Forget Saul, Better Call Sean!

To put this in musical terms, Alex Hernandez went from Steely Dan to Limp Bizkit in one single training camp.

That’s because “The Great Ape” made the not-so-great decision to drop down to the 145-pound weight class to battle Billy Quarantillo at the UFC 282 pay-per-view (PPV) event last December in Las Vegas, which ended with a second round technical knockout loss.

And a picket-line penis.

“I’ve got some of the best nutritionists in the world, Perfecting Athletes is the group I go with. It’s not like I wasn’t eating it was just small man,” Hernandez told reporters at the UFC Vegas 69 media day (transcribed by Express.co.uk). “It was rough, it was the roughest. It wasn’t like I was moaning every day, I was locked in, but my d*ck didn’t even work in the morning. I was Gender X, just moving through for three months. Just a straightforward path.”

Hernandez, 30, returns to the lightweight division to throw hands opposite battle-tested veteran Jim Miller as part of the UFC Vegas 69 event this Sat. night (Feb. 18, 2023) at APEX in Las Vegas, following a 155-pound fight camp that freed him of “pain and struggling.”

Things are looking up, so to speak.

“Doing that for enough time probably weighs on the brain a little bit,” Hernandez continued. “It was tough, everything was low. Everything was depleted. I felt strong though. I felt fast, I felt faster than I’ve ever felt. The conditioning was fantastic, but I just needed to keep the mental game right. I just needed to remember why I was doing all this pain and struggling for.”

Coach expects Conor McGregor, Michael Chandler fight to resemble Chad Mendes win: ‘It’s an exciting one’

Straight Blast Gym head coach, John Kavanagh has briefly broken down his student, Conor McGregor’s expected UFC return against lightweight contender, Michael Chandler later this year – explaining how he expects the matchup to resemble the Dubliner’s 2015 fight with Chad Mendes, where he clinched the interim featherweight championship.

McGregor, a former undisputed UFC lightweight and featherweight champion, touched down in Las Vegas, Nevada yesterday, as he prepares to begin filming The Ultimate Fighter 31 against the above-mentioned, Chandler, with the duo expected to fight at the finale of the reality television show.

Conor McGregor landed in Las Vegas this week to begin filming for TUF

Yet to officially book a date for their pairing, Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler, who are expected to fight at the welterweight limit of 170lbs, have been floated for a potential September clash.

In the midst of a two-fight losing skid to common-opponent, Dustin Poirier, McGregor’s next Octagon outing will come as the first since he fractured his left tibia and fibula en route to a doctor’s stoppage TKO loss back in July 2021.

As for Chandler, the Missouri veteran also suffered his most recent defeat to Poirier – who submitted the former with a third round rear-naked choke at UFC 281 in November at Madison Square Garden.

Previewing his product’s return against Chandler later this year, the above-mentioned Kavanagh explained how he believes the Dubliner’s fight with the former could very well resemble his 2015 interim featherweight title triumph over Mendes.

“I think it (Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler) could resemble a little bit the (Chad) Mendes fight,” John Kavanagh told Sherdog. “Mendes was that style; blocky guy, (with) big punches, (with) big double legs. I think that’s how it could go. Conor (McGregor) has a good record against those kind of orthodox, stocky wrestlers with big overhand rights and big double legs.”

“It’s an exciting one to prepare for,” Kavanagh explained. “Chandler – he’s an excellent fighter, he’s got a great résumé.”

Headlining UFC 189 against Mendes at the MGM Grand back in 2015, McGregor rallied after finding himself on the receiving end of multiple takedowns in the first and second round, to finish the Team Alpha MMA staple in the final seconds of the second frame, capturing the interim featherweight title.

Gervonta Davis agreed to a plea deal in a Baltimore court this week.

The Baltimore Sun reports that undefeated boxing superstar Gervonta Davis plead guilty to four counts related to a 2020 hit-and-run incident this week. Through a plea deal with prosecutors, Davis admitted to leaving the scene of an accident involving bodily injury, failing to notify an owner of property damage, driving on a suspended license and running a red light.

Davis is scheduled to be sentenced on May 5. The convictions could see him serve some jail time, as well as pay several fines.

The hit-and-run incident occurred around 2 a.m. on November 5, 2020 after David left a nightclub in downtown Baltimore. Davis’ entourage had arranged a police escort to shepherd Davis from the club to his hotel.

However, Davis diverted from the path of his escort and ran a read-light on a busy city thoroughfare. After doing so, he slammed his Lamborghini SUV into the passenger side of a Toyota Solara that held four occupants.

Davis left the scene of that accident, in a Chevrolet Camaro that came to the scene of the crash, without checking on the occupants of the Toyota or alerting emergency services. The occupants, including a pregnant woman, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Davis’ lawyers had previously submitted a plea deal offer to the court that would have seen Davis serve 60-days of unsupervised home detention. However, Judge Melissa Phinn rejected that offer after hearing testimony from one of the people hurt in the crash.

