Looks like UFC president Dana White is backtracking on the notion that welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva could square off in May.
White told MMA Weekly that Silva and St-Pierre will both defend their titles a few more times before entertaining the long-awaited superfight between each other:
There’s probably three fights out there for him (Silva) at 85, then Georges (St-Pierre) will have a few more fights under his belt cause the guy’s been out such a long time. Cause before he blew his knee out, he was ready to roll.
Prior to defeating Carlos Condit at UFC 154 in November, “Rush” had not seen the Octagon for nearly 18 months due to an ACL tear he suffered in December 2011.
Silva last stepped in the cage to TKO Stephan Bonnar in the first round of their October bout at UFC 153, which took place in the “Spider’s” homeland of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
However, that bout was contested at light heavyweight. Silva last defended his middleweight title at UFC 148, where he defeated arch nemesis Chael Sonnen for the second time.
While Silva is not currently booked for a fight, White has stated that perennial contender Michael Bisping will finally get a shot at UFC gold if he defeats Vitor Belfort at UFC on FX 7 later this month.
Additionally, GSP has the opportunity to settle the score with rival Nick Diaz, a former Strikeforce title holder, at UFC 158 in March.
White also briefly mentioned that Silva could still take on light heavyweight champ Jon Jones, another superfight fans have been hoping for. Still, he told MMA Weekly that this bout is still about three fights away.
“It makes sense if you think about it. It would be almost a year and a half,” he said.
Jones has rattled off consecutive title defenses against former divisional champions in Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans and Vitor Belfort.
He next title defense comes against Sonnen in April, after the two coach against one another on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter.
Is there a legitimate chance of ever seeing Silva fight GSP or Jones or are both bouts simply a pipe dream at this point?
