Going head-to-head with the NFL’s Super Bowl is like committing financial and promotional suicide.
It just isn’t the right move when you consider the millions upon millions of fans that will be tuning in to see the Denver Broncos take on the Seattle Seahawks.
But after countless reports have swirled around the news regarding the more than likely inclement weather that will touch down at Super Bowl XLVIII on Feb 2. in East Rutherford, NJ, the biggest football game of the year might be pushed back, or forward.
That means that UFC 169, which takes place on Feb. 1 in Newark, NJ, may end up having to contend with massive NFL ratings. That’s to say that next weekend’s whirling winds and swarming snowfall forces the Super Bowl to be played on a Saturday.
Such news obviously sparked response from UFC president Dana White at Thursday’s UFC on Fox 10 pre-fight press conference, originally reported by MMA Underground.
“I’ve been seeing that,” said White. “I didn’t know, I don’t keep on that stuff, but I was getting some tweets from people saying, ‘What are you going to do if the game gets moved to Saturday?’. Wow, wouldn’t that be a f—er? Yeah that would hurt.”
As one of the most stacked pay-per-views cards of 2014, featuring prolific title showdowns with Renan Barao vs. Urijah Faber and Jose Aldo vs. Ricardo Lamas, the UFC really can’t afford to go toe-to-toe with the biggest show in town.
“If 120 million people are watching the Super Bowl on Saturday…let’s just hope that doesn’t happen,” added White. “I’ll move my fight to Monday.”
As someone who will be sitting cageside and hoping for some great fights, lets remain optimistic and hope that UFC 169 goes down without a hiccup.
