Benson Henderson defeated Frankie Edgar at UFC 150 to retain his lightweight belt, and now that he’s beaten the former champ twice, it’s time to start looking around for his next fight.

The fight went the distance and was close with Henderson squeaking out a victory by split decision. It was easily one of the more exciting fights this year.

So what’s next for the lightweight champ?

Here are some of the top contenders in Henderson’s weight class that could give him a run for his money in the Octagon.

Frankie Edgar

With two close fights going to decision, Edgar is clearly a worthy competitor for Henderson, but he won’t get another shot this soon.

However, Edgar is still in a special class of fighters in his division, and he has the ability to ascend to the top again.

Look for Edgar to be right back in the title hunt within a year, and as long as Henderson holds on to the belt, look for a third installment of the main event at UFC 150.

Nate Diaz

Diaz is on a hot streak, having won his last three fights all by a pretty convincing margin.

After making quick work of Takanori Gomi by submission in the first round, Diaz moved on to fight Donald Cerrone in a match that went the distance. But it wasn’t as close as a decision would dictate, and Diaz picked up the unanimous victory.

His most impressive win came against Jim Miller, as Diaz was the first fighter to stop Miller in his career.

What’s more intriguing is that Miller was able to go the distance with Henderson last year while Diaz was able to stop Miller early. From that standpoint alone, Diaz seems like a worthy competitor and most likely will get the first crack at Henderson.

Anthony Pettis

Pettis has already accomplished what no man in the UFC has yet: He beat Henderson. The fight happened in December of 2010 with Pettis grabbing the unanimous decision.

That in itself makes it absolutely necessary that these two square off once again. However, Pettis did have surgery earlier in the year, but he could be ready to go by the end of the summer.

It looks like Pettis might have a match upcoming with Donald Cerrone when he returns, but that’s just the type of fight Pettis needs to warm-up for a potential title match sometime down the road.

Regardless, keep an eye on Pettis as he makes the case for a crack at the belt.

Gray Maynard

Maynard had two cracks at the lightweight belt when Edgar was the champ—one result was a draw, the other saw Maynard get stopped in the third round.

But such close contests with the former champ makes it likely that Maynard will be considered for another title shot sometime down the road, if not now.

He recently beat Clay Guida by a split decision and has an impressive 11-1-1 career record with the loss and the draw both coming against a champion.

Maynard has already proven he can hang with the best, and if he was able to go the distance with Edgar, he could very well do the same against Henderson.

Gilbert Melendez

Also considered one of the best lightweights on the planet, Melendez is currently in Strikeforce and doesn’t appear to be leaving anytime soon.

So that leaves one option if you want to see Melendez in the Octagon: Kidnap him.

In all seriousness, Melendez and Henderson would be an epic showdown between two undisputed champs, easily making it the fight of the year in many circles.

Melendez has won his last seven fights and it’s clear he is the class of his weight division in Strikeforce. With few opponents left to fight, it’s time to make Melendez-Henderson a reality.

Wishful thinking, I know.

UFC 147: Why Wanderlei Silva Must Retire After Loss to Rich Franklin

A rematch from UFC 99, Rich Franklin versus Wanderlei Silva headlined UFC 147. It was an exciting match that left fans realizing Silva’s time might be coming to an end in MMA.

Their last fight went to the scorecards, with Franklin coming out victorious. Instead of being able to learn from his mistakes and hold the fate of this fight in his own hands, Silva once again let the judges decide.

And once again it didn’t work out for him.

Silva rocked Franklin toward the end of the second round and almost had the former champion beat, but Franklin would ride out the storm the remainder of the round and survived the onslaught.

That would be the last time Silva would control this bout.

Franklin would slowly climb back into the fight and began scoring points with solid strikes and a few key take downs. It was Franklin’s pace that was the difference in this fight as a clearly gassed Silva had used all his energy trying to knock Franklin out in the second round.

Silva would make one last-ditch effort to save the fight, but to no avail. Franklin took the victory and thus begins his march back to the front of the middleweight division for one final title run.

The loss for Silva was a harsh reminder that he will never be the fighter he once was. Silva didn’t have much gas in the tank to begin with and was outworked by Franklin in nearly ever round. Franklin was the quicker fighter and easily controlled the pace of this fight.

Once Silva exerted all his energy into whiffing at a knockout against Franklin, “The Axe Murderer” slowed down considerably and proved he is but a one-trick pony. From there on, the once-vibrant Silva changed from hopeful to hopeless all in the span of a round.

Even before his second-round exploits, Silva wasn’t moving well. The near knockout only made it worse. He looked old and slow for the rest of the fight, making it easy for Franklin to score points and take the decision.

Silva is now 2-4 in his last six fights and doesn’t have a very promising future ahead of him. This loss will undoubtedly send him back to the bottom of the barrel in the division and dash any career-ending title hopes he might have had.

At this point, The Axe Murderer doesn’t have much reason left to fight other than money. There is nothing left to realistically accomplish, nor is there anything to prove.

Silva has defeated some of the greatest fighters ever to step into an MMA ring. He is a first-ballot Hall of Famer in the UFC as well as any other fighting organization he has been in.

The last thing his fans want to see is for their favorite fighter to get his brains beat in over and over again. Losing to Rich Franklin isn’t exactly something to be proud of since Franklin is at the tail end of his career as well.

Silva is no more than a measuring stick for new fighters coming into the UFC and that is a far cry from what the former champion used to be. It’s time to go out with dignity.

What better time than now for The Axe Murderer?

Junior dos Santos vs. Frank Mir: Cigano Proves Mir Can’t Compete for a Title

Junior dos Santos made relatively quick work of Frank Mir in UFC 146 to retain the UFC heavyweight championship and sealed the deal that Mir will never compete for a title again.

In the second round of their fight, dos Santos landed a straight right hand that leveled Mir and sent him rolling backwards. Mir attempted to get up, but fell back having clearly been rocked too hard to come back from.

Cigano dominated most of the fight and never gave Mir a chance to fight in his comfort zone. Instead, dos Santos kept it a boxing match and was simply too much for Mir as evidenced by the second-round finish.

Mir made a few attempts to take this fight to the ground, but all efforts were thwarted by the champ.

The former heavyweight champ has had some great matches throughout his career and many accomplishments to be proud of.

That being said, it doesn’t appear that there is much left in the tank for Mir.

Cigano is the class of the division and if Mir wants to return to glory, he’ll have to get through that caliber of fighter. However, Mir never stood a chance against dos Santos, further proving he is no longer on an elite level.

So, what’s next for Mir?

It’s doubtful he’ll be dropped off the face of the UFC earth. Mir still has value to the company as a legend, fan favorite and a top-notch measuring stick for new fighters coming into the company.

Although this will be the last you see of Mir in a truly meaningful fight, it won’t be the last you see of Mir for good.
