Maybe Jon Jones held back.

Or maybe it really was the rust of not fighting for over a year.

Either way, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier sat just inches away from Jones at UFC 197 and could not help but think “what if?”

Cormier was scheduled to defend his title against Jones this past Saturday night before a foot injury sent him to the sidelines. As “DC” watched and discussed the Jones-Ovince Saint Preux bout he could only think about his own chances.

“I’m really disappointed I didn’t fight against him,” Cormier said, during an appearance on the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show. “There’s no way that guy could beat me. I think he did the best he could.

“Ovince did a great job. He showed Jones some things he hasn’t seen before. There will be some questions when Jon gets back home on Monday. I want nothing more than to fight Jon Jones.

If Cormier is cleared by his doctor Monday to return to training, and if Jones is healthy and allowed to fight in July, the two are expected to headline UFC 200.
