UFC Fight Night 127 injuries and medical suspensions for the athletes who competed at the “Werdum vs Volkov”-led mixed martial arts (MMA) event on Fight Pass last Saturday night (March 17, 2018) from inside O2 Arena in London, England, were released earlier this week and obtained by MMA Junkie.

Leading the list of mandatory timeouts is Jimi Manuwa, who could spend the next 180 days on the bench after having his face busted up during his three-round war against Jan Blachowicz, who won the fight via unanimous decision. Despite coming out the victor, Jan is also facing an extended hiatus following the “Fight of the Night” with an injured hand.

Furthermore, Fabricio Werdum will be out of commission for the next 60 days after having his clock cleaned by Alexander Volkov in the headlining bout.

The full list of UFC Fight Night 127 medical suspensions are as follows:

Alexander Volkov: Suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact for a forehead laceration.

Fabricio Werdum: Suspended 60 days with 45 days no contact for knockout loss.

Jan Blachowicz: Suspended 180 days unless left hand cleared by doctor. Additionally, suspended 30 days with no contact for 21 days.

Jimi Manuwa: Suspended 180 days unless nose cleared by ENT. Additionally, suspended 45 days with no contact.

Tom Duquesnoy: Suspended mandatory minimum seven days.

Terrion Ware: Suspended 30 days with no contact for 21 days for hard bout.

Leon Edwards: Suspended mandatory minimum seven days.

Peter Sobotta: Suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days for left eye laceration.

Charles Byrd: Suspended mandatory minimum seven days.

John Phillips: Suspended mandatory minimum seven days.

Danny Roberts: Suspended mandatory minimum seven days.

Oliver Enkamp: Suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days for knockout loss.

Danny Henry: Suspended mandatory minimum seven days.

Hakeem Dawodu: Suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days for choke loss.

Paul Craig: Suspended 30 days with no contact for 21 days for hard bout.

Magomed Ankalaev: Suspended mandatory minimum seven days.

Kajan Johnson: Suspended 30 days with no contact for 21 days for right eyebrow laceration.

Stevie Ray: Suspended mandatory minimum seven days.

Dmitriy Sosnovskiy: Suspended 180 days for right orbital fracture unless cleared by doctor. Additionally, suspended 30 days with no contact.

Mark Godbeer: Suspended 30 days with no contact for 21 days for hard bout.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases. In addition, not all injuries are recorded during the post-fight examination and often times surface in follow-up tests.

UFC ‘Atlantic City’ Loses Fight Following USADA Violation

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight contender Augusto Mendes has been notified of a potential United States Anti Doping (USADA) violation and has been subsequently pulled from his upcoming bout against Merab Dvalishvili, which was set to go down on April 21, 2018 at UFC Fight Night 128 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

UFC officials released a statement regarding the unfortunate news:

The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Augusto Mendes of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an out-of-competition sample collected on March 7, 2018. Due to the proximity of Mendes’ upcoming scheduled bout at UFC FIGHT NIGHT: BARBOZA vs. LEE in Atlantic City, New Jersey on April 21, 2018 against Merab Dvalishvili , Mendes has been removed from the card and the UFC is currently seeking a replacement. USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Mendes. Under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair legal process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed. Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward

As per protocol, details regarding what substance Mendes popped hot for were kept close to the vest.

“Tanquinho” hasn’t competed since losing to Aljamian Sterling in April of 2017. The Brazilian bomber was slated to make his return to action this past October against Boston Salmon at UFC Fight Night 119, but a leg injury forced him out of his scheduled fight against.

Depending on what kind of punishment USADA levies against him, it could be a very long time before Mendes sees the inside of the Octagon again.

Interim Title Fight Or Bust!

After catching wind of Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) decision to allow Daniel Cormier to move up to heavyweight to challenge division champion Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 on July 7, Alexander Gustafsson was none-too pleased.

That’s because “The Mauler — who is currently ranked No. 1 at 205 pounds — will have to wait longer to get a rematch against “DC” for the Light Heavyweight strap. As a result, the towering Swede has took it upon himself to ask UFC to give him an interim title fight for the time being.

