The one fight that mixed martial arts fans have been clamouring for above all others—between middleweight champion Anderson Silva and welterweight title holder Georges St-Pierre—could be set for the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The news was revealed by UFC president Dana White in an interview aired on this week’s UFC Tonight.
White confirmed that the fight is “pretty close” to being made, adding, “if that fight happens, it will probably happen at Dallas, TX stadium.”
The two men are widely considered the No. 1 and No. 2 pound-for-pound best fighters in the world, with both sharing the top honours for the longest-running title defences in the UFC’s history.
Both have virtually cleaned out their divisions, with Silva coming off an emphatic win over Chael Sonnen earlier this summer, and GSP set to face interim champion Carlos Condit after a long layoff.
“I mean if Georges St-Pierre beats Condit, (Silva) could be the next fight,” White told interviewer Ariel Helwani.
The NFL’s Cowboys Stadium (home of the Dallas Cowboys) holds 80,000 people. The UFC’s attendance record is 55,724 for UFC 129 on April 30, 2011, in Toronto. That match also involved GSP in his title defence against Jake Shields.
White hinted that the match will likely take place at a catchweight of 180 pounds.
But for the fight to happen at all, GSP will need to defeat Condit in their scheduled match at UFC 154 in Montreal on Nov. 17.
