Frank Mir‘s arrival onto the UFC stage in 2001 was full of promise and hope.

At the time, the UFC heavyweight division was flooded with big bodies who threw heavy lumber, yet lacked a ground game to balance out the demands of being a mixed martial artist.

Mir exploited these weaknesses with his brilliant jiu-jitsu game. Submitting four of his first seven opponents, including a timeless highlight reel snapping of Tim Sylvia’s forearm from an arm bar submission in 2004 to win the UFC heavyweight championship, Mir’s future was at its brightest.

In a fleeting moment, however, the one-time king of the UFC heavyweight division was removed from his regal status by a motorcycle accident in 2004.

Severely damaging ligaments in his knee and breaking his femur, Mir was stripped of his title and forced to climb back up the UFC heavyweight division ladder to once again compete for a championship.

The road back from his injury has been challenging for the one-time heavyweight champion.

Plagued with questionable losses, experts have doubted Mir’s focus and determination to once again sit atop the heavyweight throne.

Conversely, Mir has pulled off stunning upsets, including a submission victory over Brock Lesnar and a knockout win over the iron-jawed Brazilian, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

With a 5-3 record over his past eight matchups, experts once again are questioning as to whether the unfocused Frank Mir will enter the Octagon this Saturday against Roy Nelson.

Roy “Big Country” Nelson is a paradigm within the Octagon.

With the physique of the “before” pictures for Jennie Craig, pundits wonder how a man whose mid-section is the size of a beach ball can have the skills needed too compete on the world’s biggest MMA stage.

Physique aside, there is no doubt that Nelson is a dangerous fighter.

Possessing a tremendous cardiovascular conditioning reserve, excellent boxing skills and a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Nelson’s skill-set is undeniable.

The Season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter winner has fought well within the famed UFC Octagon.

With a UFC record of 2-1, Nelson has knocked out both Brendan Schaub and Stefan Struve.

His only loss within the UFC has been to Junior dos Santos. Nelson is the only heavyweight fighter to survive the heavy hands and lethal punching power of JDS, taking the Brazilian star the distance in a unanimous decision defeat.

Both Mir and Nelson possess excellent ground games and the boxing talent to earn a victory by knockout.

As the better athletic fighter, Frank Mir will need to couple his athleticism with his resurrected stand-up abilities to damage Roy Nelson on their feet.

Landing heavy punches to Nelson may not knock out “Big Country;” however, softening up his opponent with solid strikes will open up the opportunity for Mir to take this fight to the ground and utilize his advantage in the jiu-jitsu department to lock up a submission victory.

Simple game plan, I know.  However, one variable does exist. And that questionable component is Frank Mir’s mindset coming into this fight.

If Mir is focused and has performed the necessary training to earn a victory, he should resemble the fighter who once dominated during his early years within the UFC.

However, if Mir is off track in his preparation and that weakness follows him into the Octagon this Saturday, Roy Nelson’s hand will be raised in victory and “Big Country” will climb one step closer to earning a title shot.

Enjoy the fights.

UFC 130: Randy Couture Predicts Main Event Fight of Frank Mir vs. Roy Nelson

The co-main event of UFC 130 features a heavyweight bout between the former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir and the winner of The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights, Roy “Big Country” Nelson.

Sitting down to speak with Affliction, Randy “The Natural” Couture, a three-time UFC heavyweight champion and current hall-of-fame retiree, voiced his thoughts and analysis regarding this matchup.

Speaking about both fighters excellent ground games, Couture said, “Mir is remarkable on the ground. We saw him break (Tim) Sylvia’s arm and he has a great submission game.”

Like Frank Mir, Roy Nelson is tremendously talented in the jiu-jitsu department.  “Roy is no slouch either,” Couture said. Earning a black belt under Renzo Gracie, Nelson is more than well-equipped to battle off of his back.

With both fighters equally strong on the ground, Couture believes that the “jiu-jitsu negates each other. Even for big guys, they are both good on the ground.”

Solid ground games leaves only the opportunity to stand and trade in the center of the Octagon to determine a victor.

However, one variable exists that concerns “The Natural.” And that variable is Frank Mir’s questionable mindset coming into this fight.

“It’s interesting to see how serious Mir is taking this (fight),” he said. “Is he going to come in in great shape and try to make another run with the top guys? Or is he just punching a card?”

Athletically, Frank Mir holds the advantage. “I would say that Mir is the better athlete,” Couture said. “He is probably the stronger guy. He’s got more experience and he was the heavyweight champion.”

With that said, however, Nelson possesses excellent boxing skills to be able to stand and trade with Mir.

