Something needs to be done about the judging in MMA

It’s been a really bad year for controversial judging in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and at UFC 132 that trend has continued.

Matt Wiman and Dennis Siver met in the Octagon this evening with both fighters looking for a decisive win to move themselves up the lightweight ladder.

At the end of the fight, fans everywhere thought that Wiman had earned that decisive victory, but it was not to be.

The first round of the fight was very close. The stand up was fairly even, but a slight edge could be given to Dennis. Wiman worked very hard to take Siver down, but had a lot of trouble doing so. Matt did manage a takedown at the end of first and many thought that may have been enough for him to steal the round.

The second round was all Matt Wiman. He took Siver down and exposed the German fighters guard. Dennis looked relatively lost on his back, failing to control Wiman’s posture much of the time. Matt landed some huge ground and pound in this round and cut up Siver’s forehead badly.

The third round was close again, but Wiman looked like he should have taken it. Matt was the more aggressive fighter in the third round, constantly moving forward and looking for takedowns. Wiman spent more of the third round in an offensive position than Siver did and Matt also secured a guillotine choke at one point.

Overall, Siver spent a lot of this fight pressed up against the cage, not doing much. It was clear that Dennis didn’t want a grappling match, but his lack of footwork allowed Wiman to instigate the clinch often.

The Area exploded with boos when it was announced that Dennis Siver had won the fight via unanimous decision; it was clear they believed that Matt won the fight.

It’s unfortunate that Wiman lost the fight in such a manner, but don’t feel too bad for him. In the case of controversial decisions like this, Dana White is known to give fighters their win bonus anyways and decide on their next fight as if they had won.

UFC 132 Fight Card: Does a Win Put Wanderlei Silva into the Title Picture?

Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva and Chris “The Crippler” Leben will meet at UFC 132 in what is arguably the most anticipated fight of 2011, so far.

Wanderlei and Chris are two of the most beloved brawlers in UFC history and fans are practically foaming at the mouth waiting for these two combatants to sling leather.

However, fans seem to be so enthralled by the potential for fireworks, that no one is talking about what’s at stake.

Silva has had a long and storied career and been in countless wars.

While we all appreciate the shows the Axe Murderer has put on for us, the effects that those battles have had on his body are starting to become apparent as his legendary career nears it’s end.

If Wanderlei wants to make one last run at a UFC title, now is the time for him to do it.

So, will a win over Chris Leben put Wanderlei Silva into the title picture in the middleweight division?

Well, before we get to Leben, let’s looks at Silva’s record since returning to the UFC since returning to the promotion in 2007.

The Axe Murderer is an unimpressive 2-3 since coming back to MMA‘s most prominent organization and has fought only once, thus far, in the middleweight division.

The one time Silva has competed in the UFC’s middleweight division, he earned a hard fought unanimous decision victory over Michael Bisping.

A win over The Crippler would put Wanderlei on a two fight win streak against, with those two victories coming over well known opponents. Given the relatively weak state of the middleweight division right now, that should be enough to put him into title contention.

If Wanderlei topples Leben, you can expect to see him facing off against Mark Munoz or Brian Stann next, in what will probably be a title eliminator fight.

UFC 132 is an absolutely stacked card, but perhaps the most anticipated match up of the night is Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva vs Chris “The Crippler” Leben.

Both fighters are known as brawlers and have reputations for never taking a step back.

No matter who loses this fight, the fans win.

That said, these competitors are both in need of a win.

Leben was made into a stepping stone in his last fight with Brian Stann. Coming off of that brutal knock out loss, Chris needs a big win, otherwise he risks losing relevance in the middleweight division.

Wanderlei has been out of action for over a year. His career is nearing its end and if he wants to make one last run at a title, he can’t afford to be losing any fights.

Let’s see how these two stack up.

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will be defending his belt for the seventh time in a row against Nick Diaz at UFC 137.

This is a very high pressure fight for Georges because he is coming off a couple lackluster performances.

In particular, GSP received a lot of criticism after his bout with Jake Shields. St-Pierre lost rounds on the judges scorecards for the first time since facing Josh Koscheck in 2007.

Indeed, it’s been some time since the fans have been totally satisfied with Georges’ efforts inside the Octagon, and the champ needs to bounce back or risk losing fans.

GSP needs to not only dominate Nick Diaz at UFC 137, but he needs a finish.

Here’s why…

Nate Marquardt was forced to withdraw from his main event bout with Rick Story this past Sunday.

Today it was revealed that the reason Nate had to be scratched from the card because he had been undergoing testosterone replacement therapy and was unable to get his testosterone levels down in time for the fight.

This isn’t the first time this sort of thing has happened; Chael Sonnen found himself in a similar situation in 2010 when he fought Anderson Silva. Sonnen was undergoing the same therapy before his title fight and was later suspended due to his failure to inform the Athletic Commission on the matter.

Former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion BJ Penn took to Twitter earlier today to voice his thoughts fighters using low testosterone levels as a reason for taking PEDs. According to fightofthenight.com, Penn did not mince words when addressing the issue: his stance is very clear.

“All this testosterone replacement therapy stuff is total BS,” Penn wrote. “A true martial artist would never consider cheating! Fighter on roids = blue collar crime. Coaches of fighters on roid = white collar crime.

“Everyone has to come together and get this ‘ped’ cancer out of our sport! If you can’t do it of carbs , fats, protein and vitamins and minerals you’re weak!”
