Chael Sonnen is the odd man out of the official UFC rankings.
Following UFC 156, the UFC released its first ever ranking system, which includes the top 10 fighters from every weight class.
In a post on Twitter, the self-proclaimed “Oregon Gangster” seemed surprised to see his name absent from both the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. He already sees himself as one of the top light heavyweights in the world, despite never actually competing at 205 pounds in the UFC.
The rankings were formulated by a group of media members who were selected from various outlets as part of a voting panel.
Sonnen is easily one of the top five middleweights in the world, but he was likely left out of that category due to his recent move to the light heavyweight division. He is slated to challenge Jon Jones for the UFC title on April 27.
Doesn’t being a top contender count for something?
Sonnen was probably overlooked for the obvious fact that he has never competed in the UFC’s light heavyweight division. Many still aren’t convinced he even deserves a title shot. He is already coming off a devastating knockout loss to Anderson Silva.
There is some validity to Sonnen‘s angle. Frankie Edgar has lost three straight, and he is listed as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. He is also ranked as a top five featherweight, despite his only fight at 145 pounds being a loss to Jose Aldo.
Did the voters get it wrong? Should Chael Sonnen be listed in the rankings?
