Former UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw and No. 5-ranked Cody Garbrandt seemed to be in the running for the next shot at 135-pound gold, but it was ultimately “No Love” who got the call, as he’ll take on champion Dominick Cruz in the co-main event of Dec. 30’s UFC 207 from Las Vegas, Nevada.
Cruz scored a decision victory over Dillashaw last January to recapture his title, and he seemed to be more interested in a bout with Garbrandt rather than a rematch with Dillashaw. In fact, the champion recently said that “No Love” was chosen because he’s ‘emotional’ instead of “Killashaw” who Cruz said is ‘fake’:
“The new owners of the UFC, they’re a management company, they deal with high, elite-level stars, and if you really look at the background of the people who just spent $4.2 billion on the UFC, they’re going to make specific decisions according to making the business better,” Cruz told MMAjunkie. “Dillashaw, in my opinion, doesn’t make the business better. Cody, with the emotional wreck that he is, people can grasp to that because they see the emotion in him, they see what he’s thinking, they see what he’s feeling. He lets it all out. Dillashaw is fake. Everything Dillashaw does is a lie. He can’t let his true self out.”
Cruz is without question the best bantamweight of all-time and he rarely gets hit, but he’ll face a stiff test in the form of the 25-year-old Garbrandt. “No love” has won five straight UFC bouts with four of those victories coming by way of finish.
Who do you expect to walk away with 135-pound gold next month?
