So the UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor made his welterweight debut tonight (Saturday March 5, 2016) in the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a crazy night of fights that saw Holly Holm dethroned in her first attempted title defense against Miesha Tate, and the fun was just getting started there. When McGregor and Diaz finally faced off, the crowd was electric, and they did not disappoint.
The two brash trash talkers slugged it out in a thriller that didn’t even last two rounds, but very few people put money on how this fight ended. Diaz rocked McGregor in the stand up striking, and tapped him out when the fight went to the mat. It seems for all the hype and media coverage surrounding McGregor, it all means absolutely nothing on fight night.
So where did it all go wrong for Conor McGregor? Well, moving up two weight classes probably wasn’t the wisest idea in the first place, but was there an element of ‘The Notorious’ buying in to his own hype? The similarities between McGregor and former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey are eery, and they don’t end there.
Thje internet has reacted to the McGregor loss with a torrent of hurtful memes aimed at the fallen Irishman, who goes back to the featherweight division with a loss, albeit still holding his 145-pound title.

Looks like Holly Holm won’t get an immediate rematch after he loss to Miesha Tate at UFC 196. Tate-Ronda’s trilogy is about to be set.
In an appearance with ESPN following UFC 196, Dana White said Ronda Rousey will most likely get the title shot against the newly crowned champion in Miesha Tate upon her return. Here’s the dialogue Dana had with the hosts of the show, which included featuring former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen and Gilbert Melendez.
Melendez: That was a really close fight. Holly Holm was about 40 seconds from winning it. Do you think she deserves the rematch?
Dana White: No, I think that Ronda now will now fight Miesha Tate for the title – that’s what’s gonna happen. That’s what I said before this fight even happened. Whoever wins tonight will fight Ronda for the title.
Melendez: Have you heard from Ronda yet?
White: I texted Ronda – she wasn’t watching the fight. I texted her and she said, “What happened?” And I said, “Miesha just choked her unconscious.” She said, “Looks like I gotta get back to work.”
Melendez: That’s exciting!
White: Well, I don’t know what that means. (laughing) Ronda is scheduled not to come back until October or November. But it doesn’t mean I can’t ask.
Sonnen: You said that Ronda’s return match, that was supposed to be against Holly, could be all the way down the road to November. UFC 200, will you wait or would you like to speed it up?
White: Ronda Rousey has worked very hard for 3 and a half years for this company. She did everything that was asked, and went above and beyond the call of duty. If she wants to stay out until October, I will let her do that.

UFC President Dana White has confirmed that the new women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate will defend her title against Ronda Rousey next.
Tate beat former title-holder Holly Holm at UFC 196 on Saturday via submission, and speaking in the wake of the result, White revealed she’s now likely to face Rousey for a third time.
“I think that Ronda now will fight Miesha Tate for the title. That’s what’s going to happen,” White said, per Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com. “That’s what I said before this fight even happened. Whoever wins tonight will fight Ronda for the title.”
Rousey, a former champion herself, was beaten by Holm in shock circumstances at UFC 193 last year, the first loss of her professional MMA career. In her two previous bouts with Tate, she has triumphed on both occasions via armbar.

Justin Bieber has come out in support of UFC star Conor McGregor after his shock loss to Nate Diaz on Saturday night.
The Irishman was the big favourite with the bookmakers coming into the bout, but his opponent submitted him via a rear-naked choke in the second round. Despite the loss, Bieber revealed he’s still backing the Notorious and was left disappointed by the result in a post on his Instagram account:
“Still to McGregor. To McGregor!” he toasted in the clip. “He’s still the champ. That broke my heart.”
While McGregor remains the champion at featherweight, the step up to welterweight proved to be too much for him on the night.
Indeed, after a positive first round the Irishman seemed to get a little complacent in the second, allowing Diaz to land and was eventually forced to give up his back. Here’s a reminder of the remarkable finish to the fight:
While many will revel in McGregor’s loss given just how brash he can be in the build-up to fights, even the greats in the UFC suffer defeats. The Irishman should also be lauded for pushing himself to levels plenty of others have not done before and perhaps he can approach bouts with a little less pressure in the future.
And while he’s divisive, it’s clear McGregor will retain a huge fanbase moving forward, including Bieber, evidently.

