Should MMA fans expect “Mayhem” in Jason Miller’s return at UFC 132?

A fight with Aaron Simpson awaits Mayhem’s return to the Octagon. Mayhem in last bout in the UFC, was a loss to current UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre.

Since that fight, Mayhem has gone on to build his brand and become one of those fighters that you either love, or you really hate.

Mayhem is one of the most in-your-face, whacked out, crazy fighters you’ll get. But for his first bout in the UFC, he won’t mince words with Simpson.

Its his first return to the UFC and only his second bout since last April’s, Strikeforce: Nashville.

Ring rust could play a role in his bout with Simpson. Mayhem last saw action against Kazushi Sakuraba and won by submission early in the first round at Dream. 16.

This battle between Simpson and Mayhem will be a great display of ground work. Simpson with his wrestling and Mayhem with his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

It will entertaining to see how Mayhem is able to work with Simpson and see if he can win against this wrestler.

With a win here, Mayhem will be able to shoot up the rankings a little bit further. If he can get out of this bout unscathed, and completely healthy, there is a slight chance he could take over for The Ultimate Fighter coaching duties. Shooting begins this summer and could be a quick bump in the ratings.

Mayhem should bring fireworks in his return to the UFC. Mayhem is an excellent fighter and his walkouts and fighting style are exciting to watch.

Mirko Cro Cop is known for his famous leg kicks. His saying was “right leg hospital, left leg cemetery,” and here is where he first began the legend of his leg kicks.

At Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2001, Cro Cop faced off against Yuji Nagata, a famous wrestler from the country of Japan.

Just a few seconds in, Cro Cop went for the kill and used his legendary kickboxing skills to knock down Nagata and stun him. Cro Cop quickly went for the TKO and got it just 20 seconds into the fight. It was a young Cro Cop’s third bout and his second win.

This bout began Cro Cop’s career, and after this, he has gone on to become a fan favorite and top fighter. Even now, at the age of 36, Cro Cop can still hang with fighters.

Cro Cop is currently 27-9-2 with one no contest and is considered retired, but talks of him fighting yet again have resurfaced, and it has become a very good possibility. Cro Cop was last seen at UFC 128, where he suffered a third-round knockout loss to Brendan Schaub.

Nagata’s career story is different. Nagata has only had two fights in his entire MMA career. One was this fight with Cro Cop, the other was to Fedor Emelianenko. That might be the best 0-2 record of all-time. Neither fight, though, lasted more than one minute and two seconds.

Afterwards, Nagata went back to Japan Pro Wrestling and hasn’t fought since his 2003 knockout loss to Emelianenko.

Strikeforce middleweight, Tim Kennedy, must be having a good week. Kennedy, a former special forces sniper and green beret, spent time in Afghanistan looking for Osama bin Laden. Kennedy is happy justice has been served shown by his MMA-fight?urn=mma-wp1998″>interview with Steve Cofield on ESPN Radio.

“If somebody hurt my family, I wouldn’t want to sit there and watch that guy executed. I would just want to know that justice was done,” Kennedy said.

On top of letting out his feelings towards bin Laden in the interview, Kennedy also talked about who his next opponent will be.

TK: “It’s not 100 percent yet, but it looks like it’s going to be at the end of July on the Dan Henderson/Fedor card, and I’m already gettin’ in my training camp, gettin’ ready to go, so for me, I’m fighting at the end of July.  I just have to get somebody to say yes to fight me.”

SC:  “Any clue who the candidates are?”

TK: “I’m hoping for Robbie Lawler, that’s who I asked for at the end of my last fight with Manhoef.  He’s the number two guy in Strikeforce behind Jacare, and if I’m not fighting for the title, give me Robbie Lawler.  Let me fight that guy.”

If Kennedy and Lawler were to be added to the July card, they would be added with a lot of good names on the card.

The card features former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Muhammad Lawal versus Reoger Gracie. It also features the other former light heavyweight champ, Rafael Cavalcante versus Ovince St. Preux.

Of course though, the big fight on the card is a bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson.

Nick Diaz’s Move to Boxing Wasn’t a Bluff, Diaz and Jeff Lacy Sign on to Fight

If you thought Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz was bluffing when he said he was considering making a move to boxing, you were dead wrong.

Now Diaz has an opponent for his first boxing match. His opponent? Former IBF super-middleweight champion and great knockout artist Jeff “Left-Hook” Lacy.

The two will square off in the ring sometime in the fall of 2011.

“This is a very dangerous fight for both men. Not only is this fight dangerous but stylistically it is very intriguing. I expected more resistance from fight fans and media in regards to this match-up but its amazing as to the hundreds of calls and e-mails I’ve received from fans on both sides wanting to see this match-up take place,” said promoter, Don Chargin in a press release.

“I’ve received more than a few inquiries from some other very high-profile boxers that want to step up and fight Nick. Its been a real whirlwind.”

Lacy could be the end to Diaz, as he possesses great ability and speed in both hands—enough to stop Diaz. The title for the fight is “Breaking History.”

“I’ve been around boxing for quite some time and I’ve seen a lot of great, tough fighters in my six decades within the sport. I believe that if Nick had been one of those kids who had picked up boxing from a youth, he’d undoubtedly be a world-champion today,” said Chargin.

“Sometime within the next 2 weeks I’ll be personally making the trek to Cesar Gracies gym to setup a private, closed door sparring session between Nick and a few nameless top-level contenders I have in mind.”

This fight has been allowed due to a clause in Diaz’s contract with Strikeforce where he can sign a contract to pursue boxing and still maintain his career as an MMA fighter.

Diaz’s training partner, Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, feels his buddy will do just fine in boxing.

“I know I can’t hang with [top level] pro boxers, I’m realistic, I know I’d get smashed. Nick Diaz goes [to] spar with Andre Ward and to me is the best 167 pounder in the world out there and he survives. He has bad days; he might even have good days and that’s the toughest guy in the world,” said Melendez on Inside MMA.

“If he can hang with him and have good days against him, I think Nick Diaz will do just fine with someone like Fernando Vargas and a lot of guys out there. (Diaz) spars a lot of tough guys. He’s already doing it, he’s already there. He’s also not naive about stuff, so I think it’ll be great for him.”

Diaz will now be officially making the trek over to boxing as both fighters have signed on the dotted line. Diaz’s signature was confirmed by his coach, Cesar Gracie via Twitter:

If Diaz does make the jump to boxing, he already has the tools in place to succeed. Maybe Diaz will end up like James Toney when he made the move to MMA. Diaz will definitely take this a lot more seriously and training with a fighter like Ward is really a great step in the right direction.

Diaz could be using this foray into boxing as an excuse for the UFC to sign him and create the matchup against current UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre—a fight that many MMA fans have been clamoring for since GSP’s lackluster performance against Diaz’s training partner, Jake Shields, last week at UFC 129.

UFC president Dana White is supposed to fly to Stockton to talk both Diaz and Gracie out of making the switch to boxing. Perhaps that GSP fight is his offer to keep Diaz in MMA.

Update

According to ESPN’s Josh Gross, Diaz could back out and take the GSP fight:

“RT @Ty_Hicks @JoshGrossESPN If he’s signed the contract can he just back out to take the GSP fight?”

Yes. MMA contract takes precedence.
