Junior dos Santos is the last fighter to defeat current UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.

And that is why the former titleholder wants a rematch with Miocic next.

“The fight that makes the most sense now is a Miocic rematch,” dos Santos told Combate. “I was the last one to beat him, so nothing’s fairer than that. Besides, I defeated a guy who was very qualified in my last outing, Ben Rothwell.

“Everyone was saying he could get a title shot if he got past me. I fit perfectly in a title shot right now. It makes total sense.”

The UFC has yet to announce plans for the heavyweight division, though former champions Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum are scheduled for December. Miocic defeated Alistair Overeem in his first title defense earlier this year.

“Velasquez could get a shot, sure, but he’s scheduled to fight Werdum, so it won’t happen now,” dos Santos said. “My fight against Miocic was really tough. I think everyone would like to see it again.”

Dos Santos (18-4) has gone 1-1 since that decision win over Miocic.
