[ORIGINAL STORY PUBLISHED AUGUST 22, 2021, 8:00 AM]

Miesha Tate 2.0 will face her next challenge when she faces top-10 bantamweight Ketlen Viera in the main event of the October 16 Fight Night.

As reported by Combate, both Tate and Viera have verbally agreed to fight one another in an October headliner. There were rumblings of a potential fight between Tate and Aspen Ladd that have surfaced lately, but while Ladd prepares to face Macy Chiasson in a rebooked fight on October 2, the revamped version of Miesha Tate will face Ketlen Viera.

Former UFC bantamweight champion Miesha Tate made her Octagon return in July in a TKO victory over Marion Reneau. This was Tate’s first fight in nearly five years but one couldn’t tell by the skilled display and easeful composure the legend displayed in the win. After defeating Reneau, Tate returned to the top 10 of the bantamweight rankings and is currently placed at #8, which is only one spot below her opponent this October, #7-ranked Ketlen Viera.

Even though Viera is coming off a loss in her most recent bout to Yana Kunitskaya, a strong argument can be made that this is a significant step up in competition for Tate. Firstly, Viera is currently ranked much closer to the top of the division than the now-retired Reneau was. Also, the fact that Viera is still in her prime at 29 while Reneau is 44 makes it fair to view this bout as a boost in difficulty for the 35-year-old Tate.

Tate has made it clear that she is not back in the UFC fold for a farewell nostalgia tour, though, so for her to continue climbing the ranks she once ruled, she’ll have to charge towards the growing fire on her path back to championship gold.

We will keep you updated on the lineup for this October 16 Fight Night card right here on MMANews.com.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) return to action last night (Sat., Aug, 21, 2021) to stage UFC Vegas 34 from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the main event of the evening Jared Cannonier defeated Kelvin Gastelum via unanimous decision (see it again here). In the co-headlining act, Mark Madsen narrowly escaped with a split decision win over longtime veteran Clay Guida.

Biggest Winner: Jared Cannonier

It wasn’t a walk in the park, but Cannonier picked up a huge win over Kelvin Gastelum to put him back in the win column. Ranked No. 3 in the promotion’s Middleweight division, “Killa Gorilla” likely set himself up to be in the running for a championship fight against Israel Adesanya, assuming things completely fall apart during contract talks for “The Last Stylebender’s” rematch against Robert Whittaker. Adesanya was already lobbying for a fight against Cannonier a while back, so “Killa Gorilla” is sitting pretty at the moment in the championship picture following his latest win.

Runner Up: Alexandre Pantoja

Current UFC Flyweight champion Brandon Moreno doesn’t have a dance partner just yet for his first title defense, though all signs point to Askar Askarov. But since nothing is official, Pantoja took his shot and called out “The Baby Faced Assassin” after scoring a big submission win over Brandon Royval, giving him his second straight victory. And he has a great chance of landing the fight because not only is he ranked No. 3, he is the last man to defeat Moreno, beating him via unanimous decision in 2018. The potential rematch against the Mexican-born champion sells itself, so it wouldn’t be a shocker if the promotion took this route.

Biggest Loser: Kelvin Gastelum

Coming into the event, Gastelum was the fighter we felt needed a win the most since he was just 1-4 in his last five fights under the UFC banner. Now, the former TUF winner is 1-5 in his last six after coming up short against the aforementioned Jared Cannonier, giving him his second straight defeat. It’s not like Gastelum is getting dominated or finished during his bad stretch, he has actually been very competitive with every high-ranked foe he’s faced since 2019 sans his lightning-quick submission loss to Jack Hermansson. But that fact remains he has only won a single fight during this stretch. Where he goes from here is anyone’s guess, but I’d roll the dice in saying the promotion likely won’t cut him after coming up short in his last bout. That being said, a big fight likely won’t be in his future right away should the promotion keep him around. Gastelum will also have to go back to the drawing board to see what changes he has to make to start closing out fights.

Jared Cannonier knows exactly what he wants after defeating Kelvin Gastelum.

Cannonier and Gastelum did battle in the main event of UFC Vegas 34. The action took place this past Saturday night (Aug. 21). Both men made it to the final horn. After five rounds of action, Cannonier scooped up the unanimous decision victory.

During a post-fight media scrum, Cannonier made it clear that he’s only interested in fighting for the UFC Middleweight gold or competing in a number one contender match next (h/t MMAJunkie.com).

