UFC 152 was rumored to feature the Heavyweight Championship rematch between Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez.

It now appears that the fight will not be held until later in the year due to a hand injury to Velasquez.

Fightersonlymag.com is reporting that Dos Santos’ coach, Yuri Carlton, said the fight will take place towards the end of the year. In the interview, Carlton stated:

“The fight is with Velasquez, but no definite date. It was speculated for September, but that is unreal. Velasquez is with a broken hand, it’s not resolved, so I think the UFC will wait a little longer.”

With Dos Santos and Velasquez off of the UFC 152 card, which is taking place in Canada on September 22, it will be interesting to be see what fight will join the Penn vs. MacDonald matchup as the co-main event.

If the fight is pushed towards December, one could imagine it would be part of the big year-end card that the UFC tends to put on right around January 1st each year.

In addition to the Heavyweight Championship between Dos Santos and Velasquez, Alistair Overeem will also have completed his suspension by the end of December and could potentially take on Brock Lesnar (if he returns), Roy Nelson or Mark Hunt as part of the main card.

Of course with the injury-plagued year the UFC has dealt with, there really is no point in predicting matchups that may take place months down the road.
