Thiago Alves looked refreshed against UFC newcomer Papy Abedi, taking a first-round rear-naked choke win for only his second victory in his last five fights.

The former welterweight title challenger showed amazing ground-and-pound technique, which set up the submission, the first in his MMA career (unless you count his submission victory via punches over Jason Chambers in November 2004) and is looking to move up the welterweight ladder once again.

A lot of talk has gone on for this division, especially regarding matchups for the top contenders, and Alves showed that he deserves to be in that talk with his performance at UFC 138.

Here are five fighters that Alves could take on next.

After Chael Sonnen defeated Brian Stann at UFC 136, he made it perfectly clear who he wanted to face next.

It felt like a WWE storyline the way it was presented, but Sonnen wants to prove any doubters wrong by defeating Anderson Silva and winning the UFC middleweight championship.

“The biggest rematch in the history of the business, I’m calling you out Silva but we’re upping the stakes.  I beat you, you leave the division.  You beat me, I will leave the UFC forever.” Sonnen said in the Octagon following his win.

This was the talk of the UFC world and still is, so will this fight happen?  It is definitely a fight to look forward to in 2012, but there are more, so let’s take a look, starting with the one just talked about here.

There is plenty of depth nowadays in each of the weight divisions.  Developing fighters over the years through smaller organizations and even through The Ultimate Fighter TV series, we see plenty of talent come through and have much hype going into bigger fights.

There are those, however, who don’t usually live up to the hype.  For all the talk about these fighters, they clearly have holes in their game and though they have the ability to pull out wins at times, the fights themselves don’t usually get talked about, other than how disappointing the fight was.

Here are the most overrated fighters in MMA, one for each division.

Every time Joe Lauzon steps into the Octagon, he is assured to give his absolute best, win or lose.

At UFC 136, Lauzon earned his sixth straight fight night bonus for “Submission of the Night” against Melvin Guillard. He submitted the dangerous Guillard with a rear-naked choke 47 seconds into the fight, and Lauzon climbs the lightweight ladder once again.

The question is, that for all of Lauzon’s work, is he being over looked?

Sure, in those seven straight “Fight Night” bonuses, Lauzon lost two of the fights, but he showed the heart of a warrior in each of those bouts.

The Season 5 Ultimate Fighter alumnus hasn’t main-evented a card since February 2009, but now that the Frankie Edgar-Gray Maynard situation has been resolved for the time being, is this the time to make a title push for the former computer science major?

He is on a two-fight winning streak and things are looking up for this lightweight. Lauzon could have the skill to face a top 10 fighter in the division.

We have been so concentrated on the Edgar-Maynard situation that we largely neglected all other  happenings in the division. Who is the No. 1 contender? What’s the next matchup?

If it is anyone other than a rematch, you can definitely add Alex Curik’s cat out for a stroll on championship glory.

Has Lauzon stumbled upon his secret to play in a championship?

What do you think?
