Andre Pederneiras: Jose Aldo Will Only Move to Lightweight for Title Shot

UFC 142 answered many questions surrounding Jose Aldo’s pound-for-pound status, but his thoughts on moving up another weight class have yet to be revealed.

Since entering the UFC last year, Aldo has reigned among the featherweight division and dominated every opponent in front of him. Like most world-class champions, Aldo’s talent is evidently superior to the rest of his opposition, and perhaps a change of scenery would be more beneficial to the 25-year-old Brazilian.

However, Aldo’s coach and head trainer of Nova Uniao, Andre Pederneiras, doesn’t believe the time is right for the UFC featherweight champion to step up to 155 pounds.

“It won’t happen for now, unless he goes straight for a title shot,” Pederneiras told Sherdog.com

During the UFC 142 post-fight press conference, UFC President Dana White appeared to be open to the idea of seeing Aldo challenge for the UFC lightweight title in the future. However, White said he will let Aldo and his camp make the final decision.

“I would have no problem with him staying at his weight now and defending his title there or moving to 155 pounds, whatever he feels like he wants to do,” White said.

Aldo’s stunning knockout of Chad Mendes left the NCAA Division 1 wrestler crumpled on the canvas, and it also left the state of the division in limbo, as some critics felt Mendes was one of the few fighters who could potentially present problems to Aldo with his speed and wrestling ability.

But his victory was not to be outdone, as Aldo sprinted into the crowd to celebrate with those in attendance at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Pederneiras said it was something he expected out of the champion.

“I expected him to do something stupid, especially here,” he joked. “He did [the same thing] in San Diego and he had to hear a lot from the commission staff. But here, with all that crowd, I knew.”

Vitor Belfort on Wanderlei Silva: If He Trades With Me, I’ll Break Him Again

After earning a dramatic win over Anthony Johnson last weekend at UFC 142, Vitor Belfort has now turned his attention to Wanderlei Silva.

Belfort and Silva will serve as opposing coaches on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil and will meet in the finale shortly after. It will have been 13 years since their first encounter took place, where Belfort obliterated Silva with strikes in the opening round.

As he prepares to meet “The Axe Murderer” in an anticipated rematch, Belfort told OGlobo.com (translated by Tom Mendes of BloodyElbow.com) that while he expects a tough bout with Silva, it wouldn’t be wise for the former Pride champion to try and strike with him.

“If he does that (trade with me) I’ll break him again. He no longer has the chin to trade with me,” Belfort said. “Tell him to change strategies or it’s going to be another knockout.”

Belfort’s recent win over Johnson has now given “The Phenom” seven wins in his last eight fights. With a win over Silva, he’ll be on a three-fight win streak and possibly in prime position for a title shot.

Meanwhile, Silva is coming off a critical victory against UFC newcomer Cung Le at UFC 139 that saw the Brazilian record his first victory in nearly two years since beating Michael Bisping at UFC 110 in February 2010.

After undergoing successful knee surgery, Georges St-Pierre will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon later this year.

The UFC welterweight champion, who is currently rehabilitating an ACL tear he suffered in training, is eager to step back into the cage and defend the welterweight title as soon as possible.

St-Pierre made a guest appearance on HD Net’s Inside MMA to discuss the extent of his injury and his recovery status. St-Pierre said he returned to training too soon from a previous injury, which contributed to him tearing his ACL.

“I didn’t listen to myself,” St-Pierre said. “I had a first injury to my left knee. I tried to come back too fast and I was compensating with my other leg. That’s how I hurt myself.”

Despite being out of action, the Saint Isadore, Quebec native will be paying close attention to the upcoming interim welterweight title bout between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit at UFC 143. St-Pierre, who was originally scheduled to meet Diaz in the main event, is slated to meet the winner of the bout.

Although St-Pierre previously favoured Condit over Diaz, the champion is anticipating a future matchup with the former Strikeforce welterweight champion.

“I just hope the best man will win. But if the best man is Nick Diaz, I will appreciate it more, because it will be a better build up for a fight,” he said.

Diaz’s post-fight comments at UFC 137 infuriated St-Pierre, which forced the champion to demand a bout with the Stockton, Calif. native over Condit.

If Diaz is able to get a victory at UFC 143, St-Pierre will finally get the fight he had hoped for, possibly setting up the highly anticipated title bout for November, when St-Pierre expects to return.

“Hard training will be in July, and fighting again for the timing to get back I would say in November, I can come back in November,” he said.

Jose Aldo‘s appearance at UFC 142 was well-received by fans who sold out the HSBC arena in Rio de Janeiro, but it was his post-fight celebration that will be remembered for many years to come.

Following the UFC featherweight champion’s decisive victory over Chad Mendes this past weekend, Aldo proceeded to rejoice with the fans in attendance as he was hoisted up on people’s shoulders and celebrated.

The Brazilian embraced the moment as the crowd began to chant in honour of his successful title defense.

“My fans give me so much love and so much energy so there’s nothing better than celebrating with them,” Aldo said in an exclusive post-fight interview on UFC.com.

Mendes served as one of the division’s best wrestlers, however his speed and wrestling credentials were no match for Aldo’s superior Muay Thai as Mendes desperately tried for multiple takedown attempts. As Aldo broke free of his opponent’s clinch, he countered and landed a knee on Mendes and followed up with some ground-and-pound to signal the end of the bout.

Aldo praised Mendes for his effort and his relentless approach.

“Mendes is a tough guy,” he said. “But thankfully I was able to do everything I trained to do and come out with a victory.”

A dream bout many fans would never expect to happen will now be a reality.

UFC welterweights Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit will meet in the main event at UFC 143 on Super Bowl weekend.

While current UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is sidelined with a knee injury, leaving the state of the division in limbo, Diaz and Condit will compete to determine an interim champion for the time being. It is expected the winner will meet St-Pierre in a title unification bout later this year.

Also on the card is another welterweight matchup involving Josh Koscheck and Mike Pyle, as well as a heavyweight bout between Roy Nelson and Fabricio Werdum, who will make his long-awaited return to the UFC after competing in Strikeforce.

UFC 143 is scheduled for February 4th, live from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Tito Ortiz Says He Would Fight Rampage Jackson for a Title Shot

Although Tito Ortiz may no longer be in title contention, he would consider a bout with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson if a victory led him to a potential title shot.

Ortiz and Jackson were former training partners prior to “Rampage” entering the UFC, and the two light heavyweights have remained good friends ever since.

Ortiz recently spoke with FighthubTV, and the former UFC light heavyweight champion said he and Jackson discussed a potential bout.

“We talked about it and if it was for a world title then we would,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz was involved in a similar situation with another former training partner in Chuck Liddell in 2003, where he tried avoid a bout with “The Iceman” at all costs. It would prove to backfire on Ortiz, as he had to face Liddell on two separate occasions, seemingly ending their friendship.

When asked about the possibility of standing across opposite of Jackson, Ortiz respectfully declined and said their friendship was more important.

“He had an upsetting loss against Jon Jones and I lost to Rashad (Evans). Maybe God made the path for us to not compete against each other,” he said. ” I’ve never really wanted to, he’s my boy, he’s my best friend.”
