Chael Sonnen was one of the fighters on hand for the UFC Fan Expo over the July 4 weekend in Las Vegas. Sonnen participated in a fan Q-and-A session, during which he told all assembled that he is without a current UFC contract.
This is not the first time we have heard this story from Sonnen. In the past, Sonnen has said that he was without a contract (via Steve Austin Show) when he fought Anderson Silva and Jon Jones.
However, it was the first time that Sonnen laid out some of the contract demands he had for UFC president Dana White:
Jello Biafra replaces Bruce Buffer as ring announcer.
Every fight I’m in must be a No. 1 contender fight or a title fight. If I lose, I get an immediate rematch until I win.
No media can look me in the eye or they will be removed from the room.
Headset legalized through the commission, so I can call my own fights.
No longer will I walk to the ring, I need to be carried.
Keys to your least favorite Ferrari.
I can Skype or Facetime my fights if I don’t feel like flying.
Tell GSP to quit being such a dick; I’ll return his truck when I’m done with it.
“It’s not all about money, people, there’s more to these contracts. They’re very sophisticated,” Sonnen said in closing.
It should be noted that earlier in the session, Sonnen was asked to give advice on how to build a brand as a fighter. To that question, Sonnen replied, “First thing, when you are asked a question, remember that you are not under oath. I don’t answer questions; I handle questions.”
Obviously, Sonnen’s list of demands was an example of how to handle a question.
