Miesha Tate put on a great show on Friday night, solidifying her position as one of the toughest women in mixed martial arts by defeating Hitomi Akano and Maiju Kujala, and wasting no time in starting to build her next fight by calling out the Strikeforce 135-pound champion, Sarah Kaufman.

The bad news is that Strikeforce has already announced that Kaufman’s next fight will come against Marloes Coenen, not Tate.

The good news is that there’s a simple solution to that problem: Strikeforce needs to reverse course and book Tate vs. Kaufman right away.

With his relentless, months-long trash talk, Chael Sonnen did more to promote his UFC 117 fight with Anderson Silva than any fighter has ever done to promote any pay-per-view bout.

But Sonnen didn’t get a nickel for it.

In an interview on HDNet’s Fighting Words with Mike Straka, Sonnen said that his UFC contract doesn’t include pay-per-view bonuses, and he’s fine with that: He wasn’t promoting his fight to make money for himself, he was doing it to make money for the UFC.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia earned his most significant victory in almost three years Saturday night, defeating Paul Buentello on the War on the Mainland card in Irvine, California.

In the first round Sylvia was getting the better of the punching exchanges and forcing Buentello into corners, where Buentello would tie Sylvia up. Buentello’s tendency to hold onto Sylvia led referee Big John McCarthy to separate the fighters on three different occasions in the first round, a round that Sylvia definitely won.

In his long mixed martial arts career, Randy Couture has never finished a fight with a triangle choke. But his son, Ryan Couture, used a triangle to win his professional MMA debut on Friday night, submitting Lucas Stark at the Strikeforce Challengers show in Arizona.

“That’s my favorite, for sure,” Couture said of the triangle, noting that his father doesn’t use the move because “he doesn’t spend much time on his back.”
