Wanderlei Silva’s long and winding road since evading a 2014 drug test finally has a resolution.

For almost two years, Wanderlei Silva has been in limbo. The former Pride and UFC star evaded a drug test ahead of a 2014 bout with Chael Sonnen, and was handed a lifetime suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for it. After a series of legal wranglings, that suspension was thrown out by a judge.

Today, Silva’s team finally had their chance to challenge the commission (who the case was returned to following the judge’s orders) on their jurisdiction regarding the suspension. Silva’s lawyer Ross Goodman grilled NAC head Bob Bennett about it for a while. Unfortunately, it didn’t get him very far, with one NAC member calling the line of questioning “insulting”.

Ultimately, Pat Lundvall wanted him to be issued a four-year suspension. Another member, Skip Avansino, lobbied for two years. In the end, they met in the middle. Silva was issued a three-year suspension, retroactive to May 2014. So he can return to the cage in May 2017.

The commission also ruled on his original $70,000 fine, deciding to rescind it since Silva never actually fought Sonnen.

Silva was also recently released from his UFC contract after apologizing for some comments regarding fixed fights in the Octagon.

Herbert Hoover, Charles Schwab… Vitor Belfort?

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight was just accepted into Stanford University, according to a recent Facebook post, because he worked hard and believed in himself. That’s mighty impressive when you consider Stanford had a five-percent acceptance rate in 2015.

“The Phenom” explains:

It is with great pride that I come to tell you that I was accepted at Stanford, one of the leading teaching and research universities in the world. I learned that education and sport are the basis for any person, but certainly education comes in first place. It’s never is too late to achieve your dreams. You just need to work hard and believe in yourself #teambelfort

Not coincidentally, the Brazilian now has the physique of a bookworm.

If Belfort wants an education in jiu-jitsu, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza may take him to school when they collide at the UFC Fight Night 88 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on FOX Sports 1, which takes place on May 14 in Brazil (more on that fight here).

Now all we have to do is figure out what the 38-year-old freshman plans to major in.

Longtime fighter, multiple world champion, and UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn is in some hot water.

Former writer at BJ Penn.com Peter Alex Carrasco alleged that Penn sexual assaulted his girlfriend recently. Carrasco blasted Penn on Twitter and then mentioned that there was an ongoing investigation into the alleged sexual assault.

Penn is coming out of retirement to fight at featherweight and was planning to fight at UFC 196. However, his fight had been pushed back to UFC 197 without an opponent for the event. With these new allegations, his fighting future is certainly in question and may be put on hold.

The UFC issued a statement on the allegations against Penn on Thursday, which you can read here:

“UFC is aware of the recent allegations made against BJ Penn. The organization requires all athletes who compete in the UFC to act in an ethical and responsible manner, as detailed in the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy. UFC will not tolerate violations of the policy. Every athlete is deserving of proper review and this situation, as with any serious allegation, will be investigated by an independent party and thoroughly reviewed by the UFC.  The UFC organization will also cooperate with any law enforcement investigation. In light of the serious allegations, UFC has postponed plans to book Penn for an upcoming bout until more details are determined.

UFC holds athletes who compete in the organization to the highest standard and will continue to take appropriate action, if and when warranted.  It is important to note that Penn is considered innocent until proven guilty and UFC is not prejudging this matter.”

Penn has yet to make a formal statement on the allegations.

Anderson Silva Trolls Michael Bisping For Kicking His Coach

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva wasted no time in busting Michael Bisping’s chops over his recent training blooper…

UFC middleweights Anderson Silva and Michael Bisping will headline the promotion’s trip to London, England next weekend (Saturday February 27, 2016) and there’s been a pretty fun rivalry between the two. As with all of Bisping’s previous fights for the UFC, he’s been very vocal ahead of his bout with the former champion, but he’s been gifted way more ammo than ever before. ‘The Spider’ failed a drug test for anabolic steroids after his UFC 183 scrap with Nick Diaz, and later claimed it was ‘tainted viagra’ from Thailand that caused the positive result.

For ‘The Count,’ this was just perfect grounds to start a rivalry, and he’s blasted Silva as a cheater who’s been doing it his whole career. A few trades of banter and a media scrum face-off have proved tame but also fun to watch, and now Silva has fired the next shot to Bisping’s camp.

Michael Bisping - anderson silva

After last week’s open workout blooper where ‘The Count’ blasted his own coach with a spinning kick to the face, his Brazilian foe sent out the following Instagram post:

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

A video posted by Anderson Silva (@spiderandersonsilva) on

Touché, Mr Silva, touché. So Michael Bisping will probably have a comeback to this taunt in no time, but it does raise a more serious question; does Michael Bisping have any chance in this bout? It’s questionable as to whether he has the wrestling chops to stifle Silva’s standing attacks, but surelyhe doesn’t plan to strike with him?

The British banger could end up in deep waters if he tries to trade with one of the greatest MMA knockout artists to ever live, but what other chance does he have? He can’t risk battling in the clinch with ‘The Spider,’ and it’s not like Bisping to lay and pray.

What do you think?

Conor McGregor Says He Will Fight At UFC 200 & Wants The Welterweight Title

conor

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has plans to move up to welterweight and face Robbie Lawler for the championship. Here’s what he had to say about what he hopes will be his third UFC title:

“I’m coming for that [welterweight] belt, I’m coming for the next belt, I’m coming for the whole company,” McGregor told SevereMMA. Why not go up?”

“They get slower, and they get less free up there, they are stiffer, they are even more stuck than the lightweight division. So I’ll keep going, keep eating, keep training and keep going until all the belts are wrapped up.”

“I’m afraid of no one, I will go up and fight any weight.” McGregor continued. “Anyone can come down and step in that cage with me or any cage and see how they fare, but nobody fares well that’s for sure.”

McGregor also confirmed that he has agreed to compete at UFC 200 in July, against an opponent to-be-determined.

“I’ll go back to ‘The Point’, no bother,” McGregor said. I haven’t outgrown that. I haven’t outgrown my home town. I’m still fucking here. Vegas this one, Vegas next one probably because I committed to UFC 200, I did commit to that, and then East coast or Dublin.”

McGregor is currently fight Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196 for the lightweight title on March 5th.
