The UFC’s international expansion has come at a rapid pace this year, as the introduction of UFC Fight Pass has allowed the company to put on more fight cards than any other year. This includes bringing the show on the road to markets who have yet to have an event or don’t get events nearly enough.

This year alone, the UFC has broken into Singapore, while returning to locations such as Abu Dhabi and Macau. They also plan on touchdowns in New Zealand, Ireland and Germany, among other places.

So, what other cities in foreign lands should the UFC host a Fight Night card? Let’s examine four places the UFC should touch down.

Gdansk/Warsaw

Right now, Russia is the biggest hotbed for MMA talent. In my opinion, a close second in terms of up-and-coming talent that can make an impact in this sport is the country of Poland.

The country is packed with untapped potential. Some of the great fighters they have that the UFC could sign and put on the card include Marcin Tybura, Damian Grabowski, Marcin Lasota and Lukasz Sajewski. Those are just a few of the guys they could snag.

Obviously, Mamed Khalidov is a pipe dream for the card. If the UFC were willing to cough up some serious bucks and tear Khalidov from KSW, it would really make the card great.

Not only would those new guys enhance the card, but the UFC has a few great Polish fighters they could add to the card. The UFC currently boasts Polish fighters Daniel Omielanczuk, Jan Blachowicz, Krzysztof Jotko and Piotr Hallmann, who has contributed positively to the company.

It would be a great market to tap, as the country is MMA crazy. They could draw great attendance and plant the seed for future shows.

Cape Town/Johannesburg

You may not realize it, but South Africa has become a popular place for MMA. They are currently building talent and have done a great job developing the sport.

EFCA has been putting on quality shows for the country and packing the house for those shows. It led to heavyweight Ruan Potts getting signed to the UFC, though he lost in his recent debut to Soa Palelei.

However, he is not the only solid fighter from the country. Guys like Garreth McLellan and Gideon Drotschie have the talent to make it to the UFC and occupy a spot on the card.

Sure, the talent is a little lighter in South Africa, but they would pack the house to catch a UFC show.

San Juan

There was a time when the UFC needed to seek refuge due to crazy lawmakers early in the sport. When they needed a place to put on a show, Puerto Rico stepped up and allowed the UFC to display their high-level brand of MMA.

Dana White and some friends already made a recent trip there to tour the country. They have basically vowed to go there anyways, but they’re starting with a Fight Night card to gauge interest and see if a pay-per-view in the future is doable.

It could be an event where the UFC explores the history of UFC in Puerto Rico in the lead-up to the fight. It would be a cool way to walk down memory lane and promote an event that could be in a key market.

Seoul

The UFC has touched down in China, Japan and Singapore. However, an Asian market that would be perfect for a fight card is Seoul, South Korea. In fact, they have provided some great talents for the UFC lately, which makes this city a great option for the company.

As of late, talents like Hyun Gyu Lim, Chan Sung Jung, Dong Hyun Kim, Kyung Ho Kang and Yui Chul Nam have brought the country attention due to their impressive performances. Not only that, but draws such as Benson Henderson and BJ Penn have Korean heritage, which could be used as top additions to the card.

South Korea has put on some great shows between Road FC and other local shows. If the UFC arrived, the show could be an awesome experience for the fans in attendance and those who tune in to watch.

UFC 173 marks the UFC’s return to pay-per-view this weekend. Headlined by the bantamweight championship of the world, the card boasts a deep lineup that is sure to entertain.

Renan Barao looks to continue his reign of dominance as he defends his title against TJ Dillashaw. It marks the second title fight in a row that Team Alpha Male fights for Barao’s strap.

Also on the card are Robbie Lawler, Jake Ellenberger, Daniel Cormier and Dan Henderson.

Need a reason to pony up the dough Saturday night? We’ll give you five right now.

UFC 173 is a star-studded card that promises to deliver on all fronts. The card, which is headlined by Renan Barao and TJ Dillashaw, also features names such as Dan Henderson, Daniel Cormier and Robbie Lawler, which will support the bantamweight championship.

