BJ Penn Video: Get Rid of Belts, Judges, Decisions for More UFC Exciting Fights

Mixed martial arts has come a long way since its beginning in the way of rules, but one fighter, the legendary B.J. Penn, would like to revert to at least some of the rules that were around in the beginning of the UFC.

In the early days of the organization, there were no judges. Fight outcomes were determined by finishes in the form of either knockouts or submissions. There weren’t fighters who got in the cage with the intention of laying on top of their opponent to “score points.”

Of course, the sport has grown into a much more skill based sport today, but the truth is that the average fight today may be less “exciting” for the casual fan than what they were getting during the “bare-knuckle brawl” days.

Not only that, but there weren’t even traveling championship belts that were defended from event to event. Sure, there were tournaments held and the winner was considered a “champion,” but he didn’t have to live in fear of defending that title. Because of this, they were less likely to go with a “lay and pray” technique that may be more effective, but produce less entertainment for the fans.

Penn believes that these two concepts from the early days of the UFC would be a step back in the right direction for creating fights that are more aesthetically pleasing.

“Get rid of the belts, get rid of the judges—first thing, right off the bat,” Penn begins. “Any fight that goes to a decision should just be an automatic draw.”

The legendary Ken Shamrock vs. Royce Gracie fight from UFC 5 produced the first draw the organization had ever seen. Though the fight was an important one when looking back on the history of the sport, a fight that didn’t end in a submission or knockout back then was simply turned into a draw.

“The only way you can win a fight is by finishing your guy, the only way you can lose is by getting finished,” Penn continued.

Not only would this rule revival reduce the number of “boring” fights, but it would also completely remove the possibility of the kind of controversial judges’ decisions we have seen particularly in recent years.

Penn believes that entertaining fights should be the most important thing when it comes to fighter pay, as well.

“You put all the guys with the most draws at the bottom of the pay scale. You put all the guys with the most wins, least losses and least draws at the top of the pay scale, and you fit down the middle accordingly,” he explained. “No one will want to go to a decision, no one would try to fight for points, because you can’t win unless you finish the guy.”

At the moment, two of the highest paid fighters in the UFC include welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and lightweight champion Frankie Edgar who are the only fighters to hold more than one victory over Penn in their careers. Of course, three out of the four combined victories between the two over Penn have come by way of judges’ decision and two of those were also considered very controversial.

Without judges’ decisions, Penn believes that the true best fighters would emerge.

Of course, these are all highly unlikely rule changes, but ones that many fans would certainly agree with the former multi-divisional champion on.

UFC Rumor: Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman in “Deep Talks” with WWE

Former UFC champion Brock Lesnar may be back sooner than we first expected—but it might actually be with a former employer, the WWE.

Long-time pro wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer wrote today in the Wrestling Observer that Lesnar has  “either made a deal or at least [is] in very serious negotiations to have a business relationship with WWE.”

Lesnar remains hugely popular with the WWE audience and has been linked to many returns in the past after he left the company to pursue a career in the NFL in 2004.

“It is not to wrestle, and as far as what we’ve heard, would also not be as a television character,” Meltzer continued.

Top WWE superstar CM Punk delivered a memorable promo this past Monday on WWE’s RAW program where he mentioned both Brock Lesnar and his on-screen manager, friend and book partner Paul Heyman.

According to Meltzer’s report, both Heyman and Lesnar are in negotiations with the WWE.

As it is an entertainment industry, there are many opportunities for work off-camera for both men. But MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani also indicated that the deal could simply be a merchandise agreement.

Lesnar pulled out of his scheduled UFC 131 main event fight with Junior dos Santos, citing a second bout with the disease diverticulitis, which gave him a major health scare not long after he won the UFC heavyweight championship. He was replaced in the main event by Shane Carwin, and his return date has not yet been finalized.

Update:

According to Jeremy Botter of HEAVY, there have been absolutely no discussions to bring back either Lesnar or Heyman as on-screen characters in WWE.

The discussions have been for a WWE-related consumer products deal which the WWE has no final say in and are not involved in negotiations.

Paul Heyman will not be involved in said product.

The Zuffa-owned Strikeforce promotion has decided to part ways with former heavyweight title contender after his arrest Wednesday for felony-degree assault on his wife. He was also charged with a gross misdemeanor for child endangerment.

According to MMAJunkie, the release was confirmed by UFC President Dana White immediately following the UFC 132 press conference this afternoon. He noted that the release came immediately after the arrest in Apple Valley, MN.

Rogers last competed for the promotion less than two weeks ago, losing his quarterfinals match in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament to veteran Josh Barnett. He had dropped three straight fights for the promotion, which is often the kiss of death for a Zuffa fighter.

The police report indicated that Rogers had both strangled and repeatedly punched his wife in front of their two young girls. He admitted that he had been drinking earlier in the evening.

Rogers’ bail has been set at $100,000 during a hearing Wednesday and his next hearing has been scheduled for Friday at 11:00 a.m. CT.

Strikeforce’s Brett Rogers Arrested for Domestic Assault, Endangerment of Child

Tough-to-read news from the world of mixed martial arts today, as Minnesota fighter Brett Rogers is facing several charges of domestic assault after police say he violently attacked his wife Wednesday.

Rogers, 30, has been charged with third-degree assault, domestic assault by strangulation, a pattern of stalking conduct, all felonies. He was also charged with the endangerment of a child.