Last night (Sat., March 5, 2016), Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko dueled at UFC 196 inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. In a back-and-forth battle, Nunes came out on top. Find out how below!
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Bantamweight contenders Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko battled last night (March 5, 2016) at UFC 196 inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Nunes has proven herself a dynamic finisher, one of the best in her division. If she could move past her experienced opponent in similar fashion, Nunes would be in great position to earn a title shot.
Similarly, Shevchenko established herself as a top contender recently. However, the kickboxing veteran accomplished that feat in just a single short-notice victory, and another victory last night would make her rise to the top quite incredible.
In an unexpected turn of events, the first round went rather slowly. Both women picked their shots slowly and were less than active. In particular, Shevchenko barely opened up at all, allowing her foe to run away with the round. Then, to really seal the round, Nunes scored with a takedown and finished on top.
It wasn’t pretty, but it was a clear round for Nunes.
Nunes didn’t waste much time in throwing her opponent back to the mat. Working from the half guard, Nunes brutalized her opponent with some hard elbows, opening some cuts. At one point, Shevchenko utilized a nice roll to return to her feet.
However, Nunes simply muscled her back to the ground.
Back on the mat, Nunes advanced into back mount. From that position, Nunes attacked with some punches and a deep rear naked choke, but “Bullet” stayed tough and defend.
Near the end of the round, Shevchenko reversed into guard, but it was far too little to win back the round.
Shevchenko needed a finish to win this bout, and she knew it. The Russian fighter started the round scoring with some big strikes and reversed a takedown into side control, where she attacked with elbows and an Americana.
With three minutes remaining, Nunes worked back to her feet but was clearly tired. While Shevchenko did put it on her and clearly win the round with some damaging strikes, she never turned it up enough to really push for the finish.
Ultimately, the judges correctly awarded Nunes the decision for her work in the first two rounds.
This was a strong performance by Nunes, who showed the ability to pace herself for the first time in her career. Normally, Nunes falls flat in fights that drag on past the opening frame, but this time she was dominant in the second and built up enough of a lead to ride out the victory.
Nunes’ strength advantage was quite obvious here. She simply manhandled the Russian in clinch exchanges and routinely held top position in scrambles, which allowed her to do major damage.
Following this win, Nunes is definitely up for a title shot. Depending on when Rousey returns, Nunes is either up next or will challenge for the belt following “Rowdy’s” return.
Either way, it should be interesting.
For Shevchenko, this revealed a couple of the flaws in her game. Perhaps most importantly, Shevchenko’s bottom game needs work, as she did a poor job scrambling up or even keeping herself safe from ground and pound. It’s obviously difficult against such a physical beast like “Lioness,” but Shevchenko wasn’t even trying to do the right things.
Additionally, Shevchenko’s size will make defeating the elite difficult. That’s not exactly her fault — there’s no women’s Flyweight division for her to drop down to — so it’s something to consider in the future.
On the bright side, Shevchenko’s kickboxing looked nasty in the final round when she opened up. If she can strike like that consistently, she’s still an elite Bantamweight.

Fight fans may have been shocked to see flashy striker Conor McGregor get dropped and choked out by Nate Diaz in the second round of their UFC 196 main event tilt on Saturday night (March 5, 2016), but the Stockton slugger was calm and collected.
“Nothing surprised me except for that I got hit at all,” said Diaz at the post-fight press conference. “I think with a full camp I would have been flawless.”
Diaz looked busted up and was sporting stitches over his right eye, but nevertheless persevered in a “Fight of the Night” performance against McGregor, who jumped up two weight classes for the matchup.
Although Diaz did give credit to McGregor’s striking and said he has power for a “little guy”, it was nothing he hasn’t felt before.
“I’ve been sparring with top 10 boxers forever. Otis Griffin, Omar Henry. I did a full camp with Andre Ward a couple of fights back when he fought Chad Dawson. And just going in there I’ve been hit with everything, the hardest stuff by 168-pound fighters. I sparred with heavyweight fighters and I’ve been hit with everything.”
As for the man to dethrone the King, Diaz said McGregor has received a lot of help in his run in the UFC and said he wishes he had the same help in his career.
“I’ve been in this a long time. I’ve been nine years. This was my twenty-fifth fight here in the UFC and I’ve been the last few years curious when this is going to pay off. And I think it’s time.”
As for McGregor, he was humble in defeat and offered gracious praise to Diaz’s performance.
“I respect Nate. He fought very well with his energy. I felt I won round one. I was winning round two. I felt toward the end he caught me with some shots. He stayed in it and he was very efficient with his energy. But I feel with some adjustments I will climb back up and make my case for that second belt once again.”
McGregor even suggested that Diaz deserves to fight dos Anjos next, perhaps giving the Irishman a chance to defend his featherweight belt during the interim before going up to 155 pounds to fight the winner.