The main card is going to be a great pay-per-view to watch. However, a stacked preliminary card also features a bunch of talented up-and-coming fighters.

Who are three guys worth keeping tabs on in the Saturday night prelims? Let’s take a look right now.

Anthony Njokuani

We haven’t seen Anthony Njokuani in over a year. That is disappointing, as the Nigerian-American striker is always in exciting fights when they revolve around his striking.

Njokuani is a devastating striker. We saw it in his WEC days when he won three straight Knockout of the Night bonuses. It has carried over to the UFC, where he has knocked out such fighters as Edward Faaloloto and Roger Bowling.

This time around, Njokuani meets Vinc Pichel in a bout that should be an interesting one. Njokuani is vastly superior on the feet, and if the fight stays upright, expect to see a masterful performance by the muay thai maniac.

Chris Holdsworth

The Ultimate Fighter has produced some top-notch season champions and some duds. With Chris Holdsworth, it looks like the UFC may have a future title contender if he continues improving as quickly as he has been.

Holdsworth was undefeated going into the reality show. Then, he choked out everyone en route to the championship. He fought at the live finale for the tournament championship, where he again won by submission over Davey Grant.

He now has a tough opponent by the name of Chico Camus. Camus is a tough out for any fighter, as he is well-rounded and durable.

A win over Camus would really give Holdsworth the momentum he needs to move toward the top-20 ranks.

Al Iaquinta

Remember Al Iaquinta? The guy who lost in the TUF finale to eventual tournament champion Michael Chiesa? Yeah, since then, he has been really good.

Since the lost, Iaquinta has won seemingly simple decisions over the likes of Ryan Couture, Piotr Hallmann and Kevin Lee. He has looked better and better with each fight, putting together great boxing combinations to complement his already solid wrestling.

He now has Mitch Clarke on his plate, a tough-as-nails Canadian who also looked very improved in his latest outing. A win for Iaquinta could earn him a top opponent in his next bout.

Bellator 120: 2 Fights for Rampage Jackson to Take Next

Bellator 120 saw the return of Rampage Jackson. In his way was a popular commodity in the form of Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal. The fight represented two of the biggest names in Bellator throwing down in the main event.

The fight was the culmination of a heated rivalry between the two big personalities. Many verbal swipes were taken during the heated buildup and near-physical altercations happened, making this a bitter feud.

When the fight actually happened, Jackson took a unanimous decision in a closely contested bout. It could have gone either way and could spawn a rematch down the road.

Who should Rampage Jackson be matched up with in the interim? Let’s take a look at the only two options he has at this point.

King Mo Lawal

The fight was close. Many people thought that Jackson won, but it really could have gone to Lawal.

The feud is actually legitimate. Whether we care or not is another question, but you have to think Bellator would jump all over the promotion of a rematch.

This fight had some drama, though it failed to live up to expectations. It was hard with the buildup, though, as there was so much talk, we thought it would be a great fight.

A second bout with King Mo would be big-time. The two fighters failed to finish each other, but if they were to throw down again, I am sure a few fans would tune in for it.

Emanuel Newton

This fight is obvious. That is because the winner of Rampage Jackson-King Mo Lawal was supposed to fight Emaunuel Newton for the Bellator Light Heavyweight Championship.

Newton is an interesting fighter with some dynamic techniques. He has the wrestling and athleticism to make Rampage uncomfortable and make this a fight. That being said, Newton and Jackson have trained in the past, which may make them a little hesitant to fight. However, if it’s to hold gold, I don’t see why Jackson wouldn’t be more than willing to throw down with Newton.

Newton has the chance to be a star. Rampage has the name to make him a star. That’s why this fight is interesting.

Rampage can continue his resurgence with a win over Newton. Not only that, but he would also become a champion in both UFC and Bellator, an accomplishment not yet had by any fighter. That in itself draws interest, even though Rampage himself is a draw on his own.

