Well, the dust has finally settled on the craziness surrounding UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor this week, as the Irishman released a statement today (April 21, 2016) indicating that he wasn’t actually retiring after releasing a tweet saying he would earlier in the week.
Despite not retiring, McGregor has still indeed been pulled from his scheduled UFC 200 (July 9, 2016) rematch with Nate Diaz, as the “Notorious” one wouldn’t acquiesce to the UFC’s heavy promotional demands.
No matter your opinions on him, McGregor simply stood up for what he believed in, albeit coming off as some type of rebel in the process.
According to former UFC lightweight champion and current Bellator title challenger Benson Henderson, McGregor acts the way he does because the UFC has ‘allowed’ him to:
“If you raise your children a certain way, they’re going to act a certain way,” Henderson said on the MMA Hour. “If you allow them to get away with certain things when they get older, they’re going to act a certain way. It’s what happened. Conor McGregor is acting a certain way because he was allowed to for much of his career, and it is what it is.”
Continuing on, Henderson noted the plethora of other fighters that handle their business in a more ‘professional’ way so to say, although he admitted that he couldn’t knock McGregor, who clearly plays by his own rules:
“You have other professional fighters who come here and do their jobs as professional athletes, and do a great job of promoting fights, good a job doing what they are supposed to do, but still acting within the means of being a professional athlete,” Henderson continued. “Some people do, some people don’t. Some people get away with doing whatever they want. No problem. If that’s you, who am I to say anything bad about it?”
In the wake of such a hectic situation, what do you expect in the future from the brash and outspoken Irish knockout artist?
