Shortly after losing to Jon Jones at UFC 159, Chael Sonnen stood in the Octagon and told UFC commentator Joe Rogan, “I’m going to think it through. I’m not going to be one of the guys to hang around if there’s not a road to the title, then this sport isn’t for me. I believe that was probably my last opportunity.”
Between Saturday and Tuesday evening when Sonnen resumed his co-hosting duties on UFC Tonight Sonnen thought things through, and his thoughts? He’s not ready to walk away from the sport just yet.
The 36-year-old Sonnen said that he still has goals to achieve in MMA and that he would continue to fight in the light heavyweight division.
In typical Sonnen fashion he wasted no time in picking a fight. His focus has shifted to a man that he has had some beef with in the past, Wanderlei Silva, saying, “I’m not going anywhere until me and Wanderlei straighten this thing out once and for all.”
The comments from Sonnen brought the following tweet from Silva:
To which Sonnen replied with two tweets of his own:
Silva is coming off a second-round knockout win over Brian Stann at UFC on Fuel 8, a fight card that took place on March 2 of this year. So, schedule wise the fight does make sense for the fighters and the UFC.
According to BR MMA’s own Jeremy Botter, the fight makes sense for the fans as well, maybe even as the headlining bout for the August 17 UFC on Fox Sports 1, uh One (c’mon UFC, let’s lose the numbers) card.
The fire’s already lit for this one, so odds are it will happen. It’s probably just a matter of when and where and how much the trash talk is going to elevate.
