Heavyweights Roy Nelson and Jared Rosholt came into their fight in the co-main event of tonight’s (Sat., February 6, 2016) UFC Fight Night 82 from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas at different points of their mixed martial arts (MMA) careers.

No. 11-ranked ‘Big Country’ was looking to prove he still belonged in the UFC after losing five of his last six bouts, while No. 12 Rosholt was seeking to show he deserved a spot in the Top 10.

The fight predicted to play out in Rosholt’s favor if it hit the mat, and obviously is ‘Big Country’s’ if it unfolded in the stand-up. Nelson began stalking Rosholt early, holding his trademark overhand right cocked. Not much was thrown in the opening moments, but ‘Big Country’ controlled the Octagon.

Nelson rushed forward with a combo that narrowly whiffed, but Rosholt landed two strong punches. A few seconds later, tagged Nelson with the fight’s most significant strikes after he caught him rushing in. Rosholt used a stick-and-move gameplan to avoid Nelson’s big power by staying out of his way in an uneventful first round.

In the second, Rosholt went for a takedown but missed, eating a counter left from Nelson. ‘Big Country’ landed a massive leg kick that appeared to hurt Rosholt, but Nelson didn’t take advantage. Rosholt continued to stay far from Rosholt, snapping a body kick while earning boos from the crowd. Finally, Nelson found a home for some big punches, unleashing two strong combos before a scramble resulted in the end of the second frame.

The third and final frame saw Nelson start with a second huge low kick, and he surprisingly went for a takedown that had little chance. Nelson swung wildly, landing intermittent shots and keeping his pressure of Rosholt high. Rosholt then went for a deep takedown but was stuffed, and the low-on-action bout came to an end with more wild swings from Nelson that failed to land.

It wasn’t pretty, but ultimately Nelson took home the fight by unanimous decision.

Final Result: Roy Nelson def. Jared Rosholt via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

UFC Fight Night 82: Joseph Benavidez Takes Dominant Decision over Zach Makovsky

Zach “Fun Size” Makovsky, while enterprising and tough, could not outwit or outmuscle No. 1 flyweight Joseph Benavidez at UFC Fight Night 82 in Las Vegas. The three-round bout saw Benavidez answer anything Makovsky threw at him with ease. Despite Makovsky getting several takedowns, Benavidez stayed composed throughout the fight and his masterful performance earned him the unanimous decision.

Benavidez was on a four-fight win streak coming into this fight, with his last loss coming via KO in a title fight against flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. In fact, his four losses have come to Johnson or bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. Otherwise, his record is a stunning 24-0.

No. 8 flyweight Makovsky’s last fight was a decision loss to second-ranked John Dodson. Somehow, that translated to a shot at first-ranked Benavidez. The opportunity to leapfrog over several other contenders, potentially to a title eliminator fight, was a big one. But whether the Tristar Gym fighter took Benavidez down—which he did, several times—or engaged in striking, Benavidez proved too wily. UFC Vegas noted Benavidez’s precision strikes:

Makovsky managed to get several advantageous positions on Benavidez, including a standing rear mount with body triangle and several guillotine setups, but he could never fully capitalize on them. Benavidez’s methodical, calm defense made Makovksy’s attacks look like little more than nuisances to be batted away. The Team Alpha Male fighter knocked Makovsky down toward the end of the third with a combo that included a spinning elbow, but the bell rang before Benavidez could finish him off. Bloody Elbow pointed out Benavidez’s ability to consistently control the fight, even during the vulnerable moments:

After the announcement, Benavidez said he thought wrestler Henry Cejudo hadn’t earned a title shot, and asked to fight him for a title elimination. However, moments before the fight, third-ranked Cejudo was announced as Johnson’s next opponent for UFC 197, per UFC.com’s Thomas Gerbasi. It’s not as clear now who Benavidez should face next, except, perhaps, the winner of Johnson vs. Cejudo. He’s beaten most of the top 10, and there’s no one above him, except the champ.

Makovsky has now gone 2-3 in his last five and may be showing some wear and tear and, despite his excellent nickname, does not offer much name recognition in the sport. Ali Bagautinov or up-and-comer Justin Scoggins are possible opponents for him, as Makovsky may act as a gatekeeper for the division.

With this win, Benavidez’s overall record is 24-4. The next flyweight title defense is at UFC 197 on April 23 in Las Vegas, with Johnson and Cejudo as the co-main event.

Two former Strikeforce light heavyweight bruisers did battle on the main card of UFC Fight Night 82. Former Strikeforce 205-pound title holder Rafael Cavalcante (12-7) took on Ovince St. Preux (19-7) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

St. Preux threw out a high kick that got blocked. “Feijao” missed a leg kick. A lunging straight right hand from “OSP” was blocked as well. St. Preux landed a leg kick, but seemed to land wrong and started moving gingerly. Cavalcante took advantage with heavy leg kicks. “OSP” ate a right hand, but he landed a left hand and dropped “Feijao.” The round ended with St. Preux in top control.

Round two saw “OSP” move around a bit better. Cavalcante continued to be hesitant and was in defensive mode. “Feijao” opened up with a right hand. “OSP” landed two solid jabs. St. Preux dropped an off-balanced Cavalcante once again. “OSP” stood in full guard and rained down hammerfists. “Feijao” survived the round.

An uppercut found the chin for St. Preux. Cavalcante swung wild and “OSP” avoided danger. St. Preux went for a takedown and pressed his opponent against the cage momentarily. The second takedown attempt was successful. Cavalcante regained closed guard, but didn’t do much off his back. St. Preux seemed content to grind out a decision win. “OSP” landed some stiff punches late and the final horn sounded.

Unsurprisingly, all three judges awarded the win to St. Preux.

Final Result: Ovince St. Preux def. Rafael Cavalcante via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

A big week for high-profile fight announcements got even bigger after Saturday’s UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs. Thompson event on FOX Sports 1.

In addition to the CM Punk vs. Mickey Gall fight being confirmed, UFC also announced a pair of title fights for their UFC 197 pay-per-view in April.

Headlining the event on 4/23 will be the highly-anticipated rematch between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier, as “Bones” Jones looks to win back the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship he never actually lost in the Octagon in a rematch against D.C.

Cormier lost to Jones in their first meeting in January of 2015, but ended up being the man who became the new champion after Jones was stripped of the title following a hit-and-run incident in New Mexico.

The co-main event at UFC 197 will also feature a five-round title fight, as UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson defends against former Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo.

UFC 197 is scheduled for April 23, 2016 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The same scenario played out seconds later. Makvosky earned a takedown and got both hooks in. Benavidez quickly got out and the round came to a close.
