UFC 134 was, for all intents and purposes, a perfect night for the sport of mixed martial arts. The fans in the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro were boisterous and passionate, which made the show feel like an even bigger deal than it already was.

As for the show, it was one of the best events of the year. There were great fights and exciting finishes to be found up and down the card.

Saturday night was a monumental night for UFC because it was their first foray into Brazil since 1998, and given the way the country reacted to this show, it will not be that long before they make a return trip.

With that in mind, here are the three best moments from UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro.

3. Erick Silva’s Lightning Quick KO of Luis Ramos

Erick Silva and Luis Ramos entered UFC 134 largely unknown to most people watching the event, but in Brazil these two men are superstars. Both have been champions for rival promotions in the country and the crowd was on the edge of their seats when the fight started.

The crowd didn’t have time to get comfortable in their seats because Silva knocked Ramos down in about 30 seconds and shortly after that the fight was over.

2. Rousimar Palhares and Dan Miller Fight

This was a one-sided affair that Palhares dominated from start to finish, but Miller did not give in at any point. Miller’s left eye was covered in blood and the referee nearly stopped the fight at the end of the second round.

But Miller came out in the third round and gave Palhares everything he had for the final five minutes. Palhares was gassed in the third round and seemed shocked that Miller was still standing. The two men hugged after the fight as a show of respect for the war that they had just put their bodies through.

1. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Is Back

“Big Nog” had not fought since a lopsided loss to Cain Velasquez at UFC 110 in February 2010 because of a series of injuries that have been lingering for far longer than you would think.

But those setbacks did not prevent Nogueira from scoring his first knockout victory since 2005. He worked so hard to be able to compete on this show because it could be his last major fight on Brazilian soil.

He left the fans in attendance and watching around the world with a memory that they will never forget.

There are moments in sports that will stick with you forever. UFC 134 featured one of those moments when Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira knocked out Brendan Schaub three minutes into the first round.

Fighting in front of a partisan hometown crowd, Nogueira made his return to the octagon following an 18 month layoff due to a series of nagging injuries that seemed like they would never heal, and he left the crowd in attendance and everyone watching around the world with a moment that they will never forget.

“Minotauro” will go down in history as one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time. And he is unquestionably the greatest submission fighter of his generation. But he had a lot of questions that he had to answer against Schaub and he was able to do that.

It is no secret that Nogueira’s days in mixed martial arts are numbered. At age 36 and with 41 professional fights under his belt, his body has taken a pounding and he has become a shell of his former self.

But he came into this fight in the best shape that he has been in in years, which is remarkable considering that he said he ended his rehab early to train for this fight, and ended up knocking out one of the rising stars in the heavyweight division.

This victory by Nogueira will stand alongside Tito Ortiz’ submission win over Ryan Bader at UFC 132 as the most surprising result from 2011, but what made this victory special was the crowd.

Everyone in the HSBC Arena treated Nogueira like a returning hero and wanted to see him win so badly that when the referee stopped the fight, the emotion came pouring out of every fan in the arena and Nogueira was clearly overwhelmed by it.

Defining a perfect moment is impossible because “perfection” means many things to many different people, but Nogueira’s victory over Schaub was, for all intents and purposes, as close to a perfect moment as you can get in sports.

UFC 134 Results: Mauricio Rua Avenges Loss to Forrest Griffin in Grand Fashion

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua proved why he is one of the most dangerous fighters in the world at UFC 134 by dominating Forrest Griffin en route to scoring a first round knockout.

Following Rua’s devastating loss to Jon Jones earlier this year, his career could have gone in one of two ways: It could have ruined him for the rest of his career or served as motivation to get better to earn another title shot.

Given the way that he dismantled Griffin on Saturday night, it is clear that Rua followed the latter path. The win was extra sweet for Rua, who lost to Griffin at UFC 76 when he made his debut with the promotion following the Zuffa acquisition of PRIDE.

In that fight, Griffin scored a submission victory late in the third round and he was able to parlay that victory into a light heavyweight title shot against Quinton Jackson, a fight which Griffin would go on to win.

On the UFC Countdown special that aired on Spike TV this week, Rua said that he wasn’t mentally prepared for that first fight and took it lightly.

There was no doubt that he was prepared to fight this time around, and those nagging injuries that kept him out of action for 10 months between May 2010 and March 2011 are completely healthy now.

Rua made Griffin, who is still a top 10 light heavyweight, look like a sparring partner. He connected with a right hand that sent Griffin down to the mat and Rua pounced on him right away with hammer fists. Griffin was on Dream Street after the fourth one and the referee called a stop to the fight.

It was a huge victory for Rua, who needed the win to stay close to title contention – though he will likely need to win at least one more fight before he earns a shot – and he was able to avenge his first loss as a UFC fighter in the process.