Who would win, the current young champion or the former champion returning to form?

If Newton wins, he is a champion that the UFC needs to pursue in the near future. If Rampage wins, he proves he is not done in this crazy sport.

Michael Chandler vs. Will Brooks: What We Learned from Interim Title Fight

Bellator 120 was supposed to feature a rubber match for the lightweight title between Michael Chandler and Eddie Alvarez. Instead, Chandler fought Will Brooks for the interim title on Saturday.

Chandler is the former lightweight champion, while Brooks was a shoo-in to become a future champion with Bellator. When the fight was over, Brooks took a close split decision from the former champion.

What did we learn from this fight? Let’s take a look.

What We’ll Remember About This Fight

Brooks and his resilience. He was down early thanks to Chandler’s ability to get him to the mat, but Brooks used athleticism and cardio to come back.

It was close, but Brooks showed he is a top-notch athlete. Chandler took him down, but Brooks fought back like a warrior. Beating Chandler is a big deal, and Brooks showed he is the real deal.

What We Learned About Brooks

He is a top lightweight in this sport. I have been saying that since he dominated Satoru Kitaoka in Japan, but he really proved it by beating Chandler.

He is definitely a fighter to keep your eye on.

What We Learned About Chandler

He still has to improve. Despite being a Bellator champion in the past, he proved that he is not a world-beater like he showed in his previous bouts.

He got tired quickly and was outgrappled by a guy who had a worse wrestling pedigree than him. He will get better in the gym and has a bright future, regardless.

What’s Next for Brooks?

This one is obvious. Alvarez is next. The winner is the undisputed Bellator champ and a guy that the UFC is taking a close look at.

What’s Next for Chandler?

Now that his shot at Alvarez is gone, he should enter the next lightweight tournament. He has many options, but a fight with Paul Sass, who should be in a tournament, would be an interesting scrap.

Tito Ortiz vs. Alexander Shlemenko: What We Learned from the Catchweight Bout

Bellator 120 saw a plethora of stars compete on its inaugural pay-per-view card, but former UFC champion Tito Ortiz was one of the biggest names on the card. In his fight, he took on Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko in the light heavyweight division.

The fight was interesting because Ortiz is a large light heavyweight and Shlemenko is a small middleweight. When it was all said and done on Saturday, Ortiz choked out the Russian with an arm-triangle choke.

What did we learn from this fight? Let’s take a look.

What We’ll Remember About This Fight

The size difference. Ortiz looked like he was well over 50 pounds heavier than Shlemenko in this fight. It was a David and Goliath fight. If Goliath was over the hill and fought a guy who should have been two weight classes lower.

The submission was solid technically, but the fact Bellator put this fight on was almost embarrassing. It built up a star of the past at the expense of a star of the immediate future.

What We Learned About Ortiz

We learned that Ortiz may have found his place in Bellator. Bellator is a place where prospects go to live and legends go to extend their lives, and Ortiz did the latter.

Where he goes from here is unknown. However, his win kept him away from permanent retirement.

What We Learned About Shlemenko

Shlemenko should stay in his normal weight class. He is a small middleweight who could be fighting at welterweight. He fought at light heavyweight and got choked out.

It was unfortunate that he was reduced to a bout like this, but being on the pay-per-view was necessary for him.

What’s Next for Ortiz?

Ortiz doesn’t really have a lot of options because I don’t think they would put him in a tournament. However, high-profile fights are here for him throughout his Bellator stay.

Whoever loses the Rampage Jackson vs. King Mo Lawal fight would be a great opponent for Ortiz. It would be a large name who could draw eyes when paired with Ortiz.

What’s Next for Shlemenko?

It’s back to the middleweight division for Shlemenko. He is basically waiting for the middleweight tournament winner to fight.

The winner of Brandon Halsey vs. Brett Cooper needs to be settled. The winner should fight the Russian next.
