With the time until UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro now measured in hours instead of days, the time for talk is almost over.

You know what that means. The time for gambling has almost begun.

In that spirit, here are the final betting odds and predictions for every bout on the UFC 134 fight card.

Because gambling is illegal in most places, this is for entertainment purposes only. Though if you wanted to place a friendly wager or two using, say, Goldfish crackers, I suppose I wouldn’t judge you too harshly.

The odds are from of Bodog.com

Very few activities in life come with a mercy rule. Mixed martial arts is one of them.

Though strikes and knockouts steal a lot of the headlines, a well-executed submission is truly a thing of beauty; the perfect blending of brain and brawn.

Its unequivocal nature is also appealing. If you tap out (or pass out, or your arm gives out), that really isn’t something that lends itself to interpretation. You wave the white flag, you concede defeat. Maybe that’s part of what makes submissions, and MMA in general, so appealing; very rarely is there such a clear winner and loser elsewhere in life.

Anyway, here are my picks for the top 50 submissions in MMA history. With so many to choose from, it can be tough to winnow it down even this far.

For the sake of simplicity, women were not considered here (though that could be a whole list on its own). To further narrow the field, I used the following selection criteria (in no particular order):

*Degree of difficulty
*Damage inflicted
*Inventiveness or creativity
*Quality of execution
*Importance of the fight
*Circumstances within the fight
*Caliber of opponent
*”Wow” factor

So there you have it. I’m sure there are a few that could be on here that aren’t and vice versa. If you see any such grievous injustices, please feel free to sound off in the comments. Thanks for reading.

This Saturday’s UFC 134 fight card in Rio de Janeiro is the culmination of a busy MMA summer schedule. That culmination will culminate when Anderson Silva, the consensus best mixed martial artist in the known solar system, faces celebrated Japanese grappling specialist Yushin Okami.

As you may have heard, Okami is ready for this. He is physically strong. He gets in his reps at the gymnasium. And did you also hear he was the last man to beat The Spider? It’s true. Glad I was the first person to break that news to you.

To be certain, this main event for the middleweight strap will be a crazy combination of styles. Muay Thai versus wrestling. Yin and yang. Oil and sludge. But what, specifically, should viewers expect?

Here’s a detailed breakdown of every phase of this fight.

Sometimes, things just don’t go your way. Such is life.

The UFC is no exception. One minute, you’re on top of the world. You’re The Champ. Next minute, you’re back in the pack. The bee’s knees no longer.

The guys in this list could tell you all about that. They are the shortest-reigning beltholders, by weight class and overall, in UFC history. Read through this article, then sit back and watch all that sweet, sweet bar bet revenue come a-rolling in.

Joking aside, I’m making no value judgments about the “quality” of these individuals’ time atop the mountain. (As you’ll see, it’s a mixed bag in any event.)  After all, there’s probably a semi-decent chance their title runs will last longer than mine.

Featherweight and bantamweight, being new divisions with their inaugural champions still firmly in place, are of course excepted. The list is also restricted to fighters who lost the title in the cage or were stripped of the belt against their will. No vacations or other voluntary relinquishments need apply.

Without further ado, here they are in descending order by weight class, concluded by your grand champion of title-reign brevity.

UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva is the greatest mixed martial artist on planet Earth today, and quite possibly of all-time. Of this I have no doubt. And I’m honestly not convinced there’s anyone in the world today who could beat him.

So why, then, am I writing an article about guys who have the tools to dethrone The Spider?

Well, for one, no one is unbeatable. Anyone who follows MMA (or sports in general) knows that anything can happen. Two, while I wouldn’t put money on anyone defeating Silva, there are some guys who because of their physical talents or fighting styles do measure up favorably against The Spider.

Here are those five guys. A couple ground rules: I only considered middleweights, light heavyweights and welterweights who could move up to middleweight (guess who that is!), because those are the three categories of fighter who could actually meet Silva in a cage. In addition, given the fluid world of MMA promotions and the drawing power of the UFC, I considered guys from across the sport, not just those currently working in the Octagon.

Set ’em up. Knock ’em down.

It’s time for the ultimate UFC drinking game.

Hoist up a glass of your favorite brew, energy drink, nutrient-infused water, diet cola, pickle juice, protein shake, soy latte, Lyoto Machida’s urine…it doesn’t matter. As long as you have it in quantity, and you’re a fan of the UFC, you’re good to go.

And this isn’t one of those theoretical “drinking games” either. It was designed not only to be an entertaining read, but an actual, functional game. Come next fight night, I’m playing this thing.

Take a look and see what you think. As with all good drinking games, the rules are mutable. Got a new wrinkle to suggest? Feel free to toss it off in the comments.

And hey…cheers, mate.
