Nearly three years have passed since the final event in World Extreme Cagefighting came and went.

WEC 53 featured electric fights, including Benson Henderson vs. Anthony “Showtime” Pettis, and sent the promotion out on as high a note as possible. Then again, every WEC event seemed to deliver a level of exhilaration and intrigue not found elsewhere (or at least not found so consistently).

Nearly three years since the UFC absorbed the WEC and its roster, we look back on the fights that defined the promotion. But since one fight would not suffice in summing up the WEC’s terrific run, we picked nine.

Here are the nine best fights in the history of the WEC.

UFC Fight Night 26 is in the books, and the highly anticipated card turned out to be a great debut for the promotion of Fox Sports 1 Saturday night in Boston.

In the main event of the evening, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was upset by Chael Sonnen after tapping out to a guillotine choke in the first round. A bit earlier, in the co-main event, Alistair Overeem was brutally knocked out by Travis Browne in one of the best comebacks in recent memory.

As with every UFC event, Twitter exploded with instant feedback. Here are a few of the best reactions for UFC Fight Night 26.

Former middleweight top contender Vitor Belfort doesn’t believe Sonnen should be calling out Wanderlei Silva. “The Phenom” claims to have a better idea, and honestly, that fight makes far more sense.

Plenty had Sonnen winning this fight, but I’m pretty sure not a single human being predicted first-round guillotine choke.

Brian Stann knows a thing or two about Sonnen‘s submission game.

May be a stretch, but Askren weighs in on Sonnen‘s post-fight speech.

Yeah, we were pretty shocked as well.

Fox Sports 1 launched on Saturday with the big event, and the UFC fighters certainly lived up to the hype.

NBA superstar Deron Williams didn’t weigh in on Sonnen, but he seems to think one Steven Siler deserves a title shot.

Is “The Reem” finished as an elite heavyweight? Can he contend for a title at some point in the future?

Is Overeem done in the UFC?

As much as the MMA community prefers knockouts, submissions and exciting fights, a strong point-fighting style is oftentimes a solid mean to an end.

Of course, fighting for a decision is sometimes described as “fighting not to lose,” or “just getting by.” And we’ve seen plenty of controversial decisions over the years in mixed martial arts—the product of close fights and (more often than not) poor judging.

But again, a decision win is a win nonetheless, and there are five fighters in the sport who know how to work the judges better than the rest. These are the five MMA fighters with the most judge-friendly styles in the sport.

The athletes included on this list are the ones who present the most effective point-fighting systems in MMA. The majority of these fighters go to decisions at a high rate, control and dictate their fights and neutralize the offense of their opponents.

UFC 163 is in the books, and the less-than-highly anticipated card turned out to be a strange one, thanks predominantly to a fourth-round shoulder injury to “The Korean Zombie” that led to a Jose Aldo stoppage win.

The co-main event was also a strange one, as Lyoto Machida was defeated by Phil Davis via unanimous decision. Only problem? Many felt Machida was robbed.

Plenty of individuals went to Twitter to make their opinions be heard. Here are the best tweets from Jose Aldo vs. The Korean Zombie:

Okay, so this tweet doesn’t have anything to do with the main event. But Stuart Scott is not too thrilled with the Machida-Davis decision. He’s not alone.

It certainly seemed like an episode of The Walking Dead. The Korean Zombie actually attempted to put his injured shoulder back in place…mid-fight:

Seriously.

To be fair, Aldo was winning the fight handily heading into the fourth frame. But the injury prevents any type of closure.

Even with the loss, “The Korean Zombie” remains a fan favorite.

Aldo appeared to be dealing with an injury of his own, but a rematch sounds plausible.

That pretty much sums things up.
