Junior Dos Santos isn’t convinced Alistair Overeem‘s heavyweight wins are legitimate.
The UFC heavyweight champ believes Overeem’s failed drug test back in April puts an asterisk by every single one of his accomplishments in the heavyweight division.
During an interview with Sherdog.com, Dos Santos talked about why he feels Overeem isn’t good for the sport:
“Overeem is a pretty good fighter, but he’s starting to talk a lot of sh*t now. It’s not good. It’s not good for the sport. It’s not good for him because nobody wants to see a champion like this, saying the stupid things that he’s saying.
His results in [past] fights, we can’t take that very serious because he failed in the drug test, so it’s not good for him. For sure before he failed his test, he was using something illegal too.”
Overeem was originally scheduled to fight Dos Santos at UFC 146, but he was pulled from the bout after testing positive for elevated testosterone levels.
Since being pulled from the fight, Overeem has gone after Dos Santos in the media by painting him as a “scared” champion.
Dos Santos, who was invigorated by the comments, asked UFC President Dana White to let him fight Overeem instead of Cain Velasquez at UFC 155.
Unfortunately, a deal wasn’t able to get done due to the strict timetable for Overeem to reapply for a license with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Dos Santos is set to meet Velasquez on December 29, and Overeem is rumored to be making his long-awaited Octagon return in February against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
A win by both men would likely setup the often talked about grudge match, but as a champion, Dos Santos knows better than to look past any challenger, especially one as dangerous as Velasquez:
“Cain Velasquez is a really good opponent, and I think in this rematch, we’re going to have a very good fight…This is the UFC, and here, the real best fighters in the world will be the champion. I don’t care about who’s going to be my opponent to fight for the title, and if the UFC decides to put [Overeem] against me, I will fight him.”
Does Overeem’s failed drug test put a permanent stain on his recent success, or is Dos Santos being unfair in his comments?