“Me fighting D.C. [Cormier] for the real title, that opportunity went out the window,” Gustafsson said in a recent interview with ESPN.com. “I feel I earned my spot off my last performance — but here we are. With D.C. moving up, the next step for me should be for an interim title. I brought it up to the UFC. Let’s see what happens. All I know is that in my situation, whoever they put in front of me next, it must be for the interim title,” he added.

Before you slam “The Mauler’s” line of thinking, he does make an interesting point citing the fact that “DC” has already put a cutoff date for his combat career. Furthermore, Gus doesn’t rule out Cormier leaving the sport following his 265-pound title fight against Miocic.

“I feel like I’ve been taking fights and climbing ladders, climbing rankings, my entire career,” Gustafsson said. “I’m 31 years old. I still feel I’ll compete for many years, but right now, every fight has to have a thought behind it. It has to take me the right way. Every fight, you take damage. You take damage in your training camp. I just came back from an injury recently. I’ve got that fire in me, and I want to take a fight that will actually take me towards my goal, ‘he added.

”D.C. is moving up to heavyweight and that’s good for him and it’s good for the organization, but for me, the No. 1 contender, it’s not fair. It’s not fair at all. And no one knows what D.C. will do after this fight. He may put his gloves down and walk away,” he concluded.

Gustafsson is currently riding a two-fight win streak and was last seen schooling Glover Teixeira in May of 2017. Alex came up short in his bid to win the 205-pound crown at UFC 192 against Cormier via split decision back in 2015.

While UFC isn’t opposed to creating interim belts, is it necessary in this case seeing as how “DC” recently defended it in January against Volkan Oezdemir and could very well do again at the end of the year win, lose or draw against Stipe?

Meanwhile, Tyron Woodley — who hasn’t defend his belt in nearly eight months — was quick to shut down talks of an interim belt in his division, so it will be interesting to see “DC’s” reaction to Gustafsson’s proposal.

The UFC is ready to book Frankie Edgar’s Octagon return just weeks after suffering a first round knockout loss to Brian Ortega.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reports that the UFC is looking to book a rematch between Edgar and Cub Swanson for UFC Atlantic City next monty on April 21st from New Jersey. The pair initially fought back in 2014 where “The Answer” emerged victorious with a fight round submission.

Edgar’s knockout loss to Ortega took place just several weeks ago on March 3rd in the co-main event of the UFC 222 pay-per-view (PPV) in Las Vegas. It marked the first time the New Jersey native had been finished in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. The 36-year-old former 155-pound king was on a two-fight win streak and was originally scheduled to challenge Max Holloway for the featherweight title in the night’s main event. Unfortunately Holloway was forced off the card with an injury and Ortega stepped in as a last-second replacement.

Interestingly enough, Swanson also comes off a loss to Ortega. “T-City” pulled off a ridiculous second round submission over “Killer Cub” back in their main event meeting at UFC Fresno in December. It was the last fight on Swanson’s UFC contract and his pending fight against Edgar would be the first of his new deal. He was on a four-fight win streak before being stopped by Ortega.

Currently UFC Atlantic City is scheduled to be headlined by a lightweight contest between former interim UFC lightweight title challenger Kevin Lee and decorated striker Edson Barboza. Swanson vs. Edgar will serve as the co-main event of the evening as of this writing.

Jimmy Smith made his long-awaited Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) color commentary debut at UFC 221 on Feb. 21, 2018 in Perth, Australia, after making the jump over from Bellator MMA. Now, Smith will work side-by-side with perhaps the best in the business, as he will team up with Joe Rogan for the first time ever at the upcoming UFC 223 pay-per-view (PPV) event on April 7 in Brooklyn, New York.

Jimmy took to social media to reveal his plans of showing the combat sports world that he and Rogan are in fact two different people.

Rounding out the trio will be Jon Anik, since Daniel Cormier will be busy cheering on his teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov as he tries to rip the UFC lightweight title away from Tony Ferguson in the headlining bout.

In the co-main event, Rose Namajunas will defend her title against former division champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in a women’s strawweight championship rematch.

Smith, who previously worked for Bellator for the majority of his combat sports career, signed with UFC this past January just six months after Mike Goldberg — Rogan’s former co-pilot — inked a deal with the Viacom-owned promotion.