“It’s either title or contender. It was supposed to be (Paulo) Costa, but that didn’t happen. I really need to fight. I don’t think (Israel Adesanya) or Robert (Whittaker) are going to fight until next year. So that’s what? Four, five, six months, even? Then, another three and four months after that, I can’t wait that long. So who knows, I may end up taking the fight.”

It’s a solid rebound win for Cannonier, who was coming off a unanimous decision defeat to former UFC Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker. Cannonier will likely remain at the number three spot on the official UFC middleweight rankings. He has gone 4-1 in his last five bouts.

Gastelum can’t seem to shake his misfortune. He’s lost five of his last six outings. For many, it’s a disappointing slide as Gastelum had an instant classic with current UFC Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya back in 2019.

Cannonier may have to wait if he’s expecting a title opportunity anytime soon. It was reported that a title rematch between Adesanya and Whittaker has been pushed back to 2022 due to COVID-19 restrictions globally. As far as other top middleweights are concerned, Paulo Costa and Marvin Vettori are set to share the Octagon on Oct. 23.

“In the future, you might not see Manny Pacquiao again fight in the ring.”

For the first time in his storied career, Manny Pacquiao is talking about retirement. On Saturday, boxing’s first and only eight-division world champion lost via unanimous decision against late replacement opponent Yordenis Ugas.

During the post-fight press conference, the 42-year-old “Pacman” broached the idea of possibly calling it a career after 26 years of professional competition.

In the future, you might not see Manny Pacquiao again fight in the ring. I don’t know. But for how many decades, I’m happy with what I’ve done in boxing. I contributed a record and brought boxing to the top, and especially, brought honor to my country, the Filipino people.

Whether there’s a purse or not, in my heart, I want to fight. I want to continue fighting. But the thing is, I also have to consider my body. I have to consider my work (as a politician) back in my country.

There are a lot of things I need to accomplish and to help people. And I want to be an inspiration to all the people.

Pacquiao was seemingly unable to inflict significant damage on Ugas, who efficiently utilized his jab to mount his offense. But according to the Filipino boxing icon, his legs were giving him trouble.

I’m not saying this is my excuse, but both of my legs were cramping. That’s why I could not move around. In the early days (of my career), I could easily move and outbox him. But this time around, it was like my two legs were tight and hurting me in the second round until the 12th round.

My mind and my heart were 100%, but my legs were cramping.

That’s boxing. I’ve done a lot in boxing and I’m happy that we’re (both) safe.

Pacquiao later said his cramps were likely because he overworked himself, while also acknowledging that age could be a factor.

Too much hard work, training. I ran in the mountains and did 32 rounds (in the gym) every day. I don’t know. But we’re not young anymore.

If this is indeed Pacquiao’s final ring appearance, he would end his career with a record of 62-8-2. 39 of those wins ended by knockout.

Kelvin Gastelum has given his reaction to suffering a loss to Jared Cannonier at UFC Vegas 34.

Gastelum and Cannonier shared the Octagon this past Saturday night (Aug. 21). The action was held inside the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The middleweight clash went the distance and was Cannonier was awarded the unanimous decision victory.

Gastelum hopped on his Twitter account to express his belief that he should’ve had his hand raised.

“I think I won but whatever. Congratulations to Jared Cannonier on a very competitive fight! Small adjustments and we’re back on top! Tonight just proved that! We’re very close to being the best in the world. Almost there & on to the next one!”

With the loss, Kelvin Gastelum has now gone 1-5 in his last six outings. In his rough stretch, he’s lost to current UFC Middleweight Champion Israel Adesanya, Darren Till, Jack Hermansson, Robert Whittaker, and now Cannonier.

As for Cannonier, he has bounced back from a unanimous decision loss to Robert Whittaker. Cannonier is 4-1 in his last five outings. Cannonier was the number three-ranked UFC middleweight going into the bout and he’s likely to maintain his position with the win over the ninth-ranked Gastelum.

Also featured on the main card of UFC Vegas 34 was a battle between Mark Madsen and Clay Guida. Madsen won the fight via split decision. Parker Porter defeated Chase Sherman via unanimous decision, Saidyokub Kakhramonov pulled off a hail mary guillotine choke finish over Trevin Giles, and Vinc Pichel bested Austin Hubbard via unanimous decision.

A bout with title implications was also held at UFC Vegas 34. Alexandre Pantoja took on Brandon Royval in a bout to determine the number one contender for Brandon Moreno’s UFC Flyweight Championship. Pantoja won the fight via second-round submission courtesy of a rear-naked choke.
