Daniel Cormier became a star after going from alternate to tournament champion in Strikeforce’s Heavyweight Grand Prix. Along the way, Cormier has called out a number of fighters, with one of them being UFC Light Heavyweight Jon Jones.

Jones responded to Cormier‘s threats on UFC Tonight (via BloodyElbow.com).

“You know, the guy is a tremendous athlete and I wish he would just do it and just stop talking about it. I am open to fighting the best guys in the world.”

Cormier has made it clear he has no intentions of fighting teammate Cain Velasquez, and now that Velasquez is the heavyweight champion, it seems as if Cormier‘s path in the UFC is clear. The former Olympian came in even lighter for his final Strikeforce bout, which seems to indicate that Cormier plans on dropping to 205 pounds as soon as he can.

Before Cormier can challenge Jones, however, he’ll need to get past former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir. The two were originally scheduled to meet last fall, but an injury forced Mir off the card and due to other injuries, the entire event was scrapped.

Jones will have an obstacle in his path as well prior to meeting Cormier. The UFC champion will  defend his title in April against former middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen.

Should both men pick up victories, a potential showdown between the two would be very interesting to break down and see in the Octagon.