UFC 134 Results: Anderson Silva Shows Why He Is Greatest of All Time

If there was any doubt that Anderson Silva was the toughest fighter to ever step in the UFC ring, he made sure that doubt was gone when he beat down Yushin Okami during UFC 134.

UFC 134 was the first fight in Brazil for the UFC in 13 years, and Silva returned to his homeland with a bang, knocking Okami out in the second round with a barrage of punches to the head and body.

Okami was standing with Silva for most of the fight, but it was hard to tell if he was as good as him or if Silva was toying with him.

One knockout later, he was just toying with him.

Silva told ESPN after the fight about his mentality entering the battle:

I’m training hard; I’m training hard for my team. I came here to fight. I train hard for the best guys in the world. I pushed the fight.

To say that he pushed the fight would be an understatement, and Silva made Okami abandon the strategy that he had been working on for months in a matter of minutes.

That is the beauty of Silva.

When anyone fights Silva for his title, that fighter prepares for months in every way that he can to try to take the Brazilian champion down, but unlike any fighter I ever saw before, Silva will spends the first round studying the opposition and the second round exploiting the weaknesses he finds.

It has now been almost five years since Silva won the UFC Middleweight title, and with the lack of competition that can stand with Silva, I don’t see Silva losing the belt unless he moved weight classes.

UFC 134 Results: Anderson Silva’s Mind Is Difference Maker vs Yushin Okami

Anderson Silva gets called many things by many people, but he does not get enough credit for being one of the smartest fighters in the sport of mixed martial arts.

At UFC 134, Silva proved that his mind is just as important in the way that he fights as his speed, quickness and precise striking ability.

Yushin Okami’s only chance to defeat Silva was by taking the fight to the ground and wrestling him for five rounds. Everyone knew that, including Silva, and he was avoiding the ground like the plague.

There was one moment in the second round where Silva connected with Okami’s chin and Okami fell to the canvas. But the shot was clearly not strong enough to knock Okami out, nor was it enough to faze him. Okami was trying to bait Silva into attacking him on the ground so that he could get him on the ground.

Silva, understanding the situation and knowing that he makes a living in the stand up position, let Okami get back to his feet. About 30 seconds after Okami was stood back up, Silva rocked him with a shot again and Okami went back down. This time, though, Silva knew that he had Okami right where he wanted him and he pounced on the challenger.

The reason that Silva was able to beat Okami, and every other fighter that he has gone against in UFC, is because he knows when to attack and when to let his opponent come to him. He knows when to move in and when to back away.

The brilliance of Anderson Silva does not come from all the spectacular knockouts and submissions that he gets, rather it comes from his ability to know when he has to attack and when he has to step back.

That comes from discipline and understanding what it means to be a championship fighter. In short, Silva is smarter than every other fighter in mixed martial arts today, and he proved that again at UFC 134.

For an event that showcased the Brazilians in front of their countrymen, UFC 134 on Saturday was sure to be a dramatic affair.

Highlighted by the main event of Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami, Saturday’s fight card was one to behold, complete with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira’s comeback from multiple surgeries.

Here are the top three inspiring performances of UFC 134, interestingly enough all by the Brazilians.

1. Anderson Silva

How can you not put Silva here? With his performance against Okami on Saturday, a second-round TKO, he not only was the best fighter in the Octagon at UFC 134, he proved he’s the greatest fighter in UFC history. Silva calmly controlled the fight against the challenger on Saturday, then exacted his dominance in the second round. He defended his middleweight a UFC-record ninth straight time and won a UFC -record 14th straight fight. When Silva is this good, you wonder if his brilliance will ever be challenged again.

2. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

I admit. I was wrong about Nogueira. Coming off an 18-month layoff, and surgeries to his hip and both knees, Nogueira showed the form that has made him a legend in the UFC. Against a younger Brendan Schaub, he forgot all about his last two defeats and promptly set Schaub down in the first round. It was a great thing to see, in front of his adoring countrymen, and it proved Nogueira still has something left to give after a troublesome year and a half.

3. Mauricio Rua

Rua came into his fight against Forrest Griffin with the Rio de Janeiro crowd behind him, and left the Octagon with the crowd roaring. Rua took advantage of Griffin’s aggressiveness in the fight early, landing a vicious right as Griffin moved in, then proceeded to pummel him on the mat before the ref called the fight at 1:53 in the first round. Rua, known as the more aggressive fighter coming into the matchup, was the fighter with more poise on Saturday, and that was the difference in the outcome.

If you watched just one of these fights, you were happy. If you watched all three, you were in bliss.

UFC 134 certainly did not disappoint.
