now decided to call someone out as he took to Instagram to release a video calling out Anthony Pettis to fight him at UFC 244. He believes “Showtime” is in the wrong weight class and wants to welcome him back to 155-pounds.

“So for the last 6 fights everyone has been pressuring and annoying me to call someone out….I never wanted to but it looks like I am going to have to play the game…I want my first “call out” to count so…… @showtimepettis I think you are a great fighter, but you are in the wrong weight class, come back down to 155 and meet me at MSG on November 2.
@arielhelwani @danawhite@showtimepettis @ufc @seanshelby”

Gregor Gillespie is currently 13-0 and 6-0 inside the Octagon. “The Gift” is coming off of a dominating TKO win over Yancy Medeiros back in January. His other wins are over Vinc Pichel, Jordan Rinaldi, Jason Gonzalez, Andrew Holbrook, and Glaico Franca. Before making it to the Las Vegas-based promotion he was the Ring of Combat lightweight champion and his final fight on the regional scenes was a win over Contender Series-alum, Sidney Outlaw.

Anthony Pettis, meanwhile, is coming off of a decision loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 241. He also broke his foot in that fight. Before that, in his welterweight debut in the UFC, he knocked out Stephen Thompson. The former UFC lightweight champion also holds wins over Michael Chiesa, Benson Henderson, Gilbert Melendez, and Donald Cerrone among others.

Whether or not Gillespie will get his wish is to be seen as Pettis has yet to respond.

Cain Velasquez surprised many in his pro wrestling debut. He looked like a person who had not been dealing with injuries. Instead, he was doing flips and pulling off other moves that many thought would be impossible for him to do.

Yet, Velasquez seemed to enjoy the moment and once it was finished he was shocked at the reaction.

“I was kind of shocked, to be honest,” Velasquez said to MMA Junkie. “I didn’t know what to expect, I wasn’t sure how many people would actually be watching and tuning in to watch, I did a match and heard all the positive things from people. It was great. I was shocked. The whole night I was asking my wife, ‘What just happened?’

“For me, I know what I can do and I feel like learning wrestling for the short time that I’ve learned it, it feels very natural to me,” Velasquez continued. “I loved it. I love going out there and competing and I can’t wait to do more of it.”

Now, with the success Cain Velasquez is having in wrestling, the question of if he will fight in MMA is to be seen. He returned to the Octagon earlier this year and was knocked out by Francis Ngannou in the first round. Before that, he last fought two-and-a-half years earlier.

Although wrestling is his new passion, he isn’t one to close the door on a possible return to MMA.

“I’ve always loved MMA as well from when I started doing it until now,” Velasquez said. “I’m still training and I still love it, so I’m not sure if I’m done yet. I still love MMA but pro wrestling is something I really love as well. It hit me by surprise and I wasn’t sure if I would like it or if I could even do it at first. I’ve become a natural to it. I love the acting side of it, the entertainment. I get to do stuff that’s physical then it also looks cool.”

If Cain Velasquez does not come back, he goes down as one of the greatest heavyweights of all-time.

Do you think Cain Velasquez will fight in MMA again?

Cris Cyborg is very close to signing with a new promotion just weeks after being released from the UFC.

Although things ended poorly for her, she says she has no regrets about her time in the UFC and how things were handled.

“Everything I did, I was always feeling in my heart. I don’t regret anything. ” Cyborg said on her YouTube channel (h/t MMA Fighting). “[The UFC] is in the past. It’s in the past since my last fight. I put it in the past in my heart, I believe I made a lot in the UFC, II believe I’m one of the girls who fought in the UFC who has more wins than losses.

I believe all places I’ve been had something special in it. With the UFC, I wanted to be fighting in the UFC. I went through all the hard time cutting weight to make my division and they made it. Amanda is the champion, there is a division. Every moment of my life I start a project and the UFC project was to have my division. I put an effort to get down to the division, I made it, and there is a division now.”

Meanwhile, now that she is a free agent, there is no doubt massive interest for Cris Cyborg. Promotions like Bellator and PFL has shown interest in her and the Brazilian now plans on signing soon.

“I believe I’ll sign my new contract in less than 30 days,” Cyborg said. “I’ll be online to tell everybody about my new place where Cyborg will be welcome. I have to thank Dana for sending me a letter two days after my win. It really helped me to negotiate.

“I’ll be back to Brazil soon, for sure. It’s part of my plan for the new contract I sign and I am very happy.”

Ultimately, Cyborg is just happy with the promotion she has picked. She will get to fight more and only strengthen her brand.

“When I ended my cycle with the UFC, I had two choices,” Cyborg said. “The option I chose, where I am now is the option where I see my future grow. I’ll be fighting more times a year, I won’t have any trouble, I’ll be happy. That’s what I see.”