“He (Roy Nelson) has a tremendous right hand. He has finished a lot of fights that way. He’s like a Timex, he takes an amazing, amazing beating.”

Additionally, unlike Mir’s variable which can serve as a negative, Couture is convinced that Nelson’s variable is a positive.

“Roy has this unknown deal. He ain’t fun to look at, but he’s effective. He gets the job done,” Couture said.

According to Randy Couture, the game-plan for this co-main event between Frank Mir and Roy Nelson will be stand and exchange strikes in the center of the cage.

Falling in line with my prediction posted last week, Couture questions Mir’s mental focus and his ability to maintain a high level of competition against “Big Country.”

Like me, “The Natural” believes that Roy Nelson will be the victor of this heavyweight duel.

“I’m gonna go with the upset and go with Roy Nelson in this fight.”

UFC 130: Randy Couture Predicts Main Event Fights: Jackson vs. Hamill

UFC 130 will take place this Saturday, May 28, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Preliminary card action includes the bantamweight debut of the highly regarded and extremely talented Brazilian, Renan Barao.

Spike TV will air a tremendous bantamweight matchup between Miguel Torres and Demetrious Johnson.

Main card action includes a middleweight bout between the hard-hitting ex-Marine, Brian Stann, scheduled to square off against the former Sengoku middleweight champion, Jorge Santiago.

Additional pay-per-view fights include a barn-burner between Thiago Alves and Rick Story in the welterweight division.

The co-main event of the evening is a heavyweight duel between the former UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir, and the up-and-coming Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights winner, Roy Nelson.

In the main event, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, will enter the Octagon against Matt “The Hammer” Hamill.

With questions looming regarding both main events, experts and pundits do not seem to share a common viewpoint as to who will be the victor for both fights.

To provide more clarification, UFC hall-of-fame fighter, and recent retired MMA superstar, Randy Couture, sat down with Affliction to analyze and predict the outcome of “Rampage” versus “The Hammer.”

“So many questions surround “Rampage,” Couture stated. “Where is he training? What is he involved in? Is he taking it (this fight) seriously? Will he be prepared? What kind of shape will he be in?”

These questions and more cloud experts’ views as to how Jackson will perform this Saturday.

In contrast, Couture is confident that Matt Hamill will be extremely prepared for this light heavyweight battle.

“Hamill is not the guy you don’t want to fight not fully prepared. (Hamill) has got a ton of heart, a great wrestling background, and showed some tremendous striking in his last couple of outings.”

Familiar with both fighters and their strengths and weaknesses, Couture commented on “Rampage’s” strengths inside the Octagon.

“(Rampage) hits like a mack truck. If you stand in front of this guy (Quinton Jackson), he will flat knock your head off.”

“Jackson is predominately a striker coming into this fight. It’ll be interesting to see if Hamill can take him to the ground and take some steam from him (Jackson).”

Continuing to comment on both fighters abilities inside the cage, Couture stated, “Rampage is more that inside fighter. He throws those hooks. He throws those uppercuts. He throws those types of punches. Hamill’s style of striking draws Rampage in and frustrates him. This makes it easier for Hamill to potentially take him down.”

In the end, the hall-of-fame fighter and legendary icon Randy Couture feels that Hamill will have his hand raised in victory.

“I’m gonna go with the potential upset with the underdog in Matt Hamill.”

Confident that a solid Hamill will defeat a potentially unmotivated Jackson, Couture’s pick is in line with my prediction posted earlier this week.

This Saturday will determine whether or not Quinton Jackson is back in the light heavyweight championship discussion once again, or if Matt Hamill continues to climb up the contender’s ladder.

I welcome your comments.

Live from the Los Angeles Sports Arena, I will be sitting cage-side providing the night’s mixed martial arts action.

Cage vs. Cons is Los Angeles’s largest live, professional mixed martial arts, hip-hop, and tattoo expo event. Today’s activities started at 11:00 a.m. with musical performances by Too $hort, the Dogg Pound, E-40, and much more.

Hosts for tonight’s event include Tommy “Tiny” Lister, Deebo from Friday, and long-time movie star, Danny Trejo. For those who are not familiar with this unique event, Cage vs. Cons features high octane professional fights that pits cops, firefighters, and former military against ex-cons in ten professional bouts.

Below the gimmicky surface, the real message of this unique promotion is a vision created by the founder Michael Lynch. Lynch wanted to provide the children of Los Angeles County the opportunity to escape the gang-riddled lifestyles of their neighborhoods.

He has utilized mixed martial arts as that avenue for escape instilling discipline, respect, and an understanding that gangs are not the only option. Follow along as I provide up-to-the minute play-by-play of tonight’s fights. Enjoy the fights. Todd Seyler
