Congressmen condemns Dana White-Backed Power Slap League: 'Traumatic brain injury isn't entertainment.'

Dana White’s Power Slap League continues to receive a rigorous round of criticism from people who watch it. Recently US Congressmen Bill Pascrell Jr. and Don Bacon weighed in on the situation.

New Jersey’s Ninth District Representative Bill Pascrell Jr. and Nebraska’s Second District Representative Don Bacon penned a letter to TBS and Warner Bros, in regards to the dangers of Dana White‘s Power Slape League.

See the full letter below:

On Twitter, they added:

“Today @RepDonBacon and I are asking TBS and Warner Bros about their crass new TV show “The Power Slap” glorifying terrible violence. Where are the warnings to this mindless violence? Traumatic brain injury isn’t entertainment.”

Dana White’s Power Slap League and Brain Damage

US Congressmen are not the only people to levy criticism towards the sport. Worldwide slap leagues have been condemned and needlessly dangerous. Polish slap fighter Artur Walczak died after being hospitalized post a slap match.

Neurologist Dr. Nitin Sethi spoke with IB.TV and laid out what kind of injuries would be common in Dana White’s Power Slap League. The Neurologist explained:

“Open-handed slaps delivered with such force to the opponent’s face frequently cause the person’s legs to buckle, at times suffer momentary – sometimes longer – loss of consciousness, and collapse to the floor. These are all concussive injuries of varying duration. The ‘athlete’ who is on the receiving end of the slap has no option available to him to defend himself. These ‘slaps’ will add up. In my professional opinion, those who partake in this ‘sport’ will also suffer the stigmata of chronic neurological injuries.”

Dr. Nitin Sethi continued regarding Power Slap League:

“I disagree with the argument that better medical supervision of this ‘sport’ shall make it safer. I am not sure what a physician is meant to supervise here other than being the overseer of concussive injuries occurring under his or her watch.”

Former Strikeforce world champion Nick Diaz has weighed in on UFC champion Alex Pereira’s boxing skills.

On Instagram, the UFC middleweight world champion ‘Poatan’ Alex Pereira shows off some of his skills on the pads.

“Holding pads for Alex Pereira gotta be the scariest job of all time”

Nick Diaz posted this on his Instagram Story with the caption:

“I don’t see it.”

The dangerous power of Alex Pereira is questioned by Nick Diaz

Getting into the boxing ring seems like the normal path for former MMA fighters. Brazil’s Alex Pereira already has experience in a professional boxing match having won his boxing debut by way of knockout in round 3.

‘Poatan’ is also famed between MMA and kickboxing for his thunderous knockout power. His dangerous left hook has led to dozens of knockout wins between the two sports. In GLORY Kickboxing, Pereira was able to become a two-division world champion. Upon entering the UFC, he was able to go on a consecutive KO win streak to capture the middleweight crown.

Pereira defeated his rival Israel Adesanya last year in the fifth round to earn the UFC middleweight world title at UFC 281. Adesanya will be seeking to recapture his lost gold when they rematch at UFC 287 at the end of April later this year.

Nick Diaz is a former Strikeforce world champion who has fought the likes of Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva, among others. He has not fought since his TKO loss to Robbie Lawler in 2021. It is not certain what the future of Nick Diaz will be.

Maybe VanZant doesn’t want to do this anymore – BKFC President

“She’s making a lot of money doing her other businesses and maybe she doesn’t want to do this anymore.”

Former UFC star Paige VanZant has so far been 0-2 in her bare-knuckle boxing stint. “12 Gauge” was set for her third fight under BKFC in August, but was forced out of the scheduled contest due to “logistical reasons.”

The 28-year-old has yet to finalize her next bare-knuckle boxing bout. But BKFC president David Feldman is also looking at the possibility that VanZant may choose to not return to action.

“I’m going to be talking to her this week and there’s a possibility that she returns on a big card we’ve got in April. If she doesn’t, then it’s probable that she won’t be coming back to BKFC,” Feldman told Mirror Fighting.

“She’s making a lot of money doing her other businesses and maybe she doesn’t want to do this anymore. I will find out this week.”

For Feldman, VanZant’s next career move lies heavily on her motivation rather than money. VanZant, who signed a supposed multi-million dollar deal with BKFC in 2020, once claimed to be earning more with her social media posts than with fighting.

“She is definitely welcome with the organization, it’s just a matter of what she wants to do. I think this helps her other revenue streams, it gives her notoriety to be able to get fans for her other revenue streams.

“I don’t think she’s going to turn it down because of money, I think the only reason she would turn it down is if she doesn’t have the desire to fight anymore.”

Ultimately, Feldman has been satisfied with his decision to sign VanZant, as he feels it benefitted all parties involved.

“She got paid significantly more with BKFC than she got in the UFC. Signing her made sense to me because everybody said why does this cover model want to get punched in the face with bare knuckles. The intrigue and curiosity factor got them to tune in.

“It may have not worked for someone else but it worked for me. I got my money’s worth out of her and if I had the opportunity to do the exact same thing all over again I would do it. Here was Paige VanZant, people were talking about her but she came over to bare-knuckle and she’s now making significant money.”

VanZant’s last BKFC appearance happened in July 2021 against fellow UFC veteran Rachael Ostovich. She lost via unanimous decision.
