Dan Hooker has recently gone on record accusing one of his former opponents, UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, of cheating prior to his bout opposing Hooker’s teammate, Alexander Volkanovski, at UFC 284.

Hooker made no excuse when he was submitted in the first round against Makhachev back in October of 2021, but he did make the following post after Volkanovski failed to become a two-division champion:

The champion responded to Hooker’s allegations earlier today with a tweet of his own, demanding Hooker be held accountable for such accusations:

Islam Makhachev‘s manager Ali Abdelaziz also responded, before deleting it.

Luckily for us, Ariel Helwani saved it before he had a chance to:

This has turned into quite a sticky situation; while Australia commissions allow the use of IV’s prior to a fight, USADA, whom works for the UFC, does strictly prohibit athletes from using them.

Islam Makhachev and his team have denied using an IV to begin with, though Abdelaziz’s tweet has drawn speculation amongst the MMA fanbase.

Had Makhachev used an IV following their weigh ins prior to UFC 284, it certainly could’ve aided him in a number of ways. One, it could aid him in cutting more weight than others not using an IV, and two, it could have helped him push through the fight without being finished.

Many fans and media had Makhachev beating Volkanovski three rounds to one going into the fifth, and Makhachev was noticably fatiguing at that point. Volkanovski dropped him in that fifth and final round, and rather than trying to get back to his feet, Makhachev accepted bottom position for the rest of the fight – the greatest grappler and wrestler in the sport right now, who’d never been on his back in the UFC until that point, accepted bottom position. That tells you how absolutely drained he was.

So, there’s certainly benefit to using IV’s pre-fight.

Let’s just hope for Makhachev’s sake he really didn’t and this truly is just an accusation.

Do you think Islam Makhachev used an IV before his fight at UFC 284?

BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) president, David Feldman has admitted that former UFC strawweight and flyweight challenger, Paige VanZant will likely land a last chance saloon fight offer to compete in April of this year, or face the possibility of leaving the organization.

VanZant, a veteran of the UFC before making her debut under the BKFC banner back in February 2021, the Oregon native made her promotional bow in a unanimous decision loss to Britain Hart at BKFC Knucklemania in Miami, Florida.

Rematching past UFC opponent, Rachael Ostovich at BKFC 19 back in July 2021 in Tampa, Florida – VanZant suffered her second consecutive loss under the scrutiny of the promotion, in the form of another unanimous judging defeat.

Back in August of last year, Paige VanZant was scheduled to fight against Charisa Sigala at BKFC 27, however, the matchup was then booked for October, with the bout ultimately then scrapped ahead of fight week.

Paige VanZant set to be offered April return to the BKFC

Seeing her activity under the promotional banner hampered amid her high-profile signing, VanZant has been handed somewhat of an ultimatum from the aforenoted, Feldman – who explained how he would float an April return, or likely call time on her tenure with BKFC

I’m going to be talking to her (Paige VanZant) this week and there’s a possibility that she returns on a big card we’ve got in April,” David Feldman told Mirror Fighting. “If she doesn’t, then it’s probable that she won’t be coming back to BKFC.”

“She’s making a lot of money doing her other businesses and maybe she doesn’t want to do this anymore, I will find out this week,” Feldman continued. “I don’t think she’s going to turn it down because of money, I think the onl y reason she would turn it down is if she doesn’t have the desire to fight anymore.” (Transcribed by MMA News

8-5 across her professional mixed martial arts career, VanZant’s most recent UFC outing came back in July 2020 against Brazilian grappler, Amanda Ribas, suffering a first round rear-naked choke loss in Abu Dhabi, UAE on “Fight Island’.

Here’s what Islam Makhachev had to say about Alexander Volkanovski keeping his top pound-for-pound ranking.

UFC 284’s headliner was a battle between the top two pound-for-pound fighters, Alexander Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev. Makhachev ended up winning via decision, and he expected to claim the top spot.

