Frankie Edgar is staying at 145 pounds, and two possible opponents have already been named for his next fight.
The former UFC lightweight champion lost his third consecutive fight at UFC 156 to featherweight champ Jose Aldo in a razor-thin decision.
After the loss, MMA fans were left wondering whether or not Edgar would return to his old stomping grounds at 155 pounds, or stick around and work towards a rematch with Aldo.
During his weekly appearance on UFC Tonight, MMA journalist Ariel Helwani was once again on-hand with a bag full of goodies regarding Edgar and the ever-growing featherweight division:
“Frankie Edgar, he’s licking his wounds, he’s hoping to get back in the mix after his loss to Jose Aldo. Well, his manager, Ali Abdel-Aziz told me he wants to fight either Cub Swanson, who had a big win this weekend in London, or Dennis Siver.
He wants to fight Cub in a five-round FUEL or FX TV fight, or if that can’t happen, he’ll fight either one of them at UFC 160, Memorial Day weekend, which is shaping up to be a big card now.”
Swanson makes the most sense as the next opponent for Edgar, who is looking to catapult himself back into the title picture.
He is currently riding a four-fight win streak and coming off an impressive decision victory over top-10 featherweight contender Dustin Poirier.
Edgar, however, has lost three straight title fights. Is it fair for a surging new contender like Swanson to be forced to risk his recent run against Edgar, who continues to cash in on great opportunities handed down by the UFC?
After the loss to Aldo, UFC President Dana White stated at the post-fight press conference that Edgar would have to get in line and work his way back into the title picture. If it truly is back to the drawing board for Edgar, a bout against Siver is the perfect place to start.
Siver is 2-0 as a featherweight, and his exciting fighting style should make for an entertaining scrap with the former lightweight champ.
UFC 160 is slated for May 25 and it features both the heavyweight title bout between Cain Velasquez and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and the heavyweight grudge match between Junior Dos Santos and Alistair Overeem.
Regardless of his opponent, Edgar’s presence could turn this already stacked event into one of the best fight cards of the year.
