For those who were wondering when Rashad Evans would return to the Octagon, your answer has come.
According to Brazil’s SporTV (h/t MMAFighting.com), the former light heavyweight champion has drawn Antonio Rogerio Nogueira next year on the Super Bowl weekend card. It will likely be UFC 157, though that has not been confirmed.
Here are some of the details that were reported:
While the UFC hasn’t officially announced the bout, a source close to the fight confirmed to MMAFighting.com on Wednesday that the bout is under serious consideration for a planned Feb. 2 event in Las Vegas.
It comes as no surprise that the fight will take place in Las Vegas, as that is the usual site for the Super Bowl card.
Evans has been staying busy behind the analyst’s desk but has not seen action since his April loss to former teammate Jon Jones. That fight was for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship, and he was thoroughly dominated.
As for Nogueira, he is coming off a stoppage victory against Tito Ortiz in December of last year. He was slated to fight Alexander Gustafsson in Sweden this year but was forced off the card due to injury.
A win would definitely put either man back into title contention. Currently, Chael Sonnen is set to get a title shot after coaching opposite of Jones on The Ultimate Fighter.
The next contender is not clear at this point. Dan Henderson, Lyoto Machida, Mauricio Rua and Gustafsson are all names being brought up, but whoever wins this fight could also be in the mix.
