Evander Holyfield and Vitor Belfort will take the stage on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET live in the embedded video above for their final pre-fight press conference ahead of this Sat. night’s (Sept. 11, 2021) heavyweight boxing match from inside Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., live on pay-per-view (PPV).

Holyfield is a late replacement for Oscar De La Hoya, who was forced to withdraw from his “Phenom” fight after contracting COVID-19. Joining “The Real Deal” on stage will be former UFC champions Anderson Silva and Tito Ortiz, who collide in cruiserweight action in the “Legends II” co-main event.

Adding a little controversial flavor to this weekend’s boxing extravaganza will be former U.S. President Donald Trump, taking over commentary duties for reasons not quite understood, though it’s unclear if the real estate mogul will be around for today’s presser.

Melvin Manhoef was laying a beating on Robbie Lawler… until he wasn’t.

The “Ruthless” one lives up to his nickname.

If there was one fighter who perfectly lived up to the hype behind his nickname, it would be Robbie Lawler. Especially during his prime years, it was difficult not to have mad respect for the man and the unmatched tenacity he brought into every fight.

The “Ruthless” made 170 pounds his home for the majority of his career, decimating several elite names in the division. But long-time fans would vividly remember his short stint at middleweight, particularly his fight against the menacing Melvin Manhoef at Strikeforce: Miami in 2010.

We knew what Manhoef brought to the table. The man was a known finisher on the feet, which also made him very deserving of the “No Mercy” monicker. He entered the Lawler fight with a 24-6-1 record; 23 of those wins ended via knockout or TKO.

Right off the jump, Manhoef made his intentions known. He was punishing Lawler with thudding kicks to the leg and body. And when he got close enough, he’d let his hammer hands do the work.

Lawler had no choice but to cover up and be in a standing fetal position. Manhoef appeared to be on the brink of another dominant finish… until it all changed in a snap.

Upon absorbing another devastating inside leg kick, Lawler counters with a right hand that cleanly lands on the button. Seconds later, Manhoef is laid on his back, staring at the ceiling lights glassy-eyed as the ref puts a stop to the action.

I will go out on a limb and say that this is probably Lawler’s most spectacular finish. We may or may not see this kind of ending from him again, but at least we’ll always have this fight to look back on.

Dan Hardy is the latest MMA personality to defend the oblique kick as a legitimate strike in MMA.

Since Khalil Rountree Jr’s finish of Modestas Bukauskas via an oblique kick, many have spoken out either for or against the strike. Many fighters like Kelvin Gastelum and Belal Muhammad have come out to call for the banning of the oblique kick. The fighters are arguing that the strike could end someone’s career.

Hardy is the one of many like veteran referee Marc Goddard, to speak up or the oblique kick and keep it a legal MMA strike. Even Bukauskas has defended Rountree’s utilization of the oblique kick that caused this debate. Hardy had this to say about the kick,

“It shouldn’t be banned, It’s an effective technique,” Hardy told Submission Radio. “If we start banning effective techniques, then we’re going to find ourselves with a very, very limited rule set. I think that we need to recognize that it’s an occupational hazard. On football fields, rugby pitches, up and down, around the world on a weekend basis, people are getting their knees destroyed in the same way that Modestas did. It happens very rarely in MMA. Anybody that says it should be banned, have them name three people that it’s happened to because it’s very difficult to recall any time when it actually happens in MMA. It’s the same as knees to the head on the ground as well. For every now and then when they do land, there’s so many times when they don’t. It’s one of those techniques that’s very difficult to land. It’s more beneficial to throw it earlier in the fight when the leg’s a bit dryer and those kind of things, but it’s such a difficult thing to land in the first place, if you can stop a fight with it, then well done. I have no problem with it.

“I can’t even believe that it’s been brought up as something that we should consider banning. It fries my brain. Honestly, it does. And the fact that professional fighters would come out and say it, you’re in the wrong sport. You’re doing the wrong thing if you’re concerned about picking up a knee injury. You know what you’re doing when you get in there. You sign a death waiver when you’re stepping in there to fight. Suck it up.”

The debate has taken off among the MMA world and seems to have heated up a bit with Hardy seemingly calling out some fighters that speak against the kick. Only time will tell if the kick will be deemed an illegal strike inside the octagon.

Oscar De La Hoya was expected to make his return to the “sweet science” this Sat. night (Sept. 11) against former UFC champion Vitor Belfort, but a late case of COVID-19 sent the 48 year-old “Golden Boy” into the hospital.

Or was it a case of CHICKEN-19?

“I’m not trying to disrespect Oscar, I saw the video of Oscar, but if I’m being honest, I’m still skeptical,” Belfort’s trainer Derik Santos told Vegas Insider. “Something about it didn’t seem right. The level of how bad it looked. I know you can still get COVID if you’re double vaccinated, but it didn’t seem right. Maybe he realized we were taking the fight seriously, I don’t know.”

Stepping in for De La Hoya is former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield, who will hold a significant size advantage over “The Phenom” but turns 59 next month and raised his fair share of eyebrows with this recent video.

“As far as I know, [De La Hoya’s] side didn’t try to jump out and reschedule like others have, so yeah, I’m a little skeptical,” Santos continued. “I think he thought, ‘What have got myself into?’ He even posted this. We were going in there to give him a very good boxing match. We were ready. If the man does have COVID then I wish him a good recovery, I’m just mildly skeptical.”

De La Hoya has since been discharged from the hospital and hopes to make his boxing return at some point in late 2021 or early 2022.

Jake Paul

Jake Paul has shown off a brand new custom-made AR-15 via his Instagram.

The post was a highlight reel of Paul showing off all the things he had done after beating Tyron Woodley by split decision. The custom gun has ‘Gotcha Hat’ and ‘Jake Paul’ on it. The ‘Gotcha Hat’ is Paul’s favorite move that he uses to try and embarrass his opposition. Originated when he took Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather’s hat at the Logan Paul vs Floyd Mayweather press conference. He also tried grabbing Woodley’s hat at their face off as well, but was unable to grab it and almost started a brawl.

This childish tactic had repercussions as Paul took a few lumps from Mayweather and if you listen closely you can hear ‘Money’s fist hit ‘The Problem Child’s face. Paul’s victory tour over Woodley also included partying with up and coming star Sean O’Malley as well (this can be seen in the 4th slide of Paul’s Instagram post).

The post was rounded out by a screenshot of as tweet saying “Jake Paul is what boxing needs”, due to his ability to get big names to watch his fights. Love Paul or hate him it has to be said that he does make a lot of money for the promotions. He also gets a ton of eyes on his fights and seems to be up for challenges.

Whether or not Paul will fight again is yet to be seen as he has flip flopped back and forth between retirement. One thing for certain is, he has had a lot of fun before, during, and after the fight. ‘The Problem child’ for sure knows how to live it up.

Do you enjoy Jake Paul’s antics? Would you like to see him fight again?
