Mixed martial arts is a sport in which two men generally come together to settle their feuds and differences in the truest form of problem solving—by punching one another in the face. Generally, this solves whatever disagreement there may have been in the past, but sometimes, we end up with situations like the feud between UFC President Dana White and former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz.

White and Ortiz have a long history of hilarious back-and-forth banter with each man having bested the other somehow on one occasion or another, even though they have never actually stepped in the cage toe-to-toe. Of course, it’s hard to blame White for never fighting Ortiz. After all, he isn’t an elite-level fighter and generally just uses his limited MMA training to stay in shape.

But it all may come to an end at UFC 132 when Ortiz fights Ryan Bader in what could be his final bout in the Octagon. On a long losing streak and battling injuries for the past few years, Ortiz desperately needs a win to guarantee that Dana White won’t get the last laugh by being able to cut him.

But regardless of the result in that fight, their feud has sparked some of the most memorable events in the history of the sport.

So what are some of the other great rivalries that have happened in the sport? Read on as we count down the top 25 best feuds in MMA history.

The results are now in and another great night of UFC action was capped off by an a surprising result in the semi-main event of Charlie Brenneman vs. Rick Story and an unbelievable main event from heavyweights Cheick Kongo and Pat Barry.

Kongo was able to weather what appeared to be a sure knockout coming from Barry midway through the first round only to answer with an absolutely astonishing uppercut of his own to put Barry unconsciously on his back.

But sometimes the simple “wins” and “losses” in the record books don’t tell the whole story. As we’ll look at in this slideshow, some of the biggest “winners and losers” from tonight’s UFC on Versus 4 card did not end up with that designation on their official records.

Following the news that Nate Marquardt has been removed from his main event fight at UFC on Versus 4 against Rick Story and subsequently released from his UFC contract, this fight card may not have the star power that it once had.

Still, even without Marquardt, for a free event on Versus, the UFC is giving us some surprisingly good fights with fairly high-ranked fighters.

It’s always fun to look at the pound-for-pound rankings lists in MMA, but rarely do we go deep enough to include guys who will be competing on the undercard.

In this article, however, we’ll count down all 22 fighters who remain on this fight card which will now be headlined by the heavyweight contest between Cheick Kongo vs. Pat Barry.

UPDATE: MMAJunkie has now confirmed that the rumors of Nate Marquardt being pulled from the main event fight vs. Rick Story of the UFC on Versus 4 card scheduled for this Sunday, June 26 are true.

The story was confirmed by Marquardt’s camp, who sent out this statement:

“Nate is really disappointed,” the statement read. “He really was looking forward to making his welterweight debut, and he plans to be back in there as soon as possible.”

To further confirm this rumor, B/R MMA Editor Brian Oswald received a text moments ago from Kelly Crigger, Marquardt’s manager at Alchemist, stating simply, “Nate was not medically cleared to fight. More soon.”

Rick Story will now fight Charlie Brenneman while Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo will be promoted to the main event.

——————–

Rumors are flooding in from various sources on Twitter that the main event for UFC on Versus 4 featuring Nate Marquardt vs. Rick Story is off.

According to sources which include fellow UFC welterweight Diego Sanchez, Marquardt has been scratched from the event.

@DiegoSanchez505: ??? what happened bro heard you are out of the fight?”

U hope it is just a [rumor] but my source is pretty reliable”

The prevailing rumor is that Marquardt was simply unable to cut the necessary weight to make it down to 170 pounds for the fight.

He was scheduled to make his debut at welterweight in this fight against Rick Story and had been talking publicly about how easy the weight cut is going, but the final few days can often be the worst.

John Morgan from MMAJunkie had more on the rumor, indicating that there may already be a replacement in the works.

: Word spreading that Marquardt is late scratch, leaving Brenneman to face Story while Barry-Kongo takes main event. Working hard to verify.”

Charlie Brenneman was scheduled to fight TJ Grant on the same card, but Grant was forced off the card due to illness just a few days ago. Because the event was so close and it would be difficult to find a suitable replacement in time, the bout was instead simply scrapped.

But if the rumors are true and Story is also without an opponent, a mix-match fight between Story and Brenneman makes sense on short notice.

No word either way, yet, from the UFC; but these rumors seem to have some validity to them given the sources they are coming from.

Mixed martial arts continues to grow and expand into the mainstream as evidenced by the recent release of ESPN’s 2011 ESPY Award nominees, which include three MMA fighters: Georges St-Pierre, Jon Jones and Fabricio Werdum.

St-Pierre and Jones, both UFC champions, have been nominated for the award of “Best Fighter.” Their competition will include top-level boxers Manny Pacquiao, Sergio Martinez and Bernard Hopkins.

This relatively new ESPY award, which replaced the “Best Boxer” award in 2007, has never been won by a mixed martial artist.

St-Pierre has been nominated for the award twice before in both 2008 and 2010, but boxer Floyd Mayweather walked away with the award on both occasions.

However, given boxing’s struggles in 2011 and MMA’s ever-growing market, there is a better chance than ever that one of these two UFC studs could be representing their sport with by actually winning the ESPY this time.

Fabricio Werdum joins St-Pierre and Jones as a nominee, but will be up for the “Biggest Upset” ESPY award after his stunning victory last summer over former No. 1 heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko.

Fan voting has already begun, and the results will be announced when the award show airs on ESPN on July 13.