Jyair Smith told the court that her knee was seriously injured in the incident and she remains affected by the injury despite multiple rounds of physical therapy. Smith said the injury had left her unable to play with her children or go to work.

“He looked me in the eyes, and he never came over to help,” Smith said, describing Davis’ actions at the scene of the hit-and-run.

Smith is also pursuing a civil case against Davis.

Davis’ guilty plea comes a few months after his arrest in Florida on suspicion of domestic violence. Davis was charged with battery after a woman made a frantic 911 call where she alleged Davis had hit her and was going to kill her. The woman later walked back her claims.

Davis was also arrested on suspicion of domestic violence in 2020, after he was caught on camera grabbing his girlfriend by the throat and removing her from her seat at a University of Miami basketball game.

Davis’ last fight was an easy TKO win over Hector Garcia on January 7. With that mandatory WBA (Regular) lightweight title defense out the way, Davis is expected to face WBC interim lightweight champ Ryan Garcia in a super-fight on April 15.

Jon Jones Daniel Cormier UFC 285 Commentate

Former undisputed UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier has claimed that he “doesn’t need permission” to commentate arch-rival, Jon Jones’ return to the Octagon at UFC 285 next month, however, admitted that it was nice to hear the Rochester veteran acknowledge that he will provide non-biased commentary.

Cormier, a former undisputed light heavyweight and heavyweight champion under the banner of the UFC, twice shared the Octagon with former two-time light heavyweight best, Jones, suffering a unanimous decision loss before a rematch high-kick TKO was then overturned to an official ‘No Contest’.

Jon Jones urged Daniel Cormier to commentate his return at UFC 285

Sharing an infamous and heated rivalry with former Jackson-Wink MMA stalwart, Jones over the course of their respective UFC tenures, Cormier had been urged to commentate at UFC 285 by Jones himself, who makes his heavyweight bow in a vacant title fight against former interim titleholder, Ciryl Gane.

“DC (Daniel Cormier) you are more than welcome to commentate at my fight, I think you are really good at what you do,” Jon Jones tweeted. “I trust that you would be non-biased. All the best brother.”

Responding to Jones’ comments and invitation to commentate at the T-Mobile Arena, Cormier admitted that he did not necessarily need the former’s permission to hold sticks at the event.

You guys know how I feel about (Jon) Jones and how we have felt about each other in the past,” Daniel Cormier said on his YouTube channel. “But it leads me to this question. How do I take this? This particular tweet, which at times feels like a compliment, but also could be interpreted as a bit of a dig – considering at times, people call me biased in my commentary and all this other stuff. First, just for the record, I don’t really need permission to call someone’s fight.”

“I’ll be honest with you, it’s kind of nice hearing a fighter acknowledge – that even with our history, he (Jones) believes that I can do him justice and do the job fairly – because I’ve done it before,” Daniel Cormier explained. “It seems now that Jones is maturing. He seems to be taking a much different approach to the build to the fight and how he’s approaching everything. But it feels nice for him to acknowledge, ‘I think this guy could do me justice.’” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Calling time on his decorated mixed martial arts career back in August 2020, Cormier failed in his bid to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion as he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Stipe Miocic in their trilogy rubber match at the UFC Apex facility.

Khalil Rountree has had a truly remarkable journey through life and martial arts that has led him all the way to UFC 307 this weekend. In his 15th Octagon appearance, he will look to leave Salt Lake City as the light heavyweight champion by dethroning Alex Pereira.

Rountree has really come into his own in recent years as one of the division’s most dangerous strikers who doesn’t let opponents off the hook once he has them hurt.

Though he doesn’t plan on using his grappling at the Delta Center, a former UFC champion recently told a story about how a bad experience in training, which ended up being a vital lesson, had Rountree questioning what he was doing.

Training With a Young Khalil Rountree

On their last preview of UFC 307 before fight night, Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen got together in Salt Lake City for another episode of ESPN MMA’s Good Guy / Bad Guy.

During the episode, Cormier revealed that he had trained with Rountree over ten years ago but couldn’t remember it whatsoever.

He recapped the story of how he went hard on the newcomer to the sport with his wrestling pedigree which after some wise words from his coach, ended up being a positive experience for Rountree who was at the very beginning of his career.

“I got a story about me and Khalil, I guess we trained together and I just didn’t know it. Way back in 2011, Wanderlei Silva’s gym. Brett Okamoto told me that Khalil told him that he had just started, guy walks in, we start sparring. I obviously don’t know how to spar at that time, it’s 2010.

He goes, I completely just started wrestling him and he said that when it was over, he was like, ‘I think I’m done fighting forever.’ He said his coach goes up to him and goes, ‘go and Google his name,’ saw my credentials in wrestling and was like, ‘okay, now I understand.’ But it taught him get better everywhere so this can never happen again.”