Official police reports indicate that officers were dispatched to the Rogers home in Apple Valley, Minn. at approximately 12:35 a.m. on Wednesday evening, when a caller reported hearing yelling, a female screaming and glass being broken from a neighbor’s home.

Rogers stated to police that he had argued with his wife and that she hit him during the argument, so he hit her back. Rogers had no visible injuries on his body. The report also adds that his breath smelled of alcohol and that he admitted to consuming alcohol that evening.

A neighbor reported that he had looked out his window and saw Rogers standing over his wife, repeatedly punching her in the head and face as she lay on the ground. Another neighbor stated that he saw her with blood “streaming from her face and mouth” with what looked to be a missing tooth.

Rogers’ nine-year-old daughter saw the incident unfold and yelled at her father to stop. Rogers’ 10-year-old daughter was also present and witnessed the attack, admitting that she had seen her father strike her mother in the past. She also reported that her father had struck the children within the last two years.

Rogers’ wife, T.R., was located by officers walking by a nearby school with injuries on her face that included a golf ball-sized bump above her left eyebrow, injuries to her ears and jaw, a missing tooth and numerous wounds to her neck and back.

She repeatedly denied that she was assaulted and said that she had simply fallen on the ground.

Paramedics were called immediately due to what were described as serious injuries to her head. She was transported to a nearby hospital and released the following afternoon.

Both children told a neighbor whom they had been staying with that they were afraid to go home and that their father had “choked” them in the past.

An officer attempted to speak with T.R. on Thursday, but she refused, telling him that the assault was her fault.

Rogers made his first court appearance on Thursday. His bail was set in the amount of $100,000, with conditions. His next court appearance is July 1.

Update:

According to UFC President Dana White, Brett Rogers has been released of his Strikeforce contract immediately.

UFC Commentator Joe Rogan Set to Return as Host of NBC’s "Fear Factor" This Fall

News from the world of entertainment hit today as it was officially announced that UFC commentator and world-famous comedian Joe Rogan will return to host the revival of NBC’s Fear Factor in 2011.

Production for the show will begin in late July, and new episodes could begin airing as soon as September of this year.

“It doesn’t seem real,” Rogan told TV Guide Magazine. “It seems like some sort of bizarro dream world. But I’m looking forward to it. The idea of sitting at home and watching someone else host it would have driven me crazy.”

Rogan was the host of the show’s original run from 2001-2006, which became a cultural phenomenon largely due to strange and often times disgusting stunts which the contestants were required to complete in order to be in the running for the prize money given to the winner.

NBC will be filming eight new episodes of Fear Factor with Joe Rogan as the host. According to Fear Factor executive producer Mike Kunitz, there was never any plan to have anyone other than Rogan involved in the reincarnation of the show.

“We wouldn’t want to do this show without Joe,” Kunitz said. “This makes me 100 percent relieved. Part of the nostalgia of the show coming back is Joe Rogan. Joe is a guy’s guy, but women like him as well.”

In the years since the show went off the air, there have been many technological advancements which should lead to a more exciting show, in addition to the obvious expansion of High Definition television.

“The stunt world has evolved significantly in the last seven years, since we taped the last show,” says Kunitz. “Technically stunts now are so much better at what we can do—much bigger falls, much faster falls. Bigger explosions, faster car stunts, bigger flips. We want to take it to the next level.”

Rogan is excited to return to the show and sees the role as something that is right up his ally.

“What I brought to Fear Factor the first time I hope to bring to it again—a background in competitive athletics along with being a standup comedian. This show is tailor-made for me,” Rogan said. “Once it was a reality, I got really fired up about it. It seems so strange that a show could be off the air for five years and come back.”

Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos Leaving Strikeforce, Vacates Women’s 145 Pound Title

Another tough blow was dealt to the struggling sport of women’s mixed martial arts, as Cage Potato reports that torch-bearing Strikeforce 145-pound women’s champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos will no longer be with the organization.

According to the report, the dominant champion is now a free agent after failing to come to an agreement on a contract extension with the now Zuffa-owned Strikeforce promotion. The deadline for an extension ran out on June 28, and her official ties to the organization are now non-existent.

“Cyborg” last competed over a year ago when she destroyed a top contender in Jan Finney, defending her Strikeforce women’s middleweight champion while also earning Sherdog.com’s “Beatdown of the Year” award in the process.

Initial speculation indicates that Zuffa was either unwilling to give Santos what she and her representation believed she is worth or that they have decided entirely against promoting women’s mixed martial arts in the future, even under the Strikeforce name, which has helped the sport grow so much over the past couple of years.

Of course, the latter wouldn’t be much of a surprise. UFC President Dana White has said many times that he doesn’t believe that women’s mixed martial arts is worth bringing into the UFC and seemed disinterested with the whole concept.

According to the source, Cris is already in discussions with another, unnamed promotion and hopes to have a contract negotiated as early as this weekend. Her manager Rudimar Fedrigo commented on the situation, telling TATAME.com that, “We’re still negotiating, the financial part is the point, but, meanwhile, she’s set to fight in Brazil and is negotiating two more fights in Singapore.”

There have also been past rumors, which were shot down because of her Strikeforce contract, that she was considering a run in the WWE

Cris’ husband, Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, remains under contract with Zuffa through Strikeforce.
