The UFC heads to China next month for the first time in the promotion’s history. It is going to be a milestone in the expansion of the biggest MMA company in the world.

The card is not the most talent-packed card to have ever been assembled, but should be exciting nonetheless.

What should fans in China, and the rest of the world for that matter, expect from the landmark card?

The card will kick off with South Korean prospect Hyun Gyu Lim and David Mitchell. Mitchell is a grappler, while Lim is a boxer with with pretty good grappling skills himself.

In a striker vs. grappler matchup, this fight could go either way in terms of excitement. The fans will get to see a solid prospect in Lim, so that will be a positive thing.

Next up, Takeya Mizugaki and Jeff Hougland will square off in the bantamweight division. This also will be a striker vs. grappler matchup, so again, this could go either way.

Mizugaki has solid takedown defense and good striking. Hougland is a wrestler with good submission skills but green striking. If he can’t get the fight down, Mizugaki will drudge him.

We then will see Riki Fukuda and Tom DeBlass go to war in what again looks like a striker vs. grappler match. Not much needs to be said here, other than DeBlass will be the bigger fighter with better submissions, while Fukuda will be the better striker with upside.

Next, flyweights Yasuhiro Urushitani and John Lineker will square off in what should be a barn burner of a fight.

Lineker has heavy hands and good size for a 125-pounder. Urushitani is a very experienced flyweight who is also a good striker, which will make this an exciting, striking affair.

The main card will kick off with Tiequan Zhang and Jon Tuck in the lightweight division. Zhang is the only Chinese fighter on the card and will definitely be the darling of the crowd.

Tuck was impressive in his elimination-bout loss on The Ultimate Fighter. Zhang has not looked like an elite-level fighter since moving to the UFC, so this fight will be huge for him.

Alex Caceres and newcomer Kyung Ho Kang will meet next in an interesting battle. Caceres is an exciting young fighter who has put on some fun performances, while Kang is a submission fighter looking to make a name for himself.

Bantamweights are usually fun to watch, and this one will be no different. Expect to see fans on their feet during this match.

Next, Takanori Gomi will meet Mac Danzig and Paulo Thiago will fight Dong Hyun Kim. Both fights have the potential to be great.

With Gomi and Danzig, both men are boxers first, which will lead to a great standup war. Depending on how it goes, either man can use their wrestling as well to get the fight down.

With Kim and Thiago, both men are tremendous grapplers with improved striking. Whether the fight stays up or goes down, it should be a fun one.

In the co-main event, Thiago Silva fights Stanislav Nedkov. This one is going to be fun for the fans.

Both men throw heavy leather. Nedkov has bad form but throws bombs, while Silva will throw murderous strikes standing or from top position.

Finally, the main event: Rich Franklin will fight Cung Le in a battle of legends. Hold on to your seats for this one because both men are strikers first.

Le is a flashy striker, while Franklin is more methodical. They will battle to the fans’ excitement and make the first trip to China a memorable one.

Whoever wins, the fans will be the ultimate winner because of this fight.

As for the card as a whole, I think the Chinese fans are in for a treat. Sure, there aren’t a huge number of stars on this card, but these are usually the cards that deliver consistently from top to bottom.

Many people believe Anderson Silva is getting a cookie when he fights Stephan Bonnar at UFC 153. While most agree that Silva is obviously the better fighter and should win the fight, Bonnar will not be an easy opponent.

In that right, Silva cannot take Bonnar lightly one bit.

Yes, Silva is the best fighter in the world. Yes, Bonnar has tooled a ton of tough guys. And yes, Silva can clown most light heavyweights in the UFC.

However, Bonnar is a fighter that always fights with a purpose. Bonnar has the never-die attitude and is always in the fight.

Fighting a guy that is 20 pounds heavier than fighters you normally fight at 185 is another story. If a guy like Chael Sonnen can manhandle Silva with takedowns, what makes you think a bigger guy like Bonnar couldn’t?

Okay, so Sonnen has a great wrestling pedigree and Bonnar doesn’t come from a powerhouse wrestling background. But Bonnar mixes up his striking well enough to put Silva on his back.

In that regard, Silva better be taking this training camp seriously. Bonnar has always been the underdog, but this is the type of situation where these Rudy-like figures realize what these opportunities mean and do everything they can to capitalize on it.

So, come fight night, Anderson Silva takes a big risk in fighting Bonnar. Many don’t see it as a risk because he is supposed to dominate, but a loss would be huge for Silva.

Jon Fitch vs. Erick Silva: Who Has More on the Line at UFC 153?

UFC 153 may be headlined by a superfight between Anderson Silva and Stephan Bonnar, but one of the fights I am more interested in seeing is a welterweight showdown that features Jon Fitch and Erick Silva.

Fitch is a representative of the old guard. He has been a mixed martial artist since 2002 and has competed in the UFC since 2005. With the UFC, he has 16 career fights, has gone 13-2-1 and has even had a title shot at Georges St. Pierre.

On the other side, Erick Silva is the young blood of the UFC and has only been an MMA fighter since 2005. The 28-year-old Brazilian was once a highly touted prospect and is now considered a top contender at 170 pounds.

None of Silva’s fights have left the first round, going 2-1 in the UFC. The loss has an asterisk next to it, as he was disqualified for blows to the back of the head, which was clearly the wrong call.

In looking at these fights, he has dominated Luis Ramos, Carlo Prater and Charlie Brenneman. Silva hasn’t been in trouble against these tough opponents.

The question is, who has more on the line in this fight?

A loss to Fitch would derail Silva’s hype train and knock him down the ladder against this Top-10 welterweight.

On the flip side, a loss to Silva would be devastating to Fitch. Not only is he coming off a knee injury, but Fitch would be on a two-fight losing streak, as he lost to Johny Hendricks in his last bout.

It is hard enough for a guy like Fitch to get a title shot because of his fighting style, but it’s even tougher for him to get a title shot with two straight losses. Hell, it took Fitch eight straight wins over quality opposition to get his first title shot.

A loss for Silva would not be nearly as bad. Silva is a young, budding star who always has the chance to move up the ladder quickly with his fight style.

Fans love Silva, and he has the skills to be a star. As for Fitch, fans bore easily from his grinding style and frequently boo him.

That said, Fitch needs to win at UFC 153, or he would be winless in his last three fights. He has the most on the line in this fight.

Stephan Bonnar and Anderson Silva are set to do battle and it should be a good one. Both men are exciting fighters that should give the fans something special to watch.

As for the fight itself and how it will go down, here is the final preview and prediction.

This fight is interesting because it is technically a superfight, but it is between the top middleweight fighter and a top-25 light heavyweight. Silva is the pound-for-pound king, while Bonnar is a scrapper that worries more about fan enjoyment than rankings.

When these two step into the Octagon, we should have ourselves a fun fight.

I expect both men to strike for a while. Bonnar has a good chin and underrated striking that should be good enough to withstand Silva’s superior striking for a while.

However, Bonnar will have a game plan and natural size that should give him some advantage in this fight. That is why I expect him to look for takedowns and clinches.

To clinch with Silva is not smart, as the possibility for Silva putting Bonnar in the Thai clinch is high. We all know Silva is deadly once he grabs a hold of the Thai clinch and can end fights with his knees.

If Bonnar doesn’t get Silva down at least once, I will be surprised. This is a big fight for him with serious complications, so I think he will implement a mixed game plan.

In the end though, Silva will be too much. He will win striking exchanges. He will avoid most of Bonnar‘s takedowns, assuming Bonnar goes for them.

I don’t think Bonnar will be finished. Expect a Silva unanimous decision and a drop back to middleweight.
