Chael Sonnen Calls Thiago Alves a "Boob" for Getting Submitted

Thiago Alves’ third-round submission loss to Martin Kampmann has drawn interest from UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen, who had some interesting words for the Brazilian striker on the post-fight show on Fuel TV for UFC on FX 2: Alves vs. Kampmann.

There is nobody else more surprised that [Alves] tapped out, more than Martin Kampmann. I think Martin will tell you himself. He didn’t have that choke. You have to be a real boob to get caught at the end of the fight like that.

Alves, who had been sluggish and out of shape in recent bouts, appeared to have returned to form against Kampmann.

After out-pointing the Dane on the feet throughout the entire bout, Alves dove in for a late takedown in the final minute, which Kampmann quickly countered with a guillotine choke that forced the tap with only 53 seconds left in the third round.

It was definitely a tough loss for Alves, who was looking to bounce back from a string of inconsistent performances and reinsert himself into the title picture.

As for Sonnen, it’s interesting that he of all people would go after another fighter for getting caught in a submission. In 11 total losses, Sonnen was submitted in eight of those bouts. Half of those submission losses came by triangle choke.

In comparison to Alves’ situation, Sonnen was also a victim of last-minute drama in his August 2010 championship bout against Anderson Silva. After dominating every round, Sonnen was submitted with a triangle choke with less than two minutes left in the fifth round.

10 MMA Fighters Who Should Have Taken Their Careers More Seriously

Despite working their entire lives to achieve a dream that has denied countless others, fighters oftentimes forget that being a professional athlete is a blessing in itself.

It doesn’t matter whether they’ve fought in the UFC, Pride, Strikeforce, WEC, Dream or Bellator. There are very few human beings on this planet blessed with the ability to do the things that these guys can do.

In every gym strewn across the world, there are dreams waiting to be achieved or denied. There is also natural talent that will make it to the big show but will never reach its full potential.

Ralph Marston, author and publisher of The Daily Motivator, once said, “There are plenty of difficult obstacles in your path. Don’t allow yourself to become one of them.”

In any sport, talent can only take a person so far. They need the drive, hunger and motivation to succeed.

MMA is known for its grueling training regimen and dieting, which sometimes takes a toll on even the most disciplined of athletes. Still, these are things a fighter has to endure if he or she ever hopes to reach their full potential.

Here are 10 fighters who should have taken their careers more seriously.

The ladies of MMA will no longer be ignored.

“Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey” represented a resurgence of women’s MMA in the form of a dramatic championship main event and a preliminary bout that should be an early candidate for fight of the year.

With Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos and Gina Carano out of the picture, Ronda Rousey came out of nowhere to claim the Strikeforce bantamweight title from Miesha Tate and begin her reign as the face of women’s MMA.

Former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson promised his bout with K.J. Noons would prove he was more deserving of the main-event attention, but the only thing Thomson and Noons proved was their co-main event slot should’ve been given to Sarah Kaufman and Alexis Davis.

Both women put on a memorable bout that should trump Carano’s fight with Julie Kedzie as the Forrest Griffin versus Stephan Bonnar of women’s MMA.

Some continue to snub their noses at the ladies, but for fans of women’s MMA, there is plenty to be excited about in the near future.

Without further ado, here are Bleacher Report’s official women’s MMA pound-for-pound rankings.

These rankings are the combined efforts of some of Bleacher Report’s best MMA writers, as we continue to try and provide you with the best content on the web.

Careers Ruined by ‘The Curse of Georges St-Pierre’

A loss to Georges St-Pierre is just a missed opportunity to capture a world title for some, but for others, a loss to the UFC champ forebodes an uncertain MMA future full of letdown and disappointment.

In sports, this phenomenon is generally referred to as a “curse”.

Professional football has the “Madden Curse,” which was created by fans of EA Sports’ blockbuster video game franchise. Certain NFL players featured on the cover of the game suffered unfortunate luck over the course of that particular season with injuries and a major decline in performance.

In baseball, there was the “Curse of the Bambino.”

After selling “The Great Bambino”, Babe Ruth, to the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox, one of the most successful baseball franchises, underwent an 86-year championship drought.

Now, MMA joins the bunch with a superstition involving the UFC welterweight champion.

Fighters aren’t quite the same after losing to St-Pierre. Legends are forced to contemplate retirement, and other world class fighters find themselves fighting for a job instead of a world title.

Here’s a closer look at the careers ruined by “The Curse of Georges St-Pierre.”

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is set to make history at the Allphones Arena in Sydney, Australia with a UFC on FX 2 fight card that features the UFC debut of the flyweight division.

The card is headlined by a welterweight showdown between Thiago “The Pitbull” Alves and Martin “Hitman” Kampmann.

These two 170-pound fighters have the ability to put on a fireworks display that would make a New Year’s Day celebration look like sparklers at a Little League Baseball game.

Despite being forgotten by most fans, Alves and Kampmann are still very much in the title picture. A victory could easily put either fighter another win or two away from a shot at UFC gold.

Before the welterweights do battle, the UFC kicks off its inaugural flyweight tournament to crown the first-ever UFC flyweight champion.

Fans get to see a pair of exciting semifinal bouts that feature former UFC title contender Demetrious Johnson against Tachi Palace flyweight champ Ian McCall and former WEC title contender Joseph Benavidez vs. Shooto bantamweight champion Yasuhiro Urushitani.

These predictions include Bleacher Report Featured Columnists John Heinis, Dale De Souza, Dan Hiergesell, Nedu Obi and myself, Jordy McElroy.

The time has come once again for you to feast on some manly induced knowledge in preparation for the upcoming fights. Snatch a cold beverage out the fridge and get comfortable. It’s prediction time.