Tuesday rolled around and lo and behold, the smaller Volkanovski is still at number one. Makhachev was asked about these developments in his return to Russia, and this is what he had to say:

“About the rankings, I never expected justice and still don’t. Because we saw on the example of our other fighters: Ankalaev, Petr Yan. Saw the attitude towards us, always,” Makhachev said.

“The main thing (is) I flew 13,000 kilometers there, defeated their champion. They raised my hand, and with a raised hand confidently with a belt, flew home.”

With a close and competitive fight, some would argue that Volkanovski should’ve been the rightful winner, while others also see why Makhachev was awarded the victory.

The two fighters are also looking at a possible rematch since Volkanovski isn’t planning on defending his featherweight title any time soon.

Carlos Mota, who jumped to UFC after scoring the flyweight title for LFA, was cut from the promotion after drawing a two-year suspension from NSAC.

Former LFA champion Carlos Mota was expected to breathe new life into a stalled 125-pound division, which spent the last two years trying to settle the score between Deiveson Figueiredo and Brandon Moreno. Instead, the 27 year-old Brazilian was cut from the promotion after flunking a UFC drug test last fall.

That’s according to a report from MMA Fighting.

Mota tested positive for the metabolic modulator meldonium in the wake of his unanimous decision loss to Cody Durden at UFC Vegas 63 and will now have to fork over a whopping $2,848 in fines. In addition, the 8-2 Brazilian was suspended for two years by NSAC and won’t be eligible to return to MMA until Oct. 29, 2024.

Even Durden thought the punishment was excessive.

“How did they come up with two years? That’s harsh,” Durden wrote on Twitter. “Give the man some slack. One year would suffice IMO.”

Prior to his lone appearance under the UFC banner, Mota was king of the flyweight castle for LFA, laying waste to Rizvan Abuev by way of first-round knockout roughly two months before his Octagon debut. Unfortunately his suspension will be honored by neighboring commissions, so Mota is out of work for the next two years.

Surging UFC welterweight prospect Carlos Prates looks set to have the chance to make a splash on yet another big stage next month.

Prates (20-6) has put the 170-pound division on notice in three fights since earning a contract on Dana White’s Contender Series last year. The Fighting Nerds standout announced his arrival with knockouts of Trevin Giles and Charles Radtke.

“The Nightmare” delivered most impressive performance to date last time out at UFC 305 in Perth, Australia, where he put a beating on formerly ranked contender Li Jingliang en route to a brutal KO.

It appears that Prates will have the opportunity to keep his ball rolling at an even bigger pay-per-view event in a few weeks’ time, with Ag. Fight reporting that he’s verbally agreed to share the cage with Randy Brown (19-5) at UFC 309 on November 16.

The numbered event is set to take place inside the prestigious surroundings of Madison Square Garden in New York City. Headlining will be a long-planned heavyweight showdown between champion Jon Jones and legend Stipe Miocic.

While Prates looks to make a statement on the undercard, his veteran opponent will have an upset in mind. “Rude Boy” has won three straight since being submitted by Jack Della Maddalena, most recently outpointing Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos at UFC 302 this past June.

With this addition, the current fights expected to take place at the New York-held UFC 309 event on Nov. 16 are as follows:

  • Jon Jones (C) vs. Stipe Miocic (heavyweight championship main event)
  • Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler (lightweight co-main event)
  • Bo Nickal vs. Paul Craig (middleweight)
  • Nikita Krylov vs. Azamat Murzakanov (light heavyweight)
  • Chris Weidman vs. Eryk Anders (middleweight)
  • Carlos Prates vs. Randy Brown (welterweight)
  • Viviane Araújo vs. Karine Silva (women’s flyweight)
  • Jonathan Martinez vs. Marcus McGhee (bantamweight)
  • Mickey Gall vs. Ramiz Brahimaj (welterweight)
  • Karine Silva vs. Viviane Araújo (women’s flyweight)
  • Veronica Hardy vs. Eduarda Moura (women’s flyweight)
